Y: The Last Man - #53: The Obituarist (Vertigo 3/2007)

Y: The Last Man : The Obituarist #53

Plot Summary

SPOILERS Do you remember way back in issue number 2, when Yorrick was handcuffed to a dump truck by a former supermodel named Victoria? Well this is a story that sort of catches up with her. It tells us how and what she has been doing for all this time. We open to find a couple of Amazonsabout to kill a woman who makes a living by pretending to be a man for women. Before they can do any real damage, Victoria comes up and stops them. Apparently, Victoria has taken over many of the Amazons just by offering them a job. She offers the cross dresser a job and takes her with her into the sewers. She has to go down and find the bones of an old sanitation worker. At first the new fish is afraid there might be rats, but has it explained to her that rats only live about three years, so there are no more. There she gets a radio call that says there is a stiff in the White house. At the White House it is requested of her to take care of all the funeral arrangements for Yorricks Mother. While she is looking over the corpse she sees a picture of Yorrick and begins to freak. All this time she had been telling herself, she only thought she was talking to a real man. That night her and "Bob" are in bed together, she is distracted by the picture she had seen tonight. She had been doubting her sanity, and now because of the picture, she wants to give a fine send off to Yorricks Mother. At the funeral we see that it is as classy as the one given to JFK. After it is over both Bob and Victoria are walking into an alley, when they spot a herd of rats. They see it as something of a miracle, and accept the fact that now they can be more than just "bodies" as they had been before the gendercide.

Y: The Last Man #53: The Obituarist

This is just about my favorite issue that does not deal with the story at hand. It is almost as if Brian K. Vaughn was asked "what happened to the body of Yorricks mom?" and he gave the most round about answer he could find. I am not ashamed at all to sing the praises of this particular book. It is a quiet off the beaten path kind of story, like the one Peter David did, about the execution of Crazy 8. At this point I can't recomend any of these books as jumping on points. Go back to the beginning and start there. Trust me you will enjoy it.
