Looking to get started with reading DC Comics as the characters are much more appealing to me than that of Marvel's, and the New 52 reboot seems the most appropriate time to do so since there isn't a massive backlog of storyline or references dating back hundreds of issues, I have just finished reading the first issue of Scott Snyder's Batman. However, as variety is undoubtedly the spice of life, I'd rather not limit myself to just one single comic series. Are there any particular great series from the New 52 that I simply just have to read? Flash, Green Arrow, Detective Comics?
DC Comics
Originally known as "National Publications", DC is a publisher of comic books featuring iconic characters and teams such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Justice League of America, and the Teen Titans, and is considered the originator of the American superhero genre. DC, along with rival Marvel Comics, is one of the "big two" American comic book publishers. DC Entertainment is a subsidiary of Warner Brothers and its parent company Warner Media.
Which New 52 comic series are best?
This would be my Top 10 right now:
- Animal Man
- Green Arrow
- Wonder Woman
- Detective Comics
- Demon Knights
- Swamp Thing (Snyder's run, Soule has been OK so far but I don't have enough material to judge ATM)
- Green Lantern
- Justice League Dark
- Aquaman
- Batman Incorporated/Batman and Robin (goes back and forth for me)
Action Comics used to be there but Morrison is done, Diggle was barely in the title and the current solicits aren't very promising (cough Lobdell cough) so I'm probably dropping it after this arc is over.
As of right now, I'd say these are the top five books:
- Aquaman by Geoff Johns
- Batman by Scott Snyder
- Flash by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccelato
- Green Arrow by Jeff Lemire
- Wonder Woman by Brian Azzarello
My personal favorites in order:
- Nightwing
- Batman
- Justice League
- JLA
- Detective Comics
- Red Hood and the Outlaws
- Batman Inc.
- Batman and Robin.
- Batman.
- Animal Man.
- Green Arrow (Lemire).
- Aquaman.
- Justice League.
- Justice League of America.
- Wonder Woman.
- Green Lantern.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I just read the first two issues of The Flash (Issue #0 and Issue #1) and really like it, perhaps even more so than Batman. The artistic style is simply phenomenal, as I love the colour palette, and The Flash is really appealing to me as a hero.
- All-Star Western
- Animal Man
- Aquaman
- Batman and Robin
- Batwoman
- Detective Comics (Starting with issue 13)
- Earth 2
- Green Arrow (Starting with issue 17)
- Green Lantern
- Justice League Dark
- Red Hood and the Outlaws
- Swamp Thing
- Talon
- Wonder Woman
Justice League, Justice League of America, and Batman are decent with flashes of greatness here and there, but are the best to follow if you want to know what direction the DCU is headed.
Batwoman has probably the best art of the New 52, and the story is pretty good too. It's a strong contender for best overall series in the relaunch. If you like art like this, you'll like Batwoman.
My only problem with Batwoman was the insane number of issues it took to get through the first arc.
I can only :( recommend:
- Justice League Dark
- Green Lantern
- Aquaman
@queso6p4: I see what you're saying, but Batwoman still has regular 5-6 issue arcs like the other books. What makes Batwoman's plot feel sluggish at times is that each arc grows directly out of the one before it, so the first three arcs merge into a sort of super-arc covering the first 17 issues, and characters go out and get cycled back in.
Im loving Aquaman, Flash, JL and animal man.
But if your starting from issue 1 then try JL international. Unfortunately they cancelled it but its still great.
My favorites are
Batman
Batman and Robin
Justice League
Flash
Green Arrow(start at 17)
Wonder Woman
Justice League of America(read first 12 issues of JL first for full appreciation)
Batman Incorporated(very continuity dependent with alot of knowledge about past events to be FULLY appreciated. I recommend checking out Grant Morrisons run starting with Batman:The Black Glove Deluxe Edition)
Aquaman
Red Hood and the Outlaws
Animal Man
Swamp Thing
I Vampire(unfortunately was just canceled but is still an awesome read)
there are plenty of other great books and runs from the new 52 but IMO these are the cream of the crop
Batwoman is unlike anything else you might pick up from DC, pretty much guaranteed.
