What's with DC and the number 52?

So I'm sure others have noticed, but what is DC's obsession with the number 52? First (from my memory) they run a storyline that caps the number of universes to 52,than they have a series called 52,and obviously they did the New 52 and capped their number if titles to 52. There's probably other 52's somewhere in there that I'm not aware of aswell I'd wager. Anyone know or got an idea as to why they like this number so much?

I can't remember exactly who said it, but I remember listening to Fatman on Batman and either DiDio or Lee said that it was a lucky number after the success they had with the series 52. It originally came from that series, which was probably named after how many weeks are in a year, since it was a weekly series.

Something about this story makes Didio and Lee sound kind of crazy.

After Infinite Crisis the DCU jumped ahead 1 year. To fill in that year, DC released a weekly series called 52. That series is acclaimed by most everyone. So I guess DC was trying to cash in on the good graces of people by trying to linguistically tie the reboot with the 52 series.

Ok - so far the only idea is superstitions.... which while it sounds like it might be correct... I personally find disturbing. Should a company be run on something like that?

I think it is based off of the weekly series '52' which ran for a whole year. Since that was popular they ran with the title and made it the New 52.

The number 52 has just been their thing ever since Infinite Crisis.

They had the weekly series "52" after IC to fill in the missing year

They had the weekly series "Countdown to Final Crisis" which was 52 issues

They did "Trinity", a weekly series, which was 52 issues

Post-IC they had 52 Universes rather than an infinite amount (despite saying they did originally)

52 has just been a successful number for DC so it seems fitting that in the DCnU they stick to the 52 motif.

I believe it started with 52. The series ran 52 numbers because that's the number of weeks in a year. After that they just wanted to keep the motif, which is a very important thing in a franchise, and not for superstition, but because it creates a sense of uniqueness, cohesion and makes the reader feel like he's in on something with the writers.

The weekly series 52was incredibly ambitious, dramatically successful, and beloved by fans of lesser-known characters like Booster Gold, Renee Montoya, Black Adam, Ralph Dibny, and Batwoman. It ended with the creation of 52 different universes, explaining the title in an in-universe context. It enjoyed a level of success that the next weekly comic, Countdown to Infinite Crisis, couldn't even dream of and that Trinity only grasped at occasionally. From that point on, it became a thing.

52 is a modern classic as far as I'm concerned and if you haven't read it I strongly recommend. If it was a thing before that book, it'd be news to me.

Yeah I remember this. Lee just suggested in and Didio was like, okay, cool - lucky number.

@veshark: I second this. He said on Fatman on Batman that is was for no real particular reason.
