I'll be blunt (unlike DC, for no apparent reason) are apollo and the midnighter supposed to be homosexual? if so, whats the big deal? why cater to nazi's? which they have done in the past, th entire fourth reich thing was just a round about way to pay homage to them, they never suffered a horribly bad defeat or were disrespected in a way that would truly discourage the white supremacist movement

#2 Posted by nonfiction91 (1713 posts) - 1 year, 4 months ago - Show Bio

I still stand by this statement

@nonfiction91: I think the issue is that nobody understands what your statement was.

I agree with everyone else. Huh?

#8 Edited by Dernman (11347 posts) - 1 year, 4 months ago - Show Bio

They are gay and always have been gay. There was never a hint that they weren't nor has there been a problem over it.
I don't know what you're going on about.

There's a DC Comics Fourth Reich team but I have no idea what that has to do with Apollo/Midnighter.

Time to break out the babelfish. First step, English to German.

Now German to French.

And finally, French to English. I hope this works.
I' ; L (different D.C. current, because not of obvious reason) are more midnighter blunted l' Apollo and what has to be homosexual are? if is that the large thing? why nazi' ; offer; S? qu' they made in the past, the fourth thing of kingdom total of Th has rights approximately a manner of paying them of Ehrerbietung, they never suffered a terribly bad defeat or were treated disrespectfully on a kind which would discourage really lawyers of the prevalence of the white movement of race

Almost there...

OH GOD, IT'S EVEN HARDER TO UNDERSTAND THAN BEFORE D:

XD

I was angry over a previous argument when I wrote the second half, but I did have a point it just..veered. They have these gay characters in dc that they imply but don't really make it a fact openly. Honestly I didn't know about either of them until I started picking up new 52 stormwatch.

@nonfiction91: In the Wildstorm universe, pre-FP, they were openly gay, married, and it was explicit. No problems were there. However, I think I know what you're trying to say. Since DC merged WS and Vertigo back with DC and created one universe, Apollo and Midnighter may have a more implicit relationship rather than an explicit one since DC comics are generally kid - teen rated comics and not for adults. Am i correct in assuming this is what you meant?

#14 Posted by nonfiction91 (1713 posts) - 1 year, 4 months ago - Show Bio

Yes, exactly. I'm saying I understand the age demographic their trying to appeal to, but still, I'm not gay, but I don't have any problem with it and I'm not so mcuh older that I can't remember what being a kid was like. I had a kid in my class, he was a good guy, but he was clearly gay, we were young about 5th grade and this kid always getting harrassed, I think if they make the fact of it seem less taboo kids will be better for it in the future.

#15 Posted by ArturoCalaKayVee (3641 posts) - 1 year, 4 months ago - Show Bio

@nonfiction91: I think it's more about kid's reading gay related stories that make the publishing a little iffy. Sure, a lot of people who read comics are completely fine and comfortable reading about relationships such as Apollo and Midnighter, but then theres that group of kids whose mom's will sue the company for publishing homosexual content for their kids to read. Bull shit, I know, but a prime example is Obsidian, Alan Scott's son, who was openly gay but they NEVER showed anything about Obsidian's relationship? Why? I believe it was because DC published it and not WS or Vertigo. I don't think DC is going to raise their age ratings just to appeal to the gay community because they want all ages to be able to read their books so they can make money. I could be wrong, I hope I'm wrong (and I hope i didn't offend anyone), but that's what it looks like to me.

No, I agree I think your right, it just sucks when you hear it aloud. Yeah DC has been doing it since..as long as their first homosexual character, That's MY point I don't get how they are so many years in, and theirs still that big of a deal about an inevitable minority thats always going to be there, I bet if the world got wiped clean and evolution started all over, eventually there would still be gay Half centuars people walking around. I don't know I just like the outside the box way of viewing the mechanics of a type of person I don't normally relate to, that's just a group of people I'd like to see develop in a way accustomed to that group specifically.

and I suppose if you boil it down, the kids within their target demo are usually highly insecure around that age, and would probably drop the book for fear of being seen as homosexual

They are still openly gay characters. They are just starting from a earlier point in their relationship.
Like with Superman and Lois.
Barry Allen and Iris West.
It has nothing to do with the being gay.
The only difference between these three couples is Appollo and Midnighter have already shown signs of getting together.

@Dernman: I dunno, its just stupid how everything is implied, maybe they'll be more blunt in the future, also nice avatar, martian rocks

#19 Edited by jsphsmth (1126 posts) - 1 year, 4 months ago - Show Bio

@nonfiction91: Their homosexuality isn't implied any more than it is implied that Martian Manhunter is heterosexual. Do you start a conversation with people by declaring your sexuality? Should Paul Cornel have started the first issue by declaring their sexuality? No, he was writing the characters as if they have only first met. He has stated in multiple interviews that he would be developing their relationship as the series progressed.

Unfortunately he is off the comic.

Precisely. When a flamboyant gay character is introduced he's scorned because he fits the mold (Bunker), whereas two seemingly masculine characters are expected to replay every scenario in the minds of the readers, the industry is blatantly advocating the silence of homosexuality, AKA forbidden knowledge. It's easy to slightly overlook set standards of sexuality while completely overlooking the human interaction. Apollo and Midnighter may not even be lovers in the long run since it's a fresh start for every character. They're essentially new characters at this point.
Since it is a fresh start, one of them may even be bisexual.

No the writers clearly stated they were gay when asked like a hundred times. You can even tell they were getting annoyed having to answer the same question over and over. They even stated at one point they didn't understand why people would think Appolo and Midnighter weren't homosexual.

@Dernman: Watch, Midnighter will get tired of Apollo and find the next best thing: Superman. It will put a whole new spin on Action Comics.

@sesquipedalophobe: lol Wait, "next best thing"?!!! How dare you?!!! You mean trade up :p

@Dernman: Yes, in turn he'll hook up with Wonder Woman. There aren't too many bisexual characters in comics I actually like, so Midnighter being one would be a delight. I made business pick-up line cards based on him, which never worked.