Red Hood & The Outlaws is really fun. I got hooked from the first arc, but some people hated it and only liked it because of the second arc. I suppose if you really want a fresh start you could just begin with the most recent issue, as the book just got a new writer and kicked off a whole new direction.
It's definitely not the best but (Justice League of America's) Vibe has been a pretty fun read if you're looking to get started on DC with something simple. And it's only three issues in so catching up is pretty easy.
As for best series, my vote goes to Batwoman in terms of consistantly amazing. Aquaman has also been consistently good. And Batman is good but has had a few slow issues.
@chisoxrox: Ah, they did all kinda run run together for me.
1. Batman
2. Justice League
3.Batman Inc
4.Animal-Man
5.Wonder Woman
6. Aquaman
7.DeathStroke
8. Batman and Robin
9.Action Comics
10. Justice League Dark
1. Earth 2
2. Green Lantern (so far, don't know what's coming with #21 and the new team)
3. Justice League
4. Justice League of America
Besides I hear that Animal Man, Swamp Thing and Demon Knights are good books, but I don't read them.
Aquaman has been ok so far, but now with Pelletier as penciller it lost some attraction to me. Green Lantern Corps is ok too, same for Batman ... though I don't read it monthly.
1. Aquaman
2. The Flash
3. Batman
4. Talon
5. Green Lantern
6. Justice League of America
7. Justice League
8. Batman and Robin
9. Animal Man
10. Earth 2
This list is subject to change
It's been underrated so far in the new 52 IMO, but the Deathstroke comics have been phenomenal.
I've heard this and wanted to check it out because Justin Jordan was apparently killing it on Deathstroke but I haven't bothered because I heard they were cancelling the title :( I'm assuming this is still true?
@extremis: Unfortunately, yes. However, there are already 20 or so really good Deathstroke comics already out there, all phenomenal reads.
I wouldn't worry about DC cancelling the title, he will make some great appearances in the other new 52 titles. As it should end with a bang. It seems like Slade is set up to fight Mr. freaking Majestic in his final issues.
Out of the series I am currently reading, I'd strongly recommend Green Lantern, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Threshold, Earth 2, Aquaman, Flash, Justice League, Justice League Dark, Justice League of America, Green Arrow, and Justice League of America's Vibe. I also have full confidence in Jim Starlin, who took over Stormwatch last issue to make that series great. As for meh titles, there's Green Lantern Corps, Batman Incorporated, Red Hood and the Outlaws, The Savage Hawkman, Demon Knights, Red Lanterns, Team 7, and Justice League International. I'd say steer clear of both Katana and the Phantom Stranger. You might hear people complain about how JLI, Red Lanterns, or Team 7 are bad, and it's quite true, but Katana and the Phantom Stranger are infinitely worse. Also GLC and GL:NG were both awful for like two issues right after the Wrath of the First Lantern started, but have picked back up.
Batwoman has probably the best art of the New 52, and the story is pretty good too. It's a strong contender for best overall series in the relaunch. If you like art like this, you'll like Batwoman.
Probably? she DEFINITELY has the best art in DC, and she probably has the best art in all of comics. Her covers are amazing.
Batman has probably been the best. if you are newer to dc Justice league was entertaining up to issue 16 same with Aquaman, Green Lantern has been great imo but if you are a GL historian you might think it is crap. I couldn't get into Green Arrow story was awful and the art didn't pull me in.
- Hmm

-3. The Flash
-4. GL Corps
-5. Superman
-6. Suicide Squad
- 7. Nightwing
-8. Batgirl
-9. Birds of Prey
- 10. JLA
- for issues 1-18
- 1. RHATO
- 2. B&R
- 3. GL
- 4. GL NG
- 5. The Flash
- 6. GL Corps
- 7. Superman (Not a fan of the H'ell on earth crossover)
- 8. Suicide Squad
- 9. Nightwing
- 10. Batgirl.
