Each week we take a close look at a comic collectible. That means taking it out of the package. While Star Wars didn't start out as a comic book, there's no denying the numerous great series we've had over the years. We currently have Brian Wood's STAR WARS, which has been fleshing out the period after Episode IV. This week the second issue THE STAR WARS comes out which gives us a strange take on the universe, compared to what we're used to, since it's based on the original screenplay.

Hasbro has released a new line of action figures called The Black Series.

Aside from the traditional 3.75" figures, there is also a 6" line in fancy-looking boxes.

I went with Darth Maul and a Sandtrooper. The Sandtrooper is actually my second favorite kind of Stormtrooper (my favorite is the Snowtrooper for some reason).

Good thing they didn't make a Snowtrooper figure because it'd probably look a little silly not being in snow.

The Sandtrooper comes with three blasters and a backpack.

The 6" format allows for more articulation. That lets you put the figures in different poses without them looking ultra-stiff. It's also easier to get them to stand since you can position their feet as well.

The other cool thing about the Sandtroopers is the dirt/dust adds more detail. The regular Stormtrooper looks too artificial being all white, for some reason.

I have always wondered what Darth Maul would have thought about the Clone Troopers or Stormtroopers.

The Darth Maul figure offers a little variation. He comes with his two lightsabers that can join together for his double blade.

The figure also comes with a pair of micro-binoculars. Always good when you're trying to find pesky little chosen ones.

The other cool thing is this figure comes with a second head. You can remove the cloak (which has a head attached) and put on the unhooded one.

Without the cloak, he looks like he's ready for action. He's ready to take on any Jedi-poodoo. Again, with the different articulation, you can position him in several ways to capture the action pose you're looking for.

There are a couple of cloth pieces on the figure so his outfit isn't all molded plastic. There is a good amount of detail all around.

The problem with these figures is they retail for $19.99. That seems to be the going price for today's collectible figures but twenty bucks for a single figures is starting to feel a little pricey. Still, it's a good looking figure.

That's it for this week. Do you like your Star Wars figures 6" or 3.75"? There is also a new line of 3.75" figures in this Black Series. We'll have another item featured next time.

I like the bigger figures much more. The smaller you go, the more details you loose. But then again, I am not an action figure guy, but a statue collector, so of course I prefer bigger displays of characters I like.

Oh and the Sandtrooper is my absolute favorite Imperial force, just as Darth Maul is my favorite Sith. Such a shame that they killed him so quick. They should've kept him for the whole trilogy, instead of bringing Count Dooku (or whatever his name was) in. Lee was such an underwhelming presence in those movies.

Dart Maul was one of the only good things about Episode One.

Really nice, if I was still into collecting figures I'd definitely be picking these up.

When I was collecting I definitely preferred the 3.75", but it's really strange that it took this long for 6" figures to be made. They look pretty good.

8 year old me would have loved these. 41 year old me can't be bothered to care, let alone pick them up.

But I do appreciate the CV staff taking the time to show these off. You guys and your work are fun to read. I enjoy these write ups and pictorials even though I never pick up the products you're highlighting. :)

Less prequel-oriented items. More original trilogy.

I picked up Darth Maul and Pilot Luke over the weekend at Target, I haven't broken the seals yet, but they look fantastic. The details in the figures are amazing, I wish I could have picked up the R2-D2 and Sandtrooper figures as well, but my pockets just weren't having it >_<
