As you can see, in Justice League #23.1: Darkseid, his origin has been changed, he was no longer Prince Uxas from the Apokoliptan royal family, a legit pantheon of new gods:

    he was a mud grubber,
    he was a mud grubber,
    a mortal!
    a mortal!

and he tricked the Old Gods to wage war on each other, then when they were exhausted from the fighting he killed them all, and their powers transferred to him:

    No Caption Provided

As you can see, Darkseid is an usurper in the New 52 as well, but in my opinion he can no longer call himself or be called legitimately a god, 'cause you have to be born a god in order to be a god, you don't become a god by getting powers, otherwise Supes would have to be called a god too... What do you think people, and I'm interested in the opinions of people who know the definition of godhood in the DC universe mostly? Is Darkseid a god or just a godlike being in the New 52?

In DC being a god is more about how you, as the wielder of enormous forces, act than it depends on how you got the powers in the first place. Ellaine Belloc was a half-breed and she's ended up being the Almighty. Daniel Hall was conceived in the Dreaming by Hippolyta Hall and ended up becoming the next Dream of the Endless. Olympus is overrun with Zeus' half-bred children and Wonder Woman recently became the God of War by killing Ares.

As for Darkseid former legitimacy to godhood... I'd say no, nothing has really changed in that regard. The New Gods were a vast race of beings that called themselves that, no one from Earth appeared to consider them any more divine that they would a Dominator or Tamaranian. Plus Darkseid wasn't born with his powers back then either, he had to acquire them through visiting some mega-scary place where the Omega Force was at home.

So... basically you're saying that Supes could be a god if he so chooses?

@rankorr25: Batman has made the observation that the only one who may not see Superman as a god-like being is Superman. Wally West also makes that observation when (Electric Blue) Superman starts wrestling with Asmodel (a King Angel). And a few times we've seen that cults spring up that worship him as such.

This is an arbitrary rule about a fictional being. If sparkly day-time vampires can be a box office hit, then a "new god" can be defined however DC wants.

Darkseid is a God because of the source of his powers. Gods in the DC are powered by belief as proven by the issue we are speaking of, other beings might have comparable strength like the Spectre or Superman but they are not powered by belief. Darkseid killed a being who was powered by belief and stole his power essentially powering himself by belief. So yes he turned himself into a God as did High Father after the last God transferred his powers to him.

Is being born a god the only way to be a god?

Historically, DC has depicted characters who were not born gods becoming gods-- both Diana and Donna Troy have been turned into gods by their gods at various points in time. WW has just recently gained status as a god again.

Godhood, in various mediums, has been established by the vast amount of power an individual has at a given time, sometimes self styled godhood is claimed.

In DC, Darkseid is part of the New Gods.

I'd just like to say that I kinda had a problem with how this issue still painted DS as the bad guy, when it was crystal clear that the Old gods were a bunch of complete d!cks.

I would say that he is more legitimately a god in new 52 than before: because he took power from the old gods, rather than being a member of a race who call themselves gods

The only things needed to become a god is power and someone to worship you.

I agree with @papinacho about the source of the powers being important. New 52 Darkseid and Highfather inherited their powers from the old gods, while Superman is powered scientifically by the difference in climate between Krypton and Earth.

He is still a god. He stole his powers from the old gods, and recently called himself a god when fighting batman
