The Multiverse is a pivotal concept in DC Comics. Over the years, it has gone through many changes, and has nearly been destroyed on a few occasions, but always ends up intact.
The universe they have now is primarily made up of the characters who were considered "Ultimate" in the 50s. You could think of Barry Allen as the Ultimate Jay Garrick. Hal Jordan is the Ultimate Alan Scott.

All Star is not really an equivalent because it's still loaded in past continuity, even if it doesn't really affect it, it's much more enjoyable if you know what's been going on in the past.
The ultimate marvel line actually managed to stand on its own which was pretty impressive, I thought.
