Why Are People Still Upset That Cyborg Replaced Martian Manhunter, when people were okay with John Stewart Replacing Hal Jordan, Wally West Replacing Barry Allen, and Several Heroes Replacing Aquaman? Cyborg was in the Justice League pre-reboot, so it's not like the ONLY team that he's been affiliated with is the Teen Titans. And he was a founder on Smallville. Plus, since he's fictional and all--he didn't CHOOSE to replace J'onn. A writer decided that. I'm genuinely curious, and all perspectives are welcome.

I think the simple answer is Martian Manhunter has a larger following.

Because it was stupid. Cyborg should be in TT.

#4 Posted by OutlawRenegade (1251 posts) - - Show Bio

@Gambler: But John Stewart probably had little to no following before the cartoon

because Manhunter is awesome.....

Cyborg is Cyborg

Personally I accepted it after a week, embraced it by the second issue, and grew to like if not love it by the 9th issue. But comic fans who feel that they've been spurned can hold a grudge for the rest of their lives. Many people (myself included) are still pissed about Spider-man selling his marriage to the devil for example

@Primmaster64: Sorry, can you please elaborate?

I cant speak for everybody but I know and read plenty of comments from upset fans over John replacing Hal as well. In fact just about anytime a character is replaced there's gonna be some backlash. Granted I dont mind Cyborg being a member of the JLA but if I had my way it would have been someone else entirely. Black Canary ;)

Or maybe because Martian Manhunter has been a central character in the League for nearly 50 years?  I'm fine with Cyborg being a member, but no one will ever replace J'onn, and no one will ever write him out of the memories of any true JLA fan.

There's a difference between a Green Lantern replacing a Green Lantern and a cyborg replacing a martian. Same with Flash replacing Flash.

I have no problem with Cyborg being on the team, but I do have a problem with him being a founding member of the Justice League.

Because Martian Manhunter is the only founding member not in the New 52 League and has decades of history with them. And Cyborg was put in as this

#14 Posted by OutlawRenegade (1251 posts) - - Show Bio

@TheAnnihilator: I don't think that more diversity is bad. He has a useful powerset

#15 Posted by TheAnnihilator (1056 posts) - - Show Bio

@OutlawRenegade: I'm not really bothered by it because I've never been a big League fan, although J'onn is one of my favorite DC characters. And hey, he's green, that's real diversity!

@OutlawRenegade:

I wasn't happy about any of the replacements to be fair.

Martian Manhunter is the BOSS!

I accept things have to move on in comic books though, but I'll mostly stick with the era of superheros I like best. Hal Jordan was the best green lantern, that'll always remain to be true.

It annoys me when fan boys complain about this, it's insulting to Stormwatch

#20 Posted by TheSwordsman (1954 posts) - - Show Bio

MM should have been on the team and Steel (old style armor, not the new weird looking one) should be a member instead of Cyborg IMO.

#21 Edited by Rumble Man (11119 posts) - - Show Bio

It feels awkward

@TheAnnihilator:

better that compared to this

@Gambler:

That pic of mm attacking the JLA looks offensive to DCU canon

#22 Posted by TDK_1997 (14648 posts) - - Show Bio

Cyborg is a good add for the team but MM is from the original 7 and he deserved to be in that team.But his role in Stormwatch is good and I am really disappointed that he will leave the team in Stormwatch #12.

I really like having cyborg on the team, I actually want them to focus a bit more on him...

This is my stance on it basically. Arguably it's overkill to have two incredibly powerful aliens on the team but Cyborg belongs as a founding member of the Teen Titans, not the Justice League. I could see Cyborg as a League member five years later as that's evolution for the character, showing that he has matured from a Teen Titan to a Leaguer. That would have been better as opposed to making Cyborg a founding member of the Justice League from the get go.

But really, that doesn't matter. What's in question here is that he's been a main part of Justice League for an immense amount of time and now he's been replaced with Cyborg. Hell, I like Cyborg more than I like MM, but that doesn't mean I like to see the former on the Justice League.

Its completely changing the character and his history, of course fans of the character aren't going to like it. So the "difference it makes" is immense.

Also, I'd have a drink with the MM and talk about our respective campaigns any day.

The character and his history are the same, the only difference is he never joined the league.

@OutlawRenegade: because it like replacing thor from the avengers with d-man. and plus they take away the team's mental defences. and cyborg is just one of the many 'got into an accident turned cyborg' stories. MM is a FREAKING MARTIAN.

I actually like Cyborg being there and not Jonn. I mean, if he was there it would be just too overpowered. It's more balanced like this, brings new elements, they have Cyborg and their transportation and tech and all that. Even though that kind conflicts a bit with Batman's doing, it's actually good because then Bats can concentrate more on his other strong parts and cyborg is the main go to tech guy. but basically, it's because having a guy who is superman + another ton of powers in a team that already has superman and wondie and flash, etc.... is overkill. The power levels are more balanced now

#41 Posted by Twentyfive (2845 posts) - - Show Bio

You MMH fans are funny. He is still in the comics. I have no problem with Cyborg being a founding member. He has some cool powers. If it was some other dude who's powers weren't cool, and who's back story was going to suck, I'd have a problem.

Besides, what is the point of a reboot if you tell the same stories over and over again?

Life goes on, whether or not you like that MMH has been replaced. It isn't the whole world.

@MrMiracle77: That made me truly melancholic. Martian Manhunter is a great hero, Cyborg is ok...That's all.

Nope. Except for the last, J'onn has been in every incarnation of the League. If he never actually joined it, then his history has been altered dramatically as well as his character. That's indisputable. Fans don't like it, so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

His character is the same! Him joining the League dose not make or brake him. He will survive without the JLA as will they him. Moaning fanboys don't like it because any tiny change and they cry in to there Deadpool bed sheets at night.

Of course the JLA will survive it, but it doesn't mean people have to like it. Personally I could care less about MM's place on JLA, but Cyborg was forced into the spot and he still feels completely out of place.
