Earlier today DC Comics announced that they would be making their comic books available for purchase on digital storefronts like the Kindle Store, iBookstore and the Nook Store. That means that DC comics will be made available to purchase and to read on the more digital devices than before; a move that will likely expand the digital market, reaching more Android based tablet users. DC released the following press release in regards to the news, which we've posted below.

Burbank, CA – Nov. 7, 2012 – DC Entertainment, the #1 comic book publisher in the U.S., announced today its entire line of periodical comic books are now available for download from the top three e-bookstores including Kindle Store, iBookstore and NOOK Store™. The precedent setting new digital availability brings bestselling DC Comics and Vertigo periodical titles, including JUSTICE LEAGUE, BATMAN, SUPERMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS, ACTION COMICS, BATGIRL, WONDER WOMAN, GREEN LANTERN, FABLES and AMERICAN VAMPIRE, among many others, to an even broader audience of digital readers.
“As e-readers and tablets continue to explode in popularity it’s important for us to offer consumers convenience and choice in how they download digital comics and graphic novels and these new distribution deals with the top three e-bookstores do just that,” said Jim Lee, co-publisher, DC Entertainment. “We’re very excited to work with Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble to bring bestselling DC Comics and Vertigo periodicals to their e-bookstores.”
DC Entertainment is now the only comic book publisher to offer its periodical line-up across all major e-bookstore platforms. The deals reinforce a long track record of digital comics industry leadership and innovation from DC Entertainment that dates back to its game-changing decision to make its entire line available same-day digital with the launch of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 in Sept. 2011. That launch is widely seen as reinvigorating the comic book industry, and has led to increased sales of both digital and print comics.
Lee continued, “We were the first to offer our entire comic book line same-day digital and now we are the first to offer fans the convenience of multiple download options.”
In addition to now being available for direct download through the top three e-bookstores, DC Entertainment will continue to deliver periodical comics online at www.readdcentertainment.com, through the DC Comics and Vertigo apps, and all comiXology platforms.
Prior to this announcement only DC Entertainment graphic novels were available through the top three e-bookstores.

That is good news for Nook owners

I wish they'd come to Comixology, rather than doing it from a PC. I love downloading graphic novels as much as the next guy, but sometimes I want to get something new.

This is cool and all, but I'll be sticking with Comixology on my iPad. It's easier to have all my comics in one place rather than using different apps.

Hmm... I wonder if Amazon still has exclusivity on digital DC trades. I remember B&N were pretty pissed about it when those digital collected editions where announced exclusive to Amazon when the first Kindle Fire was announced.

It'd be nice if we were able to order DC off our Comixology App. Get to work on that Lee and maybe I'd buy more.

This. Here's hoping DC doesn't pull its support for Comixology on the iPad like it did on the Kindle.

I'll just do what I've been doing: order it on my iPhone and then download it to my Kindle Fire.

It is nice but digital comic are still a scam :

- no download on pc (online reading only)

- overpriced as hell for a digital, most of the time as expensive as a real copy and sometime more expensive

- no garanty if the service ro site close, for now you will lose all the comics

- no translation, it is like they want to close this business only for english speaker when they should think about all the customer they could gain in the world

I've got a Nook and I'm glad to hear it for sure.  I haven't tried the comixology through.

Can't do that outside of the US. I simply buy it on my computer then download it on my app.

Still too overpriced.Why is a digital comic from the 1980's still cost 2$ dollars.

This is a good sign for digital comics. Apple's iPads are pretty much going to always be too much for me to pay for a device that's not a gaming platform/PC so my household has a Kindle fire (maybe we'll get that XL kindle fire later on). The screen is a bit too small for comics at this point but I might give it another shot.

To those who keep mentioning the comixology app, I'd have to say that Comixology is far from the "be all, end all" of digital comics. To compare to pc gaming, it's no 'steam'. Comixology is cumbersome and confusing. Pretty much everyone that uses it has to do that first google search to see how to even FIND their purchased comics. It's hard to figure how to skip from last page to first page, the app always opens at your last read page which could spoil for another household member. It's just too crappy at this point. The frame to frame viewing is neat, but when I read a comic book...that's not how I read it. Like most I take in the whole page and then read sequentially.

I'm glad to hear DC is expanding. Hopefullly they'll have some good sales.

@craigymail: No Comixology on Nook anywhere :( I believe it's because B&N doesn't allow Apps with in-app purchasing. So this is definitely good news for Nook users...

ah right, that is a bummer, might be worth seeing if you can sideload it on, its something i take for granted but when i had my windows phone i had to use the DC app since Marvel refused to develop one for the platform. Hopefully someone somewhere is working on this.

Hot dog this is great news for me since I'm a Kindle Fire user. Still, the Comixology app hasn't failed me yet, but I wanna know when Marvel is going to do this now.

It doesn't matter. I have a ton of comics that I want to read and no room to store it. My bedroom is tiny, and I share it with my little brother. Digital comics save people from having to buy a physical issue and throw it away when they run out of space to store it. Plus, I can access it anytime, anywhere, so I can read comics on my smartphone while on the subway.
