In the United States, a Super-human Registration Act is passed, which decrees that all Mutants or Super-Humans must register with the government, giving all personal information, as well as powers.
Whose Side Are You On?
Overview of Key events of the civil war. Note: Since the Civil War arc is so massive in its scope, some of the information included here will be from comics leading up to the actual arc, and comics that detail events that occur directly afterward.
Tony Stark and Peter Parker go to Washington D.C. to try to refute the Super-human Registration Act. Peter is to act as Tony's eyes and ears. However, things go awry and an assassination is plotted against Tony by Titanium Man. However, it is later revealed to the reader that Iron-Man (Tony Starks) plotted the assassination. His motive was to show the need for a Super-human Registration Act, so in fact he is playing both sides. When Captain America is approached by SHIELD to see if he could neutralize all of those against the Super-Human Registration Act, he refuses and has to run out after they try to shoot him down. Captain America is denounced as a criminal by the President, and he is ambushed by S.H.I.E.L.D, yet still escapes.
The New Warriors, a group of mutants with their own TV show, trying to get higher ratings ambush Nitro, Coldheart, Cobalt Man, and Speedfreek. But Nitro, powers amplified by Mutant Growth Hormone, sets off an explosion, killing around 600-1200 people, at least 60 confirmed to be children. Of the super-human individuals involved in the incident only Robbie Baldwin and Nitro survived. Speedball was rocketed from the incident, hanging on to life, and Nitro jumped into the back of a passing pickup truck and fled the scene. This horrific event rushes the Super-human Registration Act, and within a week it gets passed. Although it is not necessary for a superhuman to give away his secret identity to the public, he or she is required to register with SHIELD, giving away all personal information. In return, SHIELD will provide some sort of safe-haven, pay heroes a salary, and they will be scheduled holiday breaks. This is seem as a slap in the face to a large portion of heroes, being forced to choose between become a federal employee, or stop fighting crime. Others, such as Iron Man, see this just as an evolution of Super-humans' roles in society. As a sort of reward for his support of the act, Stark gives Spider-Man an new "Iron Spider" suit that will enhance Spider-Man's abilities with technology similar to Stark's own Iron man outfit.
In a move that would shock the world, Spider-Man would demonstrate his support for both Iron-Man and the bill by coming out publicly in support of the Bill as Peter Parker and Spider-Man. In a shocking conclusion to the secret identity that Peter spent his entire adult life protecting he pulls off his mask in a news conference, saying "I'm Peter Parker, and I've been Spider-Man since I was 15 years old. Any Questions?" It is in this instant that Peter's life will change forever. Friends and enemies are hurt and shocked by the deception. Now knowing that his most hated enemy and one of his most faithful employees are one in the same J. Jonah Jameson fires Parker and begins contemplating legal action he can take against Peter for fraud. Also enraged by the perceived betrayal, Doctor Octopus finds Peter in plain clothes outside of the high school Peter teaches at and fights Peter. Other former villains also begin to launch attacks on Peter and those closest to him, causing Peter to realize one of the greatest fears he had of losing his secret identity. In order to protect those he loves Mary Jane and Aunt May are moved into Stark Tower where they can receive 24 hour protection and monitoring.
Behind the scenes, the U.S. government is working on completion to construction of a secret facility that will come to be known as the Negative Zone prison. This Facility 42 is located in the Negative Zone, and will be accessible at first through a portal controlled by Stark, Mr. Fantastic, and S.H.I.E.L.D. The prison was designed by Tony Stark, Reed Richards, and Hank Pym with the intention of housing superpowered individuals that did not comply with the Superhuman Registration Act. Meant for security, there are facilities for neutralizing and restraining individuals with just about any power imaginable.
