Fox Looks For More Franchises

Looks like Fox didn't have the best summer at the box-office.  They're looking to broaden their superhero movies.  I think it goes without saying that we want a Deadpool movie.  Even though we haven't really seen Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool yet, I'm sure he's going to nail it.

As far as a 'young' X-Men spin-off, I hope they're talking about our beloved X-Men but younger rather than the actual "YOUNG X-MEN" comic.

A re-vamp of Daredevil would be cool.  The last wasn't too bad but could've and should've been way better.

Here's what Variety reported:

Though Fox has no plans for a major overhaul, the studio has scheduled a strategy meeting to assess the status of its superheroes, a group sorely missed this summer. On the agenda, Fox will mull the possibility of more "X-Men" spinoffs, including a young-X-Men project as well as "Deadpool," based on a character played by Ryan Reynolds in "Wolverine." The studio is even considering reviving the "Daredevil" property.

Daredevil #111

Who Is Lady Bullseye?

I'm not sure what to think about this new character.  I'm all for another tough villain but she seems like what her name implies, a female version of Bullseye.  I suppose Daredevil and Bullseye have gone at it too many times now.  It's nothing new when it happens.  It doesn't matter how noble Matt could be, you'd think he'd want to do something more to end Bullseye's antics.  Their last encounter at Ryker's was pretty good though.

After thinking about it a little, I guess this new character could work.  We could use a new villain like Bullseye but without all the baggage he has.  The question is, who is she?  Why does she want to confront Daredevil?  Do they have some secret past?  Matt sure does have some interesting ladies in his life.  You almost want to feel sorry for him.

I wonder when we can expect Lady Bullseye and Bullseye to meet.  Wonder if there's a connection besides just the name.

Who is Lady Bullseye? And just what does she want with Daredevil? The answers begin in Daredevil #111, from Eisner-award winning writer Ed Brubaker (Captain America, Criminal) and rising star artist Clay Mann, kicking off the hotly-anticipated new arc that will rock Matt Murdock’s world! If you’ve been itching to jump into the award-winning, critically acclaimed Daredevil then this is the perfect jumping on point for you! Plus, this issue feature a cover by red-hot artist Marko Djurdjevic (Thor) plus variants by superstars Terry Dodson (Uncanny X-Men) and David Aja (Immortal Iron Fist)!

It all begins here and no Daredevil fan can afford to miss the beginning of the “Lady Bullseye” arc in Daredevil #111!

Daredevli Saga

Free Daredevil by Ed Brubaker Saga on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited

You might still be able to pick this up at your local comic shop.  They were free also.  It's pretty cool when Marvel puts out these free comics.  It's a good way for new readers to get caught up.  It's too bad they can't take this free-ness and make comics cheaper in general.  But this is like an investment for them.  If people pick up the free comic, they'll see the cool stuff their missing and hopefully start buying the series on a regular basis.  Either way, check it out.

A saga recapping the Eisner and Harvey-award winning Daredevil by writer Ed Brubaker is now FREE on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited.  If you’ve missed any of this modern classic or just want to revisit this critically acclaimed run, then be sure to read the Daredevil By Ed Brubaker Saga right here:

http://marvel.com/digitalcomics/titles/Daredevil_Saga.2008.1

Plus, Daredevil By Ed Brubaker Saga gives a first look into Daredevil’s next great foil – Lady Bullseye – who makes her first appearance in the upcoming Daredevil #111.   But is she friend or foe?  You’ll have to pick it up to find out!

So before you pick up part 1 of Lady Bullseye in Daredevil #111 by Ed Brubaker and Clay Mann, head on over to Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited and read the absolutely FREE Daredevil By Ed Brubaker Saga.

This post relates to: Stjepan Sejic, Magdalena, Daredevil, Ande Parks, Phil Hester

"Fine, I'll give you a piggy-back ride once around Hell's Kitchen."
Here's another review/preview.  The Magdalena/Daredevil comes out this Wednesday.  I have to say, Phil Hester and Ande Parks do a kick ass version of Daredevil.  I love what Bendis has been doing but the whole identity/marriage stuff just hasn't seemed right.  This is the traditional Daredevil that I grew up with.  Does that mean it's a step backwards for the character?  If so, I don't care.  Hester delivers some really cool images of Daredevil and makes good use of shadows and silhouettes.  I can't remember the last time I was really cheering for Daredevil as he was doing his stuff.

Magdalena?  I've only read her in Witchblade and First Born.  I like the concept of the character.  Pretty cool.  What did bother me about her here is the way she was portrayed.  I don't know if that's just how her character is but she seemed a tad...dim at times.  We get the typical and expected missunderstanding/heroes-fighting sequence.  Guess who had the misunderstanding?  There was also another moment in the issue where she was gonna make a huge mistake and I was practically screaming at her to wisen up.  Almost like in the horror movies where you see the killer coming up from behind and the character is just slowly strolling along a darkened hallway.

