Daddy Keeps It In The Family...
Well then, `Crossed Family Values` certainly doesn`t mind delving into taboos that most comics would probably shy away from. No holding back here, it is a little disturbing...
The story is set in a world where a terrible virus has swept across the land turning it`s victims into deranged maniacs - imagine 28 Days Later, but these infected seem sexually as well as violently obsessed. There`s no explanation for this virus, no origins, it just....is.
This second installment takes place months after the first, and the Pratt family have set up `New Paradise`, a base in the mountainous valleys of Montana. The weather seems to be keeping the hordes of the Crossed away. But the Pratt`s real problem seem to be from within - the father is a total screwball. A Bible-bashing, God fearing loon with a cringe-inducing interest in his own daughters...
I`m talking incest.
Yep, Daddy has taken it upon himself to keep the population ongoing, it seems. You work out the rest.
But there`s more trouble in New Paradise - Dad has been experimenting/torturing one of the Crossed, captured and chained in a barn. What about infection...?
The art is good throughout in this issue, and the story...well, it`s all about shock tactics, David Lapham seems to have it in for religion particularly, a dig at the double standards of Christianity, perhaps.
This is most certainly NOT everyone`s `cup of tea`, but `Crossed Family Values` has me in it`s ghoulish thrall - whatever next?