As many current and former superheroes and villains begin signing up for the registration act an underground resistance movement begins to grow. Other superheroes begin to band together with Captain America against the act including Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Goliath, Cloak, Dagger, the Young Avengers and many others. The growing friction escalates until the first major battle between Iron Man's registration act support and Cap's "Secret Avengers". This battle involves all of the heroes associated with either side of the conflict, and comes to a climax with the unveiling of a cyborg clone of Thor (presumed to be the actual Norse god at the time) as being in support of the Registration Act. The appearance of Thor surprises both sides of the conflict, as few knew of his existence before this point. The clone is much more violent than the real Thor and kills Bill Foster with a lightning blast through the chest. Horrified at what has happened, Invisible Woman creates a force field around the battered remainder of the resistance allowing Cloak to teleport the team to safety. After the battle Thor is revealed to be a clone rather than the original that was created by Iron Man and Reed Richards and that his violent behavior was an unintentional glitch in their work. This event move begins shaking the resolve of some pro-registration heroes such as Spider-Man and the Invisible Woman and causing anti-registration heroes Nighthawk and Stature to switch sides.
After the death of Bill Foster, the Civil War now spills into the personal lives of Susan Storm and Reed Richards and threatens their marriage by disagreement over the course of action which Reed and Tony have carelessly embarked upon. Offended and hurt when Reed says that he is doing what he is to protect Sue, she erects a cylindrical forcefield that comes crashing through the center of all 35 floors of the Baxter Building and asks Reed if she looks like she needs protection. Unable to come to an agreement, Susan and Human Torch leave the Baxter building under the cover of night to join Captain America's underground resistance to the act. The Thing also finds himself increasingly torn by the direction of the Civil War. He is watching those he loves and respects fight and take sides against each other. On one hand he is against the Superhuman Registration Act because he does not believe in what it stands for. On the other hand he believes himself to be a patriot, and as such does not believe that it is proper for him to be fighting his own government.
At this point the Thunderbolts have already began a recruitment drive, attacking and capturing other former villains for the government to train and employ as a means to capture more of the renegade super-heroes and super-villians. The Super-Human Restraint Unit, a sub-division of SHIELD also starts to neutralize mutants who still display their powers (e.g., stop crime) without registering with SHIELD. Individuals such as Prodigy even get taken down by Iron Man himself.
While transporting captured heroes to the containment facility Spider-Man finds himself uneasy when Iron Man asks him to remain at the head of the caravan of vehicles because of his ability to sense danger. Since he has never disclosed his Spider-Sense to Stark, Stark may have found out about his ability by using the suit to monitor him. A battle erupts when the Secret Avengers meet the caravan to release the captured members of the resistance. Using info from the Yancy Street Gang the anti-registration group tries to free captured heroes. Going after Captain America himself, Spider-Man finds himself in a fight he may not win. The two eventually stop fighting because Spider-Man cannot bring Captain America in himself even if he does win. Meanwhile, the Thing has been unintentionally drawn into the battle despite the Things insistence on remaining neutral. Both sides of the conflict mistake his intervention as acting on their behalf. After the battle the Thing angrily states that he cannot take any more of the fighting, and will be leaving for France. The government puts a hold on all of his finances and closely monitors him. Despite the unwanted attention, Ben Grim makes his way to France away from the conflict.
Possibly because he trusted Peter more (or possibly to watch him turn) Tony Stark takes Peter Parker on a tour of the Negative Zone prison so that Peter can finally see more of the inner workings of the act. Peter's faith in the act had been shaky ever since first agreeing to assist Tony, however it is finally broken as he sees the inhuman conditions in which former allies and enemies are to be kept in the negative zone for their civil disobedience. Occupants are locked up in their cells, and many will never leave because of the escape threat they pose. Some are fully restrained to the point they cannot move their bodies at all and others yet are put in virtual reality goggles to immerse them in a fake world to pacify them. Before leaving Tony leaves Peter alone with Reed briefly. Unbeknownst to Peter, Tony is monitoring their entire conversation (presumably using the bugs designed into Peters suit) where Peter questions a nearly broken Reed Richards about what they have found themselves in. When he gets back to Stark Tower Peter rushes Aunt May and Mary Jane to grab what they can and flee Tony Stark's grasp. Tony crashes in through the wall of the building and begins a fight with Peter that would flow into the streets of New York. Tony incapacitates Peter with a fail-safe he built into Peter's suit. Peter is able to gain the upper hand by reversing the fail-safe (Peter being quite adept with computer technology had already secretly discovered the secret code in his new suit and hack Tony's programming). Peter flees into the sewer and Stark unleashes several of Spider-Man's enemies in the Thunderbolts into the sewers to capture Peter.