Over all it was a pretty good issue.  Will it have any major impact for either character?  Maybe not.  I would've liked to see this as a mini-series rather than a one-shot.  But it was a great showcase of them.  Seeing them in action as they should be portrayed.  I spoke with Phil Hester after I interviewed him and I know this was something he was excited about doing.  If you're a fan of either Daredevil, Magdalena, or Phil Hester, you owe it to yourself to check this out.

4.5 out of 5 stars!

This post relates to: Phil Hester, Daredevil, Magdalena, The Darkness

The new  Darkness ongoing series comes out next week, December 12th.  I recently interviewed writer Phil Hester:

G-Man: Let's start with The Darkness #1. We find Jackie in Central America in a place called Sierra Muñoz. Why the change of scenery? A way to get away from the events of First Born? Is this a way for Jackie to be "free" to be on his own?

Phil Hester: All of the above. Jackie's dual lives come to a head at the same time and it's clear to him that the events of First Born make for a natural breaking away moment. It's an interesting choice, because on the surface it looks like he's just running away from himself again, and maybe he is, but once you get a look at what he's up to in Sierra Munoz you might come away with the impression that he's actually starting to take his criminal ambitions and his supernatural powers more seriously.

G-Man: Interesting. How much time passes between First Born and #1? About six months.

Phil: How much time passes between First Born and #1? About six months.

G-Man: Will we see any crossovers with Sara Pezzini, Witchblade, the baby, or Angelus?

Phil: Someday, but the first arc (1-6) will be self-contained. I think our first guest star will actually be Aphrodite IX.

G-Man: How many issues (or story arcs) do you have planned out?

Phil: The first year and a half or so. The first arc is a hard six, and the next arc has a little more wiggle room as it's composed of one or two issue arcs that all tie together.

G-Man: Darkness Levels (mini-series) seemed to slightly change Jackie's origin. I think I read Marc Silvestri saying that both histories were true. Is that the case with you? Can we go with Levels as his origin or does that take place in an "alternate" universe for the video game?

Phil: I think The Darkness has actually been around long enough that his origin is almost Batman-like, meaning as long as you stay true to the core concepts of the character's origin you can tweak it here and there as the years pass and not really mess things up.

For the rest, either check out my blog or Phil's page: www.comicvine.com/phil-hester/6833//

On a somewhat related note, Phil is also writing and drawing the upcoming Daredevil/Magdalena crossover set for release in February!

Faiths Collide in Latest Top Cow/Marvel Crossover!

Top Cow is proud to announce their latest crossover one-shot with Marvel Comics in The Magdalena/Daredevil. The supernatural one-shot is scheduled for release in February 2008.

The Magdalena/Daredevil is possibly the most natural of the crossover events to date with these two characters both steeped in Catholicism crossing paths for the first time. Written and drawn by The Darkness scribe Phil Hester (Green Arrow, Superman Confidential) and Ande Parks (Green Arrow, Superman Confidential), the crossover issue brings together the Catholic Church's holy warrior and Daredevil, the Man Without Fear from Hell's Kitchen. When a demon seeks revenge on the Church's past transgressions only The Magdalena and Daredevil stand in his way.

"I can point to Frank Miller's run on Daredevil as one of the things that crystallized my decision to become a cartoonist. To follow in Frank's footsteps for even 22 pages is a thrill," said Phil Hester, "Magdalena is poised for a very bright and busy future, and hopefully this crossover will be a nice appetizer for her spotlight season in the Top Cow universe. A crossover between a soldier nun and a troubled Catholic boy who grew up to wear a devil suit and beat up bad guys is a no brainer. I won't say I've been saving myself for the right project to both write and draw, but when this one became available I knew I had to handle both chores."

The Magdalena/Daredevil will feature a painted cover by Hester and Stjepan Sejic (First Born, Witchblade) and carry an SRP of $3.99. Additional information regarding The Magdalena can be found at www.topcow.com.

This post relates to: Daredevil, Frank Miller, Bill Sienkiewicz, John Romita Jr, John Buscema, David Mazzucchelli

Daredevil's come a long way.  It's almost like he's become a completely character.  Yeah, change is good.  Characters need to grow or they'd get stale.  Daredevil just seems to have the X-Men syndrome.  He gets getting bet up, not just physically but emotionally.   This would be cool to have but I don't think I'll be willing to fork out $60 bucks next week.  (Although you can order it online for almost half the price if you're willing to wait until December, a little more $$ for the variant cover).

Marvel is pleased to announce that the Daredevil By Frank Miller Omnibus Companion, collecting more of Miller’s groundbreaking DD stories, has now expanded by over 120 pages! In addition to collecting Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #27-28, Daredevil #219, 226-233, Daredevil: Man Without Fear #1-5, and Daredevil: Love And War, this collection includes a bevy of never-before-seen extras! Penciled pages by David Mazzucchelli! Frank Miller’s Daredevil series bible from 1980! The original plot to Daredevil #219, the script to Daredevil #233 and the original drafts of the landmark Daredevil: Man Without Fear are all featured in this essential hardcover for any Daredevil fan!

Exploring Daredevil’s earliest adventures and his later tragedies, this Marvel Omnibus features re-mastered pages from these issues, restoring the coloring to match the original perfectly and presenting a Daredevil experience like never before! This November, Daredevil By Frank Miller Omnibus Companion gets bigger and better—and no Marvel library is complete without it!

