Hey guys,
I recently just started getting really into comic books. It took me AGES to even slightly get the hang of how the DC Universe works and, a lot of research later, I think I have made some sense of it by now, although I am waaaaaay behind on the infinite different storylines and changes in the past year.
Since it's really way too much to take in all at once, I decided to focus on the New 52, which is fairly new to this (meaning hopefully less catching up to do?). Of course feel free to give your recommendations on any "Oldie but goldie" comics (I've looked into The Killing Joke, All-Star Superman, The Dark Knight Returns and a few others)
So this is where I need your help. I'm a bit lost WITHIN the New 52 world. I decided to start reading Batman, Justice League and Aquaman. I'm also considering Action Comics, Animal Man, Swamp Thing and Wonder Woman.
The problem is: I feel like there is very little given in terms of character depth and back-story development. The thing that drives me to most towards superheroes is knowing their background personal stories, where they come from - much more than the fights and explosions. To give you an idea, the story I've enjoyed the most so far was the SHAZAM story in the last pages of the Justice League issues, since it was introducing an overall new character so they had to start really from the beginning. I also really loved All-Star Superman for giving way for much more personal developments (him telling Lois and ensuing developments) than if it was just centered around Superman vs. Lex Luthor.
Overall I guess I'm a bit disappointed that so far the stories seem to kind of be giving little focus to personal stories vs. big action scenes. Did you feel the same way starting New 52? Could it be because I haven't read too many issues yet? Given this, where do you recommend I go from here? I really want to know more about these heroes!
Thanks guys!
