Guardian Atlantis
A Friend in Need is the next part of Atlantis Attacks and is by Gerry Conway and Mark Bagley. It stars Daredevil, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man as the Tyrannus and Madame Hydra subplot of Atlantis Attacks is resolved.
This story is in many ways a direct continuation of the last part, and is even written by the same writer, in fact these last 3 parts have all been linked pretty heavily if quite unrelated to Atlantis or the promise of Atlantis Attacking that the crossover title evokes. Madame Hydra and Tyrannus' plan is explained here and is actually linked to Ghaur in a reasonable manner to justify these last few issues that have deviated from Ghaur/Atlantis. We find out Tyrannus has his own motivations though and it all comes to a head with Madame Hydra kicking his ass because she's amazing. It's pretty standard stuff and based around Daredevil and Doctor Strange teaming up - which so far it seems this event is mostly just team-ups (so far we've had Iron Man/Namor, Spider-Man/She-Hulk, Punisher/Moon Knight, Spider-Man/Cloak and Dagger and now Daredevil/Doctor Strange. That's all but two issues so far!).
Again, it's an inoffensive story. These last 3 parts with the Serpent serum have been consistently very "okay". Readable but nothing really exceptional. Maybe they are better than I give them credit but the problem for me is that, just over a year before this crossover, Mark Gruenwald did a fantastic storyline with the Serpent serum which is constantly referred to in this story. It's a continuation but it's just nowhere near as good as Gruenwald's story.
But don't get me wrong, as I said these last 3 parts have been readable. And not just because they come after the Rob Liefeld drawn Spider-Man issue, they're just generic is all. With that said, this Daredevil issue has some cool character moments for Daredevil. This is at the period in Daredevil's life where he had ran away from New York after falling in love with Typhoid Mary and he wanted to die and literally went to hell and back. Anyway, Conway (who wasn't Daredevil's regular writer, I might add) explores some of Daredevil's pessimism and self-loathing and there's a nice, if somewhat odd, moment about how Daredevil and Doctor Strange are friends which seems random since other than a few random team-ups prior I don't think they ever really shared a friendship quite as close as suggested here.
Anyway, yes, another ok part of Atlantis Attacks except this time with some decent character moments to compliment the otherwise generic story. And the Serpent serum stuff is all over and done with now which means we can actually get back to what was introduced as the main plot - Ghaur and Llyra and, y'know, Atlantis Attacking.
