We know Hal is relieved.

Geoff Johns!!

I haven't been keeping up with the news about this but having Geoff Johns on board will help.  I can't really think of who else I'd want on this project.  He's bound to bring good things to the table.

Here's the announcement.

Geoff Johns, the renowned writer behind popular DC Comics such as Green Lantern, Action Comics and Justice Society of America, has been brought on to write the saga of the DC Universe™ Online (DCUO) massively multiplayer action game from Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) in a first-ever collaboration with legendary comic artist Jim Lee, the company announced today.

"Having a writer of Geoff's caliber brings even more authenticity to the DC Universe Online, and should provide fans with an exciting new medium for his storytelling skills," said John Blakely, SOE-Austin's VP of Development. "Together with Jim Lee, who is our executive creative director for the game, we are tapping into the very best talent from the comic book industry."

DCUO offers a dramatic online setting where players can enter the DC Universe and battle alongside or against their favorite DC Comics heroes and villains including such icons as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and The Joker, as well as many other fan favorites such as Green Lantern, The Flash, Catwoman and Martian Manhunter. The action and drama will play out in such well-known locations as Gotham City and Metropolis among others.

So not only is Jim Lee involved but so is Geoff Johns.  Then again, I still remember the last time Jim Lee was involved in a DC game.  My fingers are crossed that this won't fail.

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season

My Current Favorite Comedy on TV

Here's the funny thing, I hadn't heard of this show until I was at Comic-Con in July.  I walked in towards the end of the show's panel to get a spot for the one following it.  I thought, "Oh, Johnny Galecki has a new show."  I wondered why they had a panel at Comic-Con since it was about two physicists.  They mentioned throwing in little nods to different topics of pop culture.  I thought maybe I should try to check it out when they mentioned the DVD was coming out in September.

CBS.com describes the show as follows:

Two brilliant scientists, a wacky, free-sprited woman, and a couple of geeky misfits make this smart and quirky comedy thoroughly entertaining.

When I saw the DVD, it was cheap (there's only 17 episodes in the first season) so I thought buying it would be a safe gamble.   I have to say, it's a great show.  It usually takes a lot to crack me up and this show has managed to in pretty much every episode.  I (obviously) love comics and I was a Mathematics major so catching all the comic references and science references is great.  I never thought I'd be watching a show for entertainment that mentioned things like integrals, summations or double blind experiments.

If you've seen the show or any clips, you already know how funny it is.  What I thought I'd do is list all the comic references to show how comic-friendly the show is and why you should watch it.

1. Pilot.  Sheldon (Jim Parsons) wears a Flash shirt.  The Battlestar Galatica DVD is mentioned.  Leonard (Johnny Galecki) seems to have Darth Vader shampoo and Luke Skywalker conditioner.

2. The Big Bran Hypothesis.  Sheldon wears a Superman shirt.  The four watch a Superman marathon which includes discussion on the physics of Superman saving Lois Lane when she falls out of the helicopter.  Green Lantern (and his power ring) are mentioned in being handy to move furniture.  Sheldon has a lightsaber replica.

3.  The Fuzzy Boots Corollary.  Either there weren't any references or I was too engrossed in the episode to note any.

4.  The Luminous Fish Effect.  We wee Sheldon's room has comics framed on his wall along with other comics.

5.  The Hamburger Postulate.  Superman's vulnerbilty to magic is mentioned.  The Hulk is also referenced.

6.  The Middle Earth Postulate.  This is the episode that features the four dressing up as the Flash for a Halloween Party.  Later Rajesh Koothrappali
(Kunal Nayyar) dresses up as Thor which leads to an Avengers reference.  Halle Berry's Catwoman costume is also mentioned.

7.  The Dumping Paradox.  Lots of Halo mention.  Sheldon wears a Green Lantern shirt.

8.  The Grasshopper Experiment.  Sheldon wears an Aquaman shirt.  A Justice League membership card is mentioned.  Comic-Con is referenced.  Later, Sheldon wears his Flash shirt.

9.  The Cooper-Hofstadter Polarization.  Kandor (the bottled city of Krypton) is mentioned.  Leonard has an original series Battlestar Galatica flight suit.  Sheldon wears a Batman & Robin shirt.  There is also a Greatest American Hero shirt.

10.  The Loobenfeld Decay.  Terminator and Star Wars are referenced.  Sheldon wears a Green Lantern shirt.

11.  The Pancake Batter Anomaly.  The comics Flash, Spectre and Tempest can be seen in Sheldon's room.  There is mention of the Bat-signal.

12.  The Jerusalem Duality.  Star Wars and the Force are mentioned.  Sheldon wears a Superman shirt.

13.  The Bat Jar Conjecture.  Star Trek references.  There is mention of Zod (and kneeling before him, of course).  Sheldon wears a Green Lantern shirt.  And there's the Batman cookie jar.

