Plot Summary
A special extra-sized Spanish-language issue, with the English script as bonus material! Blue Beetle takes Traci 13 to his family reunion, and having your girlfriend meet your family can be tough, especially when she's the only guest who doesn't speak Spanish! To make matters worse, two people have uncovered Jaime's secret identity — and one of them is the Parasite!
This is possibly the most difficult review I've ever written, since I had a hard time "reading" this book. Why, you ask? Well, DC Comics took the opportunity in the month following the end of John Rogers' run to present readers with a very unique one shot. Jaime Reyes, the Blue Beetle, is a Mexican American, and in an effort to embrace that heritage, this issue is presented almost entirely in Spanish. (Don't worry, there's a translation guide in the back.)
Now, I took high school Spanish, and I work in an environment where there is a lot of Spanish spoken, so it's not like I am completely unfamiliar with the language. What was very interesting to me was reading something that I only understood about 50-60% of the words, but because of the art, I was able to basically follow along without using the guide. It was also interesting to go back and fill in the blanks for stuff I missed along the way.
When I heard about this initially, I was concerned that the Spanish element would be shoehorned into the issue, but I was really pleased to see that it wasn't. The story is presented as Jaime takes his girlfriend Traci to a family reunion, and naturally, mayhem ensues. Guest writer Jai Nitz cleverly uses the Parasite as a villain who could end up speaking Spanish in the right situation, so that element worked for me. I've been a fan of Mike Norton's art since he worked on Gravity, so I'm always glad to see his work show up, even more so when it's on a favorite title of mine. I also have to give Norton a bit of extra credit for this issue, since it was his art that helped me understand what was going on when I couldn't understand all the words
While I certainly can't recommend this issue to everyone, I thought it was a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to see what Will Pfeiffer and Matthew Sturges have in store over the coming months.
