    What's the best way to start off the first full week into a new month? By taking a peek at comic marketshares and sales figures for the previous month, of course! Diamond, the industry's American comic distributor released figures for the month of January, 2012 and -- surprise, surprise -- DC Comics leads the industry in sales, once again, stealing the first ten spots for highest selling comics for the first month of the year.

    No Caption Provided

    The top five comic books sold for the month of January, 2012 were not only DC books, but each sold over one hundred thousand copies. If that doesn't seem like a lot to you, then you may want to consider what the highest selling comic books were before the launch of the new 52. Very rarely would the fifth highest selling title for a given month sell over one hundred thousand copies.

    JUSTICE LEAGUE #5 beat out every other book last month selling 148,124 units and BATMAN #5 was not far behind with 139,492 units sold. The eleventh spot was held by Marvel's UNCANNY X-MEN #5 with 67,855 units sold. While a full list of books can be seen below, the numbers still do not reflect the number of digital sales for last month, or at all. Unfortunately, digital sales numbers are still being kept under wraps, and with DC's same day and date digital program still in effect we have to assume that the digital sales numbers are still adequate.

    == TEASER ==

    DC's VP of Sales, Marketing and Business Development John Rood revealed the ranking for publisher's top ten digital titles for the month of January, 2012 but did not list the number of copies per title downloaded, making this information relatively difficult to gauge. Rood did, however, give some insight on the correlation between the print and digital sales of the same book.

    The only titles that do, interestingly, stronger as a percentage of physical sales in digital are publishing franchises with high awareness like "Action" and "Detective" or character franchises with high awareness like Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman. And they are still relatively insignificant in total compared to print sales. But if you see any variance off of a straight average, it would be because of the built in interest that those franchises have with all readers – both physical and digital.

    While DC may be up in unit sales, Marvel still trumps DC in dollars essentially making more money than the former. What do you think of the sales figures? What comics do you think should be doing better?

    DC still going strong it seems. Well, I suppose that was to be expected. I'm just curious if these numbers are gonna hold with all the creative teams soon to be changed with the conclusion of some of the first story arcs. Maybe, maybe not.

    From what I gather, I would not worry too much about Captain Atom. I expect that to fare better in the future given where they are trying to put him on the power scale since the reboot!

    @Chaos Burn said:

    No, they shouldn't. But they should use the reboot to its fullest potential and focus on keeping quality up and they'll continue to do well.

    Uh.......6 titles were always going to be cancelled and replaced with 6 new ones, that was announced long before.

    Marvel's cancelled about ---what--- 6 or 7 titles in the past few months?

    That list is messed up, I can name at least 20 books that are a hundred times better than the top selling books, people need to get there heads out there asses and stop buying generic crap just because it's Marvel or DC, spread it out a little people before we lose some of these publisher that actually put out good storys.

    @spiderbat87: well im assumming people do read the smaller titles from image, dynamite, dark horse etc. but with all the success from the movies and cartoons and mainstream to put it simple, newer readers of the past 5-10 years have been interested in their titles. plus with the realaunch people from the smaller titles get a chance to get in on the fun. and thats with the big sales. i myself am a reader of smaller indie titles and im enjoying alotta the mainstream titles myself as well as many of my family and friends :) independent titles are aware im sure

    But stuff like OMAC is/was selling more than Invincible, pepole should be ashamed by that. The only thing I'm quite happy about is Lord of the Jungle being in the top 50 but I bet that had more to do with the book only being $1.

    im not really suprised aquaman is up there, everyone knew it was gonna be a big hit before plus i knew it would especially after geoff johns/ivan reis work on brightest day arc. the one im suprised is batman: dark knight. why are people still reading that tile. i havnt met a person yet who has liked that book? lol i know i didnt. and im also suprised animal man or new guardians isnt higher up there! those titles both art and story wise have been alotta fun in the past 5 issues. and if a bat title has any place up there id pick penguin over dark knight penguins story is just fantastic!! id advise everyone to read that title but either way congrats DC! :)

    It's not just about the independence though, people just by Marvel/DC because of name recognition and then continue to by them just because they always have, regardless of the quality of the titles, theres plenty of books that are vastly superior to 90% of what marvel/dc put out yet they get cancelled because nobody bothers to try them out.

    People need to realize Comic stores order alot of the top 10-20 you see today based on character recognition. Superman, Jla, Detective aren't even top notch writing. It's average writing. It's all based on recognition. I see books that deserve those top 20 spots and I see some books that don't warrant top 20 Once AvX comes out, alot of these books will be pushed down the top sales for this event. Great writing will always take a backseat to recognition characters.

    April and May will be interesting to see. I think Marvel will gain some numbers back with AvX but the 2nd wave of new 52 will be interesting to see also on DCs side.

    Yeah I'm really surprised by that too and Red Hood and The Outlaws being a couple spots below that.

    Somewhat surprised the top ten series are all DC titles. Even more surprised Superman is selling as much as it is. I'd love to see Aquaman move up higher on the list.

Great writing will take a backseat to recognition characters.

    ^^^ this, people

    we have a winner

    Shame Captain Atom's sales are so low. It is a book that I enjoy. Hopefully it wont get axed if there is a 3rd wave of New 52.

    Voodoo not doing too hot, shame...I am actually enjoying that book. I read a majority of the 52 (stopped reading a couple, cause I was bored with them...OMAC, Men of War, Blackhawks), and while I like most of them, i haven't been in that "I MUST READ" mind frame with any but like...5 or so.

    Off the top of my head: Aquaman, Justice League, Voodoo, Grifter, The Flash, Animal Man...and maybe one or two more that I can't recall.

    I'm really not suprised that DC has the top 10 slot! Marvel has been going downhill more and more in the last couple of years.