14.  The Nerdvana Annihilation.  Sheldon wears a Flash shirt.  A Batman figure can be seen along with  Supergirl, Superman, Wonder Woman and Dalek statues in the apartment.  Sheldon's "Spidey-Sense" goes off.

15.  The Pork Chop Indeterminacy.  Howard (Simon Helberg) wears a Flash belt buckle.  Leonard seems to have Superman boxers.  Sheldon wears a Captain Marvel (DC) shirt.

16.  The Peanut Reaction.  Sheldon wears a Justice League shirt.  A Dark Knight sculpture (statue) is mentioned (but not seen).

17.  The Tangerine Factor.  Sheldon wears a Riddler shirt (a question mark made out of bats).  Scooby-Doo is mentioned.

It's interesting to note that all of the comics and shirts Sheldon wears are from the DC Universe.  What's the reason?  It's a safe bet to say it's because the show is distributed by Warner Bros.

DVD?

So how is the DVD?  For me it was great.  I hadn't seen any of the episodes so I was in for a treat.  I could watch multiple episodes in one sitting.  Some of the episodes are online at CBS (see link above) but I like the convenience of being able to watch whichever episode I want on my HD TV.   I do think the show is good enough to watch the episodes more than once.  My next task is to get my wife to watch them.  We'll see if it's as funny for her.  She thought the pilot episode was good.  She wasn't knocked off her feet though.   As far as network comedies go, I give this show a 5 out of 5.  It cracks me up.  I enjoy the comic and pop culture references looked at with real physics.  As a former high school math teacher, I also can appreciate the math and science of the show.  I can't wait until the new episodes start up.  We have to wait and see what will happen between Leonard and Penny (Kaley Cuoco).  I also love the theme by the Barenaked Ladies.

As far as Special Features, there's only a short feature: Quantum Mechanics of the Big Bang Theory (A behind the scenes look into geek chic).  There are lots of clips from the episodes along with the creators discussing how the show came about.  They do have a physicist that helps them.  All of the calculations seen are real.  That's about it.  I give the special features a 2 out of 5.  Another advantage of the DVD is you can pause the end credits to read the 'vanity card' at the very end. These little messages vary from random thoughts to some humorous antecdotes.

If you really like the show and are into buying TV on DVDs, I suggest buying this.  As I mentioned, it has a low cost (think I paid less than twenty bucks for it).  It's a good show to pick and watch if nothing else is on.   It may not be for everyone.  But if you like comics, you'll probably love the show.

This post relates to: Joker, DC Universe, Mortal Kombat

There's been a lot of talk over this game.  I grew tired of the Mortal Kombat formula some time ago.  This bizarro concept has done what it intended.  I am now actually interested and even thinking about buying a Mortal Kombat game now.

The biggest complaint I've seen is that it's going to be watered down.

Another is that "heroes" don't perform "fatalities."  That is correct.  As cool as it would be, Superman will never tear someone's spine out of their body.  Instead, the heroes will have moves called "Brutalities."  They are described as a "very intense finishing move."

Jimmy Palmiotti also said that there will "one or two characters the fans are not going to see coming."  There's also a "big bad guy" that hasn't been revealed.  My gamer-geekiness is being re-born.

Check out the Joker's finishing move:

Classic.

Warner Bros. Movies Sets New Plan Into Motion

Warners is happy with the success of The Dark Knight, as they should be.  Although they're still feeling the sting over Marvel's recent successes in the comic based movies.  It seems rather than crank out movie after movie, they want to slow down and focus on actually putting out good movies.  What a strange concept.  I'm all for really great comic-based movies.  We don't need to see mediocre or just plain horrible adaptions just because the market is hot.  It's hard to revive a stinker when movie-goers have a bad taste in their mouth.

Looking for a job now
Surprisingly, it seems Warners is planning on re-booting Superman rather than continue from Superman Returns.  Okay, maybe it's not too surprising.  It was a really good movie but did have its faults.  Seems Superm/Batman is on hold also.

This is what the Wall Street Journal had to report:

Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov wants the studio to release as many as eight such movies a year by 2011.

A movie referred to internally as "Justice League of America," originally said to be for next summer, was planned as one of the studio's major releases. With that film, starring a superhero team, Warner hoped to spark interest in DC characters like Green Lantern who haven't yet attained the level of popularity of Batman. But script problems, among other things, have delayed the movie.

Warner Bros. also put on hold plans for another movie starring multiple superheroes -- known as "Batman vs. Superman" -- after the $215 million "Superman Returns," which had disappointing box-office returns, didn't please executives. "'Superman' didn't quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to," says Mr. Robinov. "It didn't position the character the way he needed to be positioned." "Had 'Superman' worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009," he adds. "But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all."

The studio is set to announce its plans for future DC movies in the next month. For now, though, it is focused on releasing four comic-book films in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman, and two movies focusing on other DC Comics characters. Movies featuring Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman are all in active development.
