Bras and the Family Hit the Countryside in Daytripper #5
Lately I've been trying to take a break for being a lifelong superhero junkie and expand my comic reading to other stories presented in this brilliant medium that we hold so dearly. Moon's Daytripper is a great example of the brilliant literature that can can be presented in this form and why blending the art and writing enhance the experience. This is only the second time I have read this comic, but once again I was impressed. This issue centers around an 11year old Bras visiting his family in the countryside. Its nice to follow Bras as he enjoys the simple pleasures of youth. We learn more about his early life, meet his extended family, and the story of how he came to known as a "miracle baby". Moon and Ba are a great combination in the way they writing and art blend together to make you feel like you are right next to Bras rather than an outside observer, simply reading about what is going on. Dave Stewart's understated water color style coloring really lends itself to this countryside setting, particularly with the lighting in the various scenes.
One of my roommates noticed me reading this issue and asked me what it was about. I could not give a straight answer right away, but after a few moments to think about it, I explained that anyone who appreciates subtle details, fluid writing, and getting to know a person would enjoy Day Tripper. Some might find it boring or confusing, but that makes an ever better case for the mature readers advisory on the cover. This issue is definitely worth a read