There’s nothing like the Marvel Omnibus experience!

This post relates to: Daredevil, Ed Brubaker, Marko Djurdjevic, Michael Lark, Mr. Fear, Black Tarantula

Big surprise.  Actually I am.  I've been enjoying Brubaker's run.  How could you not?  But I don't really care for Milla.  Let her go to jail.  Lilly Lucca?  Whatever.  I do have to say that for an issue #100, I wasn't overly impressed, even though Brubaker wrote it.  There wasn't anything super special.  Also Marvel decided to make a over-sized issue by including two reprints from old issues of DD.  Yeah it was useful to figure out who the heck Mr. Fear was but I don't really care about him either.

Marvel is pleased to announce that the highly-anticipated Daredevil #100 has sold out at Diamond (though copies may be available at the retail level). Featuring the multiple Eisner-Award and Harvey-Award winning creative team of writer Ed Brubaker and artist Michael Lark, in addition to some of the greatest artists from Daredevil’s history, Daredevil #100 featured an intense look at the tortured psyche of Daredevil as he seeks to overcome Mr. Fear and the Enforcers. This landmark issue has thrilled fans and critics alike, leading to a quick sell out at Diamond!

“That's great to hear!” exclaimed Brubaker of the sell out. “I knew when I saw all the artists’ pages coming in that this would be something special. I just hope that if this is anyone's first issue they'll stick around to see what's coming next. Mr. Fear just ripped a huge piece out of Matt Murdock's life, and what happens next isn't going to be what anyone is expecting.”

IGN.Com’s Jesse Schedeen deemed the issue a “must read” and gushed, “Ed Brubaker has the potential to become the greatest writer in the 40 years of Daredevil comics.”

“Daredevil is a must read book month in and month out,” exclaimed Newsarama.Com’s Richard Renteria.

With numerous awards and critical buzz for Daredevil, Marvel urges retailers to check their orders on upcoming issues of this acclaimed series. Matt Murdock’s being pushed to his edge and if he’s not careful, Daredevil #101 may be the issue where it all might just come down crashing around him! And in Daredevil Annual #1, Daredevil is reunited with a face from the past—Black Tarantula—and it’s time to learn if a man can really change.

Please note that Marvel currently has no plans to go back to press on Daredevil #100.

This post relates to: Daredevil, Ed Brubaker, Michael Lark, John Romita, Alex Maleev, Michael Turner, Lee Bermejo, Marko Djurdjevic, Gene Colan

Do I really need to tell you you should be reading Daredevil.  I remember when Bendis was writing and word got out that he was giving up the title to do other things.  Everyone was worried that it wouldn't be as good.  Well, nothing against Bendis, but I've been loving Brubaker's writing.  Pure gold.  So this is the typical jumping on point.

Matt Murdock has gone to hell and back over the past two years…but it’s all about to get worse for the Man Without Fear in Daredevil #100! The Eisner-winning “Best Writer” Ed Brubaker and Eisner-nominated artist Michael Lark join with some legendary friends to bring you an unforgettable anniversary issue. Featuring a cavalcade of guest creators—from John Romita Sr. to Alex Maleev—this is the beginning of the most shocking new story arc yet, as Daredevil discovers the true meaning of fear! And did we mention the issue features three different covers? Michael Turner and Lee Bermejo provide the 50/50 variant covers, while Marko Djurdjevic has produced a gorgeous wraparound cover that’ll have your jaw on the floor!

Jeff Marsick of Newsarama.Com exclaimed, “The uber-team of Brubaker and Lark continue their amazing and nearly flawless work and make issue one hundred one of the most anticipated books of the year.”

“The edgy, noir style of Brubaker’s writing and of Daredevil’s world is translated flawlessly to the page in Michael Lark and Stefano Gaudiano’s artwork,” said Kevin Powers of SilverBulletComicBooks.Com.

Daredevil #100 begins the next deadly chapter in Matt Murdock’s life, but even if he does survive, will he ever be the same? Get onboard for this star-studded, action-packed anniversary issue and find out why everyone can’t stop raving about the Man Without Fear!

This post relates to: New Avengers, Daredevil, Nova

Here's the list of Marvel goodies for this week.   Spider-Girl's been a fun read.  Almost like the classic Spidey tales without all the angst you have now a days.

Ed Brubaker's Criminal is a must read.  The man is brilliant.

Daredevil's been great too.  I'll probably pick up the Dark Tower guide book.

I just loved the Dark Tower series.  I still want more.

Exiles has been flying under the radar for some time.  It's like the old What if...? books.  Anything can go.  Teammates can die and don't come back like in the regular comics.

Punisher War Journal's been another fun read for me.  I had to stop reading Punisher for a while but haven't been let down with the writing and artwork here.

Let's not forget about New Avengers.  People are talking.  Who has been replaced by a Skrull.  After last issue, we have to wonder, is Spider-Woman a Skrull or what.  And what does the cover image below mean?  One of my favorite titles.

Hey True Believers, here’s your official list of comic books, collections and posters arriving in comic stores on August 8th, 2007.
