Star Wars: The Clone Wars 5.14 'Eminence' Review

Posted by k4tzm4n (36138 posts) - - Show Bio

I've been a big supporter of this show and I'll absolutely be the first to admit that this season has been pretty lackluster. The premiere episode was solid, but then we were dragged through a course of events that completely paled in comparison to the stuff we've been excited for. The Rebels? Drawn out. The Padawans? Adorable at first, but were given too many episodes. The droids? Drawn out once again -- not to mention annoying at times. But now the show is returning to the last season's cliffhanger that piqued our interest: Darth Maul's back and he's going to cause chaos with his brother, Savage Opress. I'm extremely happy to report that not only was their reappearance fantastic, but the episode was amazingly good as well.

Basically, the two are discovered as they drift helplessly through space by the Death Watch. They're cautiously nursed back to health upon finding out they share a common enemy. From here, an uneasy alliance forms. Death Watch simply wants to defeat the Jedi and reclaim Mandalore. But, as expected, Maul isn't one you can trust and he immediately has plans of his own. He tells the Mandalorians they'll need more resources and muscle if they wish to succeed, and this is where the adventure begins. The two Sith and army of jetpack badasses visit various criminal organizations with one simple message: join us or die.

      Yes, he uses the darksaber!
I had a silly smirk on my face for practically this whole episode. Not only was it overflowing with fun and brutal action, but it moved to plot forward at an able pace (despite never turning to the Jedi's side of things). Additionally, it was packed with so many moments that I can only bluntly describe as "so damn cool." A double-sided lightsaber toss to decapitate a bunch of officials at a table? Jaw-dropping. Savage simply bumping his head on a light after standing up? Lighthearted gold. FREAKING EMBO RETURNS? Extra epic (even though he primarily gets whupped). This honestly isn't even scratching the surface of scenes that had me cheering.  The visuals were pleasing here, too. The establishing shot of Death Watch's base was gorgeous and combat looked top-notch as lightsabers, blasters and flamethrowers filled the screen.

Sure, 'Eminence' isn't that complex or elaborate, but it was a totally joyous beginning to this story. This episode is the long overdue return of a darker tone and managed to do so in an incredibly entertaining manner. There's constant action and seeing the uneasy alliance progress has me quite excited to see how this plot will unfold . This is what the show has been missing and I'm beyond pleased to say that the reemergence of the Sith brothers is well worth the wait.

Not to mention, it feels like some of the earlier episodes, or rather, the story arcs, were out of order. But I'm glad to see Maul and Savage back in action after so long.

I'm so glad this show is getting back to what makes it epic, I'm glad to see that the Clone Wars are finally getting back to, y'know, the WAR side of things.

This whole episode was awesome and this whole alliance and war Maul and Death Watch has started better last longer than the stupid droid and rebel episodes, if this is going to be as big a war as they're building it up to be it better feel like a freakin' war and not one or two little battles or some crap like that. This whole season has been pretty boring and this new episode better be the beginning of something big and epic.

Can i just say i have a new found respect for bounty hunters , that one chick went step-to-step with Maul and managed to walk away from it.

According to Sam Witwer, it's a 3 episode arc.

What?! Seriously?!

How do a bunch of droids get four episodes while an epic alliance between Maul and Death Watch only gets three? That's bull crap.

Maybe its going to lead into another bigger arc.

This episode immediately went on my favorites list.

Savage's double lightsaber "talk" was a great moment even if they didn't animate it. The rest of the episode was filled with action and manipulation that I would not expect to see in a cartoon. Of course, without the blood.

Well that sucks. I was hoping for Anakin or Ashoka or Dooku or Grevious or several other Jedi that deserve a lot more screen time to interact with them. I mean c'mon, they always have an opportunity to create amazing interactions with these characters, yet keep them away from each other. I can understand Anakin not meeting Grevious until Ep. 3, but no Ashoka vs Maul or Dooku? No Anakin meeting Death Watch? No other episodes featuring other members of the Jedi Council? Nuts >_<

I'm not an expert in star wars chronogy and have to admit I didn't see a single episode of clone wars (except full movie) but how's Maul alive if he was killed before the beginning of clone wars? o

@asIsuspected: he was brought back to life ....with magic....force magic , by a force witch who could fly and turn into green smoke.

Gotta get back into this, so psyched.

Can we just this show become entirely about the Villains with the Jedi only showing up occasionally?

Because their arcs seem to be consistently the best.

@k4tzm4n: I have to admit I have actually boycotted this series for as long as they had the droid storyline. So seeing this was a refreshing change.

I thought it was a great episode, but I was disappointed with the confrontation with the Hutts. These are supposed to be Crime Lords Supreme, with the galaxy in fear of them, and all the protection they have are a dozen plodding guards and three or four bounty hunters!? A mall has more security!

I hope when they move to Disney they put more resources into depicting battles like this. This episode made the Hutts look like a zero threat.