Captured and beaten nearly to death, Peter is saved in the nick of time by the Punisher who shoots and kills his attackers. Carrying Peter over his shoulder, the Punisher breaks into Captain Americas secret hideout to get Peter medical attention. The Punisher did not have much patience for costumed superheroes before the Civil War, and probably would not have become involved had it not been for Stark's alliance with the Thunderbolts allowing costumed villains to become government sponsored bounty hunters. Captain America disagrees with Castle's involvement because of his track record, yet tentatively allows him to remain with the group. His tenure with the Secret Avengers is cut short when a pair of costumed villains come to the Secret Avengers hideout with offer of truce to join the cause. Castle automatically shoots and kills them in cold blood causing Captain America to give the Punisher a severe beating. Castle would not fight back due to his respect for Captain America (who as it turns out also played a role in training Castle's army regiment), and simply takes the attack.Knowing that one of the members of the resistance is actually a double agent for Stark (specifically it is Tigra that is double crossing them), Captain America plans the most massive assault yet on the Registration Act. The plan is to infiltrate the Negative Zone prison and catch Stark off guard. What Tony does not know is that the morning of the attack Captain America sends Hulkling in disguised as Hank Pym to incapacitate Pym and take his place. As one of the key members of Stark's group, Pym has full access to everything about the Negative Zone Prison. Teddy, disguised as Pym, infiltrates the Prison and releases all of the anti-registration heroes and villains that had been captured until this point. Tony along with the registered heroes attempts to head off the Secret Avengers only to discover that the fixed fight that he had prepared in order to put an end to the resistance was now evenly matched. Attempting to stop the fight from leaving the prison, prison officials attempt to close down the portals to the Positive Zone, stranding everyone in the Negative Zone until things are resolved and the Secret Avengers are captured. Not allowing this to happen, Cloak uses everything he has to teleports all of the heroes and villains involved in the conflict through the portal into the middle of the skies of New York.
Raining down from the skies, flying heroes are instructed to assist non-fliers to the ground regardless of their affiliation. Once mobile, both groups begin fighting again, and inadvertently begin destroying everything around them. At the climax of the battle Iron Man has Captain America in his sights, and is ready to take him out of the battle. As instructed by Captain America, the Young Avengers's Vision phases into Iron Man's armor and partially solidifies to take his weapons out of the equation. Caught off guard and with his heavy armor effectively useless, Captain America is able to gain the upper hand against Iron Man. Pummeling him with his fists and his shield, Captain America raises his shield over the smashed helmet of Iron Man. Looking through the pieces of his broken armor up at Captain America he simply challenges "Do it." Before Captain America is able to bring his shield down upon Tony's face he is tackled by nearby government workers: police, firemen, and other emergency personnel. At first struggling against them, Steve Rogers stops and drops down. The battle around him begins to stop almost immediately. Rogers is horrified by the realization that he was no longer fighting for the people that he was sworn to protect. Looking at the carnage around him and seeing for the first time the true cost to everyone involved (civilian and super power alike), Captain America surrenders and tells his team to stand down. For better or for worse, Steve Rogers has single handedly ended the Civil War. While some heroes including Captain America are taken into custody following the final battle of the War, many escape including some key members of the Secret Avengers.

The Super-human Registration Act
====================================
In the United States, a Super-human Registration Act is passed, which decrees that all Mutants or Super-Humans must register with the government, giving all personal information, as well as powers. Registration is required of all Mutants and other Super -Powered individuals. Anyone without powers that wishes to don a costume to fight crime is also required to register. Individuals that accept and register will effectively become government S.H.I.E.L.D.. Agents and will be trained by S.H.I.E.L.D. and are required to work for the government on government salary. Amnesty for past actions is also offered as an incentive to registrants. Parallels can be drawn between the Super-human Registration act and the Mutant Registration Act.

