What's Going On With The Hellraiser Remake?

I mentioned the other day when talking about a director's cut for Nightbreed that I really dig Clive Barker.  I have to say that the original Hellraiser rates up there as one of the true classic horror movies.  It was a simple movie that didn't need tons of the Hollywood glitz to tell such a good story.  The sequel wasn't too bad but kind of took a different turn.  The third, with the Cenobite that had CDs embedded in him...I didn't really care for that.  After that, I found it hard to keep up with the various other Hellraiser movies, despite or because of my love for the original.  I still keep a Pinhead action figure on my desk at home, along with my Lament Configuration (which Red L.A.M.P. refuses to even touch).

These days it seems that just about every horror movie is getting remade.  For some movies, it's a good thing.  I wouldn't mind a remake of Hellraiser just to start things over.  Even though I haven't seen most of the sequels now, I think they may have strayed too far from what the story should be.

The last word was that Dimension Films was working on a remake with Pascal Laugier (Martyrs) as the director.  Turns out, that is no longer the case.  According to Clive Barker's Twitter account:
"Pascal Laugier is regrettably no longer on the Hellraiser remake. I think Martyrs is extraordinary," Barker said on Tuesday. "I don't know much more. I mean why would anyone tell me? I mostly discover these things here or through friends who still buy the trades." Barker adds: "Sorry, did that sound cynical? Yeah? Good."

That's too bad.  While I'm not usually too keen on the remakes, the fact that Barker approved of Laugier directing it gave me hope.  Who knows what will happen now.

Would you want to see a remake of Hellraiser?  Do you think it should just be left as it is?  Could you imagine someone else playing Pinhead or would that be unheard of?

@G-Man: Jesus wept!! It's an interesting idea, as a big Clive Barker fan I of course loved all the Books especially Cabals Transformation into Night breed.  Me I cut my horror gum's on Hell raiser and it was at the time something wonderfully grotesque, I think to remake it now would only destroy it with cheap commercialism and the dumming down of the plot for today's audience's attention span.  With the style of film making to day it's very difficult to shock us and any remake would probably be laughed at an ridiculed unless like the original it shocked the pants off of us which it won't unless they insert cattle prods into the theater seats.

I seriously doubt it'll be as good as the original (or maybe I'm just hatin to early). There was a gritty film style to the old horror movies that just isn't there in today's remakes.

I also really, really liked Hellraiser.  The only changes I hope are made would be in the area of the Special FX.  Same story, just improve the FX, because they are a bit dated, BUT still a great movie.

I'm not sure what I'd want.  Part of me says to leave it alone.  The other part would love to see an update and a way to forget some of the later movies.

Oh i am so hating this idea early on.  What has the world run out of new and interesting ways to combine words originally into brand spanking new scripts, do classics need a make over does taxi driver with Robert deniro need a Camaro Concept Car, This whole remake idea is just a sucker punch to fans waiting to happen.

Why would you need to remake that classic?  It was a great movie and there is no point in ruining another great movie.  They need to start coming out with something original, as most of the new movies have been kind of so-so.

They'd probably still have the same actor playing Pinhead. I mean, Freddy Krueger has always been played by Robert Englund and the only reason that Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers have had different actors is becuase they both wear masks, so no-one can tell the difference.

I don;t adore the original... i just don;t think it held up as well as it could.. As a fellow Barker fan i would like to see it done in the way he wanted, im sad it is not being done by the person he wanted... very sad.

I want to see more of his stuff done, lets not rehash old films, lets make Weaveworld, or Books of Blood could have an audience... maybe..

You had me cracking up in your article when i read Red L.A.M.P wouldn`t touch the lament configuration, and good on him, I wouldn`t touch that crazy voodoo either, I love hellraiser and wouldnt mind a  remake of the movie just so I could see that world with modern fx, but I wouldn`t really mind if they never remade it, it`s already an amazing movie

I think we all agree that Hellraiser and Night Breed are incredible stories that sill have yet to show their potential on the big screen, a remake would be fitting if placed in the right hands with a killer script. Plus some mention FX effects... Can you imagine if the special effects artist that worked on PAN'S LABYRINTH did the effects for Hellrasier...! It would be incredibly awesome.

I don't see the reason for horror movie remakes. Most of the time it just seems lazy. Invent a new way to murder twenty-somethings posing as teenagers instead of making slight changes to an old way.
