Dawn

Origin

Dawn is the Goddess of Birth and Rebirth. She is immortal and can travel between the planes of existence with ease. The nature of her birth and powers are have yet to be revealed. She is thought to be the original Virgin Mary is one of the only entities that can travel between Heaven, Earth, and Hell.

Creation

Cheesecake Dawn

Dawn has her origins in the pin-up artworks of J.M. Linsner and she graced the covers of his breakout anthology series Cry for Dawn. Having little to do with the content he set about giving this striking red-head with one eye, Veronica Lake style, hidden beneath a bang of hair and the other streaked with 3 blood red tears.

The result was Lucifer's Halo, a six part exploration of the character in relation to a cental figure of Darrian Ashoka. the series was a hit and while Dawn carried on her duties as cover art on the Crypt of Dawn anthologies she spawned 2 more series of her own and numerous crossovers with other comics.

Dawn remains the focus of Linsner's cover art and appears on every Dawn related series cover. She also often appears as little abstract pieces in anthologies and short stories.

Character Evolution

Cry for Dawn

Dawn has remained a consistent figure through out her history. Firstly as cover-art only. Then as goddess and guiding hand to Darrian Ashoka on a voyage of self discover to his true nature. he next full outing was in Return of the Goddess where as becomes an avenging angel to the witches of earth and styles herself as earth protector from Lucifer.

We see a more violent side of her character and the more metaphysical side of her existence is expanded from the sometimes abstract artworks of Linsner. Since Linsner is the creative force behind his own characters and writes and draws the comics himself his characters remain solid, focused and true to character throughout.

Currently her last solo appearance was in the Three Tiers that again follows Darrian Ashoka during which she makes few appearances but watches over her champion as he fulfills a prophecy she made. That prophecy is fulfilled and she has promised to be with him again now it is done.

Lucifer's Halo

Lucifer's Halo Dawn

Dawn, also known as Aurora, is the Goddess of Birth and Rebirth. Cernunnos known also as Death or the Horned God was her lover. By being Cernunnos' lover, she basically “adopted” all things that were dying and evil. The meaning of the three tears on her left cheek is not well known, though some speculate that it was caused by all the sorrow she went through by being Death’s lover and that it serves as a constant reminder of how Death took away her innocence. The reason that you can always only see her left eye is because it was believed that witches only cried out of their left eyes. That is how she honored the witches that served and praised her.

Dawn seems to have an amicable relationship with God better known as Ahura Mazda who refers to her as Aurora. She is aware of the relationship between Ahura and Lucifer. Ahura asks Dawn to get Lucifer's Halo which she promptly agrees too after having a discussion with Ahura about the importance of the Halo. Dawn goes to Hell to get the Halo which Lucifer relinquishes after a conversation with her that turned awry when he accused her of mocking him. Dawn appears to Darrian once again to a brief yet joyous reunion where Dawn gifts Darrian with Lucifer's Halo. And he is promptly attacked by angels wanting to attain it.

The Goddess Returns

It was Dawn’s duty to guard over all witches and to protect the earth. When the witches on earth praised her, her powers grew stronger. Death took away all Dawn’s innocence, teaches her everything about heaven and hell and what was beyond it. When Dawn became Death’s lover, he granted her the power to travel over any plane and dimension that her heart desired. Dawn is unique in that she alters her appearances to match the expectations of those who are viewing her. In other words, she appears differently to everyone who sees her.
Her lover Cernunnos was reincarnated into a human by the name of Darrian Ashoka who lived a tough life in the Post-Apocalyptic New York City. He, along with a friend, used to take parts in massive fights against others in order to attain the belongings of the losers. One day he met Dawn after one of the battles and he quickly follows her only to have his world turned upside down. She, aware that it was Cernunnos reincarnated, did everything in her power to make Darrian aware of who he truly was. They shared a night together which made Darrian question many things. Realizing that there was more to life than just constantly fighting, Darrian, decided to leave in search of a cathedral which he finds and is forced to fight finding himself back where he started and still searching for Dawn.

During the events of Dawn: Return of the Goddess she appears to a young woman named Mary after being summoned by her best friend, Bridget's death, who was being persecuted because she was a witch. She protects Mary and tries to uncover who is behind the persecution of witches only to find out that it's Lucifer under a human guise. During the course of the story we find out that as a sacrifice for becoming goddess Dawn cannot procreate. We also find out that before there was Cernunnos she was also romantically linked with a being named Ilmarinen. Dawn had to choose between the two of whose lover she would become and she chose Cernunnos although it seems Ilmarinen still has feelings for the Goddess.

Three Tiers

The Queen

During Three Tiers she barely makes an appearance as its the story of Darrian Ashoka's sojourn in Europa following the events of Lucifer's Halo. Dawn had told him they would not meet again until certain events had come to pass and they all do in this series and as Darrian returns homeward on a ship Dawn is seen on the docks sadly watching him headed home but does not contact him yet.

Interestingly the image of Dawn is everywhere in the series. He meets a young girl who looks like a youthful version of Dawn and makes love to her. Darrian also meets a Queen who looks just like Dawn but wearing large sunglasses. When he gets to makes love to her, as Dawn predicted, he wakes and finds her a twisted and charmless vision of her that he might have just been blinded to. Finally he meets a whore who looks like a tired and rundown version of Dawn and he too makes love to her, inline with the prediction.

Guest Appearances

Dawn guest stared in Witchblade comics where she was revealed to be the blades midwife.