‘Thor?’ gasps Sam Wilson a.k.a. the Falcon at the sudden arrival of his former Avengers teammate. Thor’s mighty hammer unleashes a massive blast of lightning, and over a dozen super being stand in the pouring rain. It’s raining. HARD. The mysterious Daredevil, Nathan “Cable” Summers of the X-Men and a possible horrible future and the beautiful Tandy Bowen a.k.a. Dagger stand close to Thor, and the Falcon asks him what he is doing. Thor seems to ignore the Falcon and everyone else until Dagger asks him where he has been – as everyone thought he was dead. ‘No, Dagger…that would be you!’ Thor exclaims, hurling his mighty hammer amidst the four heroes, sending them toppling.
Drenched, Dagger pulls herself up from the ground, exclaiming that something is wrong, that they have to get out of here – ‘This is really, really wrong!’ Thor’s hammer is returned to him, and the Asgardian calls everyone ‘Wretches’ and tells them that they are not going anywhere. With that, he slams his hammer onto the ground, sending concrete flying upwards, and toppling Luke Cage and the Young Avengers – Hulkling, the new Hawkeye, the new Patriot and Cassie “Stature” Lang.
Nearby, inside a badly damaged building, protected from the rain but not each other, the iconic heroes Captain America a.k.a. Steve Rogers and Iron Man a.k.a. Tony Stark, long-time friends separated by a very big difference of opinion stand, ready to face off against each other again. Iron Man tells Cap to not get up, as he doesn’t want to hit him again, what with Cap’s jaw practically hanging off and all. Tony tells Steven to surrender and he will get him medical attention from the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents outside.
Uniform torn, battered and bruised, Captain America gets to his feet and exclaims ‘You really think I’m going down to some pampered punk like you?’ Iron Man radios to his allies, telling them to activate their audio-ports…’This is going to hurt!’ he exclaims letting loose some sonic power in his armor, Captain America screams. The glass behind him shatters, and outside, Captain America’s allies fall to the ground, clutching their heads.
Protected, Susan Storm-Richards a.k.a. the Invisible Woman declares that this is horrible, that she can’t even look. Her husband, Reed Richards a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic assures Sue that he doesn’t like it either, and points out that this way there is no broken bones. Reed turns to Thor and tells him to stand down, as the S.H.I.E.L.D. clean up squad can handle things from here.
Back in the building, Iron Man admits that Captain America is tough, as this sonic frequency puts the human brain in shut-down – but Captain America is still trying to get up. Preparing a repulsor ray, Iron Man apologizes to Cap, but assures him that he will try to make it quick. ‘Just close your eyes and you’ll wake up in out super hero detention center…’
But before Iron Man can act, his armor’s alarm system alerts him to a non-human attack, and at that very moment Olympian Hercules busts into the building carrying a tanker of some sort – which explodes, sending Captain America flying into open space, and switches off Iron Man’s sonic attack.
The anti-registration-act super heroes get to their feet and engage the pro-registration-act super heroes in battle once more. Bill Foster a.k.a. Goliath increases his mass to take on his old friend, and the man he got his powers from, Henry Pym a.k.a. Yellowjacket. Daredevil smashes Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man, while the Vision blasts his “brother” Simon Williams a.k.a. Wonder Man and the Hulkling takes on Ben Grimm, alias “Thing”.
Suddenly, the ground opens up and Hercules bursts through, holding Iron Man above his head and shouting for the Falcon to see to Captain America, as they need to get him out of here. The Falcon speeds towards his former crime-fighting partner, exclaiming that he is halfway there, and swooping down and gathering Cap before concrete lands on him. Sam calls out to Cable, telling him that he wants him to interface his mind with Cloak’s and activate a teleport, calling out to everyone else to gather round and hitch a ride home.
On the roof of a building, several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents open fire on Goliath. ‘You’re kidding, right?’ Bill mutters before throwing a truck at them, then turning to Thor he exclaims ‘Get ready for the shortest comeback in history, Thor!’ But before Goliath can act on his words, Thor mumbles ‘I don’t think so’ and sends a powerful blast of lightning straight through Goliath’s stomach – and out the other side.
