DC Villains That Need a Revamp

#1 Posted by BatWatch (2291 posts) - 1 year, 14 days ago - Show Bio

Who is getting stale? Who needs something more? As long as they are going to shove the DCNU down our throats, who do think could benefit from it?

Here is the format: Villain/Problem with the Character/What Direction You Would Like Him/Her to Take?

I'll start.

Black Mask (Roman)

Problem: Generic and boring. He's got a cool look, but his actions are typical mob boss...and sometimes he is portrayed as a bit of a boob.

Direction: Anything to make him more relatable and/or more threatening. Many of the best villains have something going for them. Mr. Freeze loves his wife, Penguin runs some legitimate businesses, heck, even Joker can make you laugh, but Black Mask is just generically evil. Mwa, Ha, Ha! Power, money and pain! Booooring. Also, I don't see him as a genuine threat to Batman or much anybody else.

I agree. I believe that a black mask reboot could work wonders for the character. The best thing I could think of is they make the mask special in some way besides just being glued to his face. DC is getting heavily involved in magic within the New 52 especially with the FCBD Black room where Pandora was. Anyway, Black mask’s mask should be magical or cursed in some way. If it were cursed and made him either possessed or believe he was possessed, not only would it give a better reason for him being in Arkham Asylum, (since he shouldn’t be there normally since he isn’t insane) but also give readers a reason to feel bad for him. Like readers do for Mr. Freeze and the Penguin making Black Mask a stronger character.

Anyway, my pick for a reboot would have to be Kid Devil:

I feel he could fit so perfectly within the NOWHERE crossover story in many different ways. He could be a fire-breathing meta-human who NOWHERE captured and mutated into looking the way he looks now. I feel like he would fit perfectly into the Ravangers as a kid trying to do good even though everyone assumes he is evil because of the way he looks and is constantly pressured into just giving in a becoming evil...or, he could be on that team with Rose Wilson who are hunting the Ravangers and be an agent of NOWHERE who's job is to hunt and kill loose ends and after his mutation lost most his humanity. What do you guys think?

Copperhead,Villains like these should be more threatening rather then become background characters.

Copperhead could be mutated into a more reptilian looking humanoid like the lizard.

Think about it.

I am glad with what they're doing with Silver Banshee so far only in the sense that Supergirl FINALLY seems to have a supporting character. If the writers continue on the path they're on with her, Supergirl could have one of the best comics in the relaunch. Also, it will serve the readers greatly when they finally do decide to make Banshee bad and do it in a good fashion.

@CrimsonCake: They actually did that once during the Underworld Unleashed crossover.

I don't consider it an unmitigated disaster only because Copperhead was so lame to begin with.

@Icarusflies: god I loved Underworld Unleashed, I so miss the old school DC 80's/90's crossovers, especially the annual events.

I would have liked Underworld Unleashed more without the whole 'All the Rogues Die' thing. :P

But yeah, the old crossovers were more fun.

@Icarusflies: Today's crossovers wish they could be as good as the old stuff, I'd take Bloodlines over Final Crisis any day...

I agree with Black Mask.

I would say Zsaz, he needs a story where he's not so easily taken out.

The majority of Superman's rogues. They need a reboot to become more threatening and offer more action in a comic that seems to be getting drained of it.

He is definitely not my favourite character and he can be boring at times but:

1. The fact that he is a serious mob boss (especially in War Games) actually makes him more interesting. He has the best of both worlds: He is both "a mask" and a mob boss and unlike most Bat villains, he is not completely insane, has results and actually won at times.

2. Not threatening? He has a skull for a head and enjoys torture more than 90% of villains (cf War Games and Catwoman).

Now Judd Winick kind of messed it all up in Under the Hood but that's Winick for you, sometimes he just mess things up.

your "revamped" black mask basically just described Red Skull... c'mon bro. :P

#15 Posted by BatWatch (2291 posts) - 1 year, 8 days ago - Show Bio

@nickthedevil: You relate more with the Red Skull?

I disagree. Making Roman more human would be a step away from the Red Skull. Also, Red Skull is practically the iconic "Mwa, Ha, Ha! I am evil! World domination!' That's what I would like Roman to move away from.

In other words, Black Mask is already Red Skull only less effective.

#16 Posted by BatWatch (2291 posts) - 1 year, 8 days ago - Show Bio

@DarthShap: Black Mask was good in War Games, but in every other view of his character, I've not been impressed.

Yes, he looks threatening, and again, his unifying of the gangs during War Games was a stroke of genius, but he only "beat" Batman after he was completely exhausted. Batman later mopped the effing floor with Black Mask in a fight, and Roman did not accomplish much once he was the head mobster of Gotham. He's not a Batman level villain in my book...or if he is, he is a Mad Hatter level villain.

Bizarro. He's written like a kid with a mental condition. People don't realize that all he's supposed to be is a dark mirror of Superman. That shouldn't automatically mean that he's, for lack of a better word, retarded.

#18 Posted by Docnick (10454 posts) - 1 year, 8 days ago - Show Bio

Metallo also needs some new making. He's not as much of a threat as he should be, and he's kinda overrated. With a background like his, he shouldn't be a b or c list villain. The Zooms need more light as well, and Wrath, Batman's REAL dark reflection should be tapped into the potential for a great character that is there.

completely agree, I'm tired of him talking like I R Baboon and basically working for other ''bigger'' villains, I want him to be intelligent, and as evil and twisted as Superman is good and moral.

Exactly. Maybe if Superman were known for his intelligence then it'd at least make sense, but since he's not, I don't see why he has to be a moron. You want the opposite of what Superman is? Make Bizarro a terrorist, or something. The stupid shtick never made sense to me, and it got old real fast.

A lot of Supes villains need a revamp.

@Delphic: Agreed with both of those. I really like the way Riddler was handled in Arkham City as a Jigsaw-type villain who works behind the scenes. As for Mirror Master... Well, I wouldn't know how to revamp him, lol.

Well Lex Luthor, Metallo and Brainiac already got some in Action Comics, Parasite is kinda in a constant state of revamps (although I'm fond of the way he was in All Star Superman personally) I think as Action Comics and Superman in the New 52 continue we'll see a lot more revamped villains.

Wonder Woman villains for sure

Doctor Sivanna is one I could think of.

DC animated shows are pretty good at bringing greatness to worthless villains....look at people like Toyman, Mr Freeze, Mister Twister, Sportsmaster.

Is he really LOL...I don't read much Captain Marvel. DC actually does a pretty good job at transcending the corniness that some of their villains were known for... I honestly couldn't think of one that wasn't already mentioned

Marvel on the other hand...I can think of twenty poor bastards that just got left behind

Killer Moth could become a badass villain....but you know what? We already have a badass insect-based psychopath who's name is Firefly. And the Charaxes thing didn't work too well anyways...let him be a joke.

I'm with you on Mirror Master, but I actually like the Riddler. I'm not sure how he was presented at the end of the DCU, but around the zips, Riddler was working as a private detective willing to bend the rules to make a little dishonest cash, but mostly working as an honest man. I though making him a competitor to Batman in solving crimes was very clever.

What ever happened to KGBeast anyway? The last time I saw him was in Troika back in 95. Surely he has had a story since then.
