I do not understand DC continuity

I was a big Marvel comics fan as a kid and I stopped reading comics in my teens. Thanks to the Batman movies and games, I wanted to start reading again. However, to me, it seems like there is no continuity in the DC universe which makes it hard for me to follow. The writers just delete the history of its characters or retcon an event whenever they feel like it. How do fans of DC feel about this?

@JoeEddie: Yes, the entire DCU rebooted in September. Creators were given the option of keeping, altering or disregarding previous continuity.

To be fair, all publishers do it. Marvel just altered the Punisher. He was for decades written as a Vietnam vet, now he is a Gulf War vet.

Edit: I do realize that I just compared a mountain to a mole hill, but the point is that comics are serialized fiction and that continuity needs to be tweaked periodically.

I picked up Batman:Hush last week. With the entire DCU reboot, does this mean that the story is no longer canon?

@JoeEddie: Did you read it yet? I don't want to spoil anything.

Yeah, I did. I actually picked it up because I saw Hush in Arkham City

Pretty sure its still in continuity but I dont know.

@JoeEddie: Bruce and Selina's relationship was redefined in Hush. The relationship did not survive the reboot, it never happened.

Hush has not yet shown up as a villain, but most DCU villains haven't shown up yet. He was too good a villain for Batman not to reappear.

I go with the approach that anything that they say hasn't happened, still has happened.

I am going to pick up Heart of Hush, The Long Halloween, and Knightfall next. As a kid, I read the Knightfall hardback and I had a few issues of the comic.( The issue where Riddle was on venom and when Bane broke Batman's back)

@RazzaTazz: Yes, but in this case Batman and Catwoman no longer know each other's secret identies. It is a definte change in continuity.

Sounds like he is going to ignore the new changes

@JoeEddie: Most of the Batman stuff is still canon thankfully. PS Hush is a great book. Also get Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. Also The Black Mirror but you need to know some things for that.

You picked some great stories. It really doesn't matter if they are in continuity. You will enjoy them.

DC is currently collecting No Man's Land in a new series of trades it was another great epic storyline. You should enjoy that as well.

- No one does, that's why they had all the Crisis events, that all failed to fix what was by then a hopelessly convoluted mess

I will have to check that out. Thanks for the recommendations.

So, why does DC have problems with their continuity while other publishers do not?

In Hush, there is a flashback of Batman being shot in the back by Two-Face. Any idea when this happened?

I don't recall the specific event, but I have 30+ years of Batman stories floating around in my head.

I suspect that it doesn't actually link to a specific event, but was written entirely for this story arc.

I could be wrong. If I am, I am sure that somebody will correct me and you will get an answer.

Confused by DC continuity? Read up on Hawkman from Golden Age, through Silver Age to Modern Age.....now that's confusing. Or Donna Troy who may not exist anymore.