‘My God…’ Dagger whispers as she and the other heroes watch the giant Bill Foster fall to the ground. ‘Thor just killed Goliath!’ Tandy exclaims as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents swarm over his oversized form. Falcon orders his allies to fall back and regroup, that they have to get out of here or they are all going down. ‘You are all going down!’ Thor shouts, more lightning bursting from his hammer ready to pour down on Captain America and his allies – until it gets blocked by a force field. An invisible force field.
‘Huh?’ exclaims Daredevil as he and the other anti-registration heroes wonder what is going on. ‘Get out of here! NOW!’ shouts the Invisible Woman, her powers protecting those she has at some point called friends. Patriot asks about their wounded and downed, exclaiming that they cannot leave them behind. Cable is tending to the unconscious Cloak and tells Patriot that he is welcome to stay if it makes him feel better, and ordering everyone else to fall in tight, as they are only going to get one shot at this. ‘Susan. Thank you’ The Falcon remarks, before he, Captain America and the others are all teleported away thanks to Cable and Cloak.
Mr. Fantastic looks at a very angry Thor and exclaims ‘Shut down code “Richard Wagner Eighteen-Thirteen to Eighteen Thirty-Three”’. Thor then stands motionless. ‘What the Hell happened, Reed?’ Yellowjacket shouts furiously. ‘I thought you gave him some kind of directives! You said he’d be just like the old Thor would!’ Mr. Fantastic ignores Pym, and calls out to his wife, telling her that she has got to believe – Susan turns back as she walks away and interrupts her husband, ‘Don’t even speak to me. Don’t say a damn word!’ she exclaims.
Ms. Marvel, Wonder Man, She-Hulk, Tigra, Radioactive Man, Doc Samson, Spider-Man and Iron Man all stand around Goliath’s body, and Spider-Man exclaims ‘I thought you said you knew what you were doing, Tony! I thought we were doing this so no one else got hurt!’
Nearby, the Watcher…watches.
Soon, at Avengers Tower, medical personnel tend to the wound pro-registration-act heroes, while Mr. Fantastic examines “Thor”. Spider-Man, Yellowjacket and his partner Janet Van Dyne a.k.a. the Wasp stand and watch. Peter asks Henry if he is all right, to which Pym replies that he is not okay, for he just watched a new superhuman that he helped create blow a hole through one of his oldest friends. ‘Do you really think I’m so remote – so detached – that this wouldn’t have some kind of impact on me?
Jan turns to Peter and apologizes for Hank’s outburst, but Peter tells Janet that it is okay, and that to be honest everyone is a little freaked out. ‘This isn’t exactly what any of us signed up for’. Wide-eyed, Hank exclaims that he still cannot believe that they cloned a god. He asks Janet and Peter if they knew Tony had been holding onto that strand of Thor’s hair since the first meeting of the Avengers. ‘What kind of a man combs his furniture for hair follicles and skin cells?’ Pym asks. ‘A guy with a lot of foresight, I guess’ Jan replies.
Pym remarks that he cannot understand why their Thor-clone killed a man – ‘Is he missing a conscience?’ Hank asks if they need to fuse him with a Donald Blake, or a Jake Olsen to have him function properly. Peter looks at the emotionless Thor-clone staring back at him, and rather frightened, Spider-Man turns to Yellowjacket and asks him if he ever wonders if they picked the right side.
Meanwhile…at the “Secret Avengers” Headquarters the lovely Dr. Jane Foster and other medical personnel tend to Captain America and the others who have just returned from battle. The heroes who have returned to the “Secret Avengers” headquarters are joined by former Avengers Bonita Juarez a.k.a. the powerful Firebird, Miguel Santos a.k.a. Living Lightning and Triathlon. Monica “Pulsar” Rambeau and the Machine Man, also former Avengers and current members of Nextwave are present, along with the heroic and handsome Kyle Richmond a.k.a. the Defenders’ Nighthawk. Rounding out the new arrivals are former New Warriors (that were not killed in Stamford) Vance “Justice” Astrovik, Silhouette and Debrii.
