DC Comics
Originally known as "National Publications", DC is a publisher of comic books featuring iconic characters and teams such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Justice League of America, and the Teen Titans, and is considered the originator of the American superhero genre. DC, along with rival Marvel Comics, is one of the "big two" American comic book publishers. DC Entertainment is a subsidiary of Warner Brothers and its parent company Warner Media.

I happened to run into him at Isotope Comics when he was picking up his weekly books and I saw he was holding a very nice looking hardcover. He removed the book from its slipcase and showed me contents inside. I knew right away that I would have to buy this book for myself.
I have been reading comics for over twenty years but DC has been putting them out for over seventy. This collection breaks down their publishing history year by year. There are loads of images and information that isn't easily accessible. The nice thing about the year by year layout is you can easily visit any year to see what the major happenings were. If you're curious what happened the year you were born or the year you first started reading, it's all right there. Besides the yearly information, there is more in this collection.

Besides a gorgeous hardcover and slipcase, you also get two prints by cover artist Ryan Sook. With over three hundred fifty pages, you can get all the DC history information you would want. Normally I don't get excited by indexes in the back but the one here clearly lists pages for the different characters as well as possible titles involving them. For example, if you wanted information on B'Wana Beast's first appearance, G.I. Joe comics in 1964, the first mention of Zur-En-Arrh or Spider-Man's appearances in the DC universe, you can find them all easily.
For trivia buffs, it's not just DC information presented here. We know that there was actually other events occurring in the world and at the bottom of the pages, we also get information on other major events that happened that year.
The mix of detailed information along with oversized, full-color images will make any DC Comics fan happy. People don't often think about just how much history DC has and this is a great way to showcase it. It's a great book that you can either sit and read cover to cover or jump around to different years to get a feel for everything that DC has contributed to the comic industry.
Now I need to decide whether or not to purchase the giant (and pricey) DC 75th Anniversary Book.
cool boooook. so how much is it and where can i get it if they sell out fast. like next year. too bad they dont have a collector item made of gold like a coin or something like that.
I had my doubts about this but after reading your post I would definitely enjoy reading/owning the book.
" wait so this is different from that giant book Paul Levitz is holding? then what's that one?! "Paul's is focused on the art... so it's a historical walkthrough using mostly pictures and fewer words... more like an art gallery.
This book revolves more around trivia, historical blurbs, and the like (you can see the layout in the photos).
Great review of the book, and thanks for featuring it! I'm one of the writers of DC Comics Year by Year. I handled the sections on the Golden Age, so the 1930s and 1940s. The whole package is impressive, including the removable prints and the Ryan Sook slipcover case. If anybody's interested in more info I posted some of my thoughts on writing the Golden Age on my blog here: http://geekosity.blogspot.com/2010/10/top-10-oddities-from-golden-age-of-dc.html
