In 1973 Hamburg-based publisher Williams Verlag became the German license holder for reprinting Marvel comics, previously only sporadically reprinted there. In January 1974 Verlag launched a line of Marvel titles, which included horror title Das Monster von Frankenstein, reprinting the US Marvel series The Monster of Frankenstein translated into German by Hartmut Huff, with back-up features usually provided by Atlas-era horror short stories.Marvel US' series, retitled in later issues as The Frankenstein Monster, had ended abruptly mid-story with #18; unusually, Verlag opted to continue the story when they reached this point in their reprint run, and Das Monster von Frankenstein #26 thus contained a brand new story written by Huff which carried on from where the US strip ended. From #27 on, the series began reprinting colourised versions of the Monster's stories from Monsters Unleashed. The series cancelled with issue #33.
