    Cyclops

Character » Cyclops appears in 11232 issues.

The first X-Man, Scott Summers possesses the mutant ability to fire powerful concussive blasts through his eyes that act as a portal to another dimension full of the force that makes up his optic blast. He is visually distinctive for the ruby quartz visor he wears to control his devastating power. A born leader, Cyclops succeeded his mentor Professor X to command the X-Men.

I've read a couple of times as of late of people mentioning that Cyclops optic blasts are keyed to some other dimension, which explains why he has not recoil from the blasts? There is more to it then just that but I can't remember the exact phrasing for what they used, but there was never any scans to prove it. Just what they were saying. So I was wondering if anyone had the scans or knew what issues it came from.

    Cyclops...

    Optic Blasts...

His blasts arent solar in nature... yes he absorbs solar energy, but what happens is the solar energy opens a dimensional portal in his eyes. The portal opens to a universe that consists of nothing but the ruby coloured energy he fires. The energy escapes through his eyes, creating an optic blast. The blasts do NOT give off heat or radiation, they are pure concussive force, nothing else...

    (That's what I've read a few places)

It still doesn't explain why he doesn't feel a recoil though.

he shouldnt feel any recoil if he is opening an apeture to another reality through his iris...

but the thing is at times he is shown to react to recoil..

That's why I'm just wanting to know if there is any proof to this. With a scan or at least an issue number.

@Precise, I'm still trying to track down the rest of the statements. Their spread out....

    from another forum

Yes, I belive Cyke is immune to his power. Stryfe alluded to this in ES.

I'd like to know how cyclops can see with an Extradimentional energy tap in each eyeball.

I mean thats his power ist it. Extra-dimentional energy mixed with sun light.

thoes black holes in his eyes must be pretty big.

The Extra-dimensional energy stuff was kind of honky to me. Yes, Cyclops powers needs to explain in a way where he doesn't snap his neck due to recoil from his force-beams but extradimensional energies? Was this "dimension" only reserved for Cyclops and is the dimension infinite? Sounds hand-waving.

Cyke's blasts used to give off heat.  He melted Ice off Angel's wings in the original X-Men 2.

But that was decades ago and long since retconned. ;-)

funny thing is that cyke showed a massive recoil in the onslaught story arc the scan is somewhere in the vine since ppl like to use it for power usage in his battle threads..

To the best of my knowledge the Extra Dimensional stuff has never appeared in an actual comic. I believe its only stated in one of the "The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe."  And even then it depends on the book. For example, TOHMU Deluxe Edition states his power comes from solar energy. If there is a scan or issue number where he or someone else actually confirms the Dimensional tap i would love to see it.

    Yeah.

Is recoil resistance any more absurd than the ability to produce optic blasts?

I'm sure that is where they are getting the information from then. I'm the same with you though, I would love to see an actual scan where it was explained and not in one of the handbooks.

Maybe it's just part of his power to not feel the recoil (maybe he did it in that scan for effect?).  I think I just read a preview to one of the First Class comics or something and Cyclops narrows his beams down to the intensity of a laser pointer.  Those don't have recoil.  Higher intensity lasers used don't either.  But I'm no physicist so who knows.  It's kinda like the physics of being able to fly.  How is it possible?  So part of Cyke's powers might deal with the recoil.

I know this thread has been abandoned for a few months, but I still have a question concerning this topic. If Cyclops' iris' have interdimensional gateways leading to a dimension filled with a sort of exotic energy that reacts violently in our dimension, then why does he often 'run out of juice', after shooting out a lot of powerful blasts in a short amount of time. Since he has to wear his visor 24/7, then the interdimensional portal is opened 24/7, so he shouldn't ever run low on power until he has used up all of the energy in that dimension.

well it may be that he requires his own personal reserves to open the aperture in the first place.

@Dark King:  If keeping the aperture open required effort on his part, there would be no need for the visor.
