The Good
There's a modern-day witch hunt for the clones and an overly religious woman who's a part of it found Luke and a clone he was helping. She's looking for the original (Luke) for a certain reason. Also, Amelia visits her mother and has to make an important decision.
In this issue, we're introduced to Laura, whom we say for a little in issue #11, and we get a glimpse into her life and what made her so darn crazy. Her history snakes its way through the main narrative brilliantly. Although there are probably a few people out there that can sympathize with Laura, what's so intriguing about her is that her beliefs really drive her to some morally wrong and flat-out disgusting things in the name of her god and to further her own life. It's a character the reader will love to hate, and it's been a long while since the readers of this series have been introduced to a new character that wasn't a clone, so it's a nice change of pace. This issue mainly revolves Laura, her history, and what is going to happen with her next, which is pretty nutty.
Amelia is still worried about her husband, and she should be because Luke has been gone for two days. We get to see her interact with her mother and have to make a very tough decision for the future of her family. These scenes are a nice break up from the main story, and Amelia is still a very important part
To the best of my faulty memory, the last issue didn't seem too clear with how much time had past between issues #10 and #11. In issue #10, Vice President Davis announced to the world that clones exist. In issue #11, there's a manhunt underway. The writers pretty much come out and say it's been a whole year since issue #10, which helps put everything into perspective a bit more. I like the jump forward in time here quite a bit. It really works with the story.
Once again, Jose Juan Ryp does an amazing job with the art. He shows a tremendous amount of emotion within the faces of his characters and does a great job with artistically providing the story. He changes up perspectives within every panel. Sometimes view is angled. What he does well is keep each page feeling fresh and new for the reader.
The Bad
Not anything to really pick at here. We're witnessing a new and very interesting direction for this story line. Not the best place to jump on for new readers though.
The Verdict
CLONE #12 is a bit of a change up. It still focuses on "The Clones against the world," but the political aspect of the series is on the back burner, and the focus is more on a modern day witch hunt. Laura is an incredibly interesting and terrifying new character and what her plan to do with Luke, in the next issue, is incredibly creepy. The writing and art team here provide top notch comic book story telling, and if you haven't done so yet, you need to be reading CLONE, which is one of Image Comics' coolest series.