‘Appeal for amnesty?’ Cap exclaims as Dr. Foster tends to him. ‘Are you insane?’ he asks, pointing out that they just picked up another twenty supporters – and Iron Man’s allies are disappearing by the hour! ‘So what?’ Nighthawk asks, reminding everyone that Goliath is dead and half of their allies have been thrown into this “Number Forty Two” complex, the big S.H.I.E.L.D. penitentiary that Reed Richards was building.
‘And you’re willing to let them get away with that, Kyle?’ Cap asks. Cable comes to Nighthawk’s defense, remarking that the way he sees it, the pro-registration side can do whatever they like now that they have got Thor on their side. Cap informs everyone that it wasn’t Thor, but one of those “Frankenstein’s Monsters” that they have been growing for their super hero army. ‘You really think Thor would have murdered Bill Foster?’
Dagger, and the recovered Cloak, watch on as the Kate Bishop alias the new Hawkeye tells Cap to hold still so she and Jane can finish, when suddenly Nighthawk, Cable and Stature begin to leave the room. Kyle declares that Bill was dead the second he thought he was bigger than the law. Luke Cage suddenly exclaims ‘What you gonna do, Kyle? Pull on those nice little jackboots and smack whoever they tell you to smack? Supper heroes are supposed to be volunteers!’
‘No, we’re supposed to be the good guys, Cage!’ Kyle replies with determination. Kate Bishop turns to Cassie Lang. Cassie looks at her teammate and says that she is sorry, but that she doesn’t want to end up in that super-jail like Wiccan. ‘I want to fight villains – not cops and other super heroes!’ Captain America tells his allies to let the three of them go if their freedom means so little to them, before declaring that it is time they ditched this base for a new one.
Outside, Kyle, Nathan and Cassie are unaware that they are being watched, and Kyle tells Cassie that Captain America is just another old man scared of the future. ‘Won’t be happy until the whole damn team’s dead!’
Later, Goliath’s funeral takes place in New Jersey – where it is raining also. Cranes have lowered Bill Foster’s giant body into an enormous grave. Sheltered by umbrellas, those who have come to pay their respects surround the grave. Happy Hogan remarks to Tony Stark that this is a Hell of s send-off, given the circumstances. Tony reminds his good friend that Goliath was a super hero and saved a lot of lives over the years, which is something that they cannot forget – no matter how bad this gets.
Happy points out that it is a shame no one was able to shrink him down to size, and wonders how much his family had to shell out to pay for the thirty-eight burial plots. Tony replies that Bill’s family didn’t have to pay a thing, he took care of all of that, it was the least he could do….given the circumstances. Happy senses someone approaching them from behind, and seeing who is, he whispers to Stark ‘Heads up, boss!’
Tony turns and sees Miriam Sharpe, one of the super hero registration acts most adamant supporters. Tony greets Miriam, who quickly tells him that she is not here to give him a hard time, as she knows he has lost a lot of support in the super hero community, so she just came by to say her piece: ‘Goliath knew what he was doing. He was breaking a law designed to save people’s lives!’ Miriam points out that if Goliath had gone legitimate then he would still be alive, and tells Tony that this is no more his fault than a cop could be blamed for shooting a punk who pulls a gun on him.
Tony is about to say something else, but Miriam interrupts him again, handing Tony something she wanted to give him – her son Damien’s favorite toy since he was three years old…Tony holds in his hand an Iron Man action figure. ‘Just to remind you why you’re dong this!’ Miriam exclaims. Nearby, Peter Parker stands with his wife, Mary Jane and his loving Aunt May. Susan Storm-Richards and her younger brother Johnny a.k.a. the Human Torch stand together and Reed stands with Doc Samson as he remarks ‘Is it just me or is Peter Parker acting very suspiciously?’
Later…
My darling Reed…
I know Johnny’s out of the hospital and the family’s
back together again. I know I should be happy, but I’m not. I’m so ASHAMED of
you right now, and ashamed of myself for supporting your fascistic plans. I hate
what I’ve become, and that’s what I’m joining Cap’s Secret Avengers team.
Please understand: This is not another cry for attention. This is not me
trying to distract you from your all-important work.
This is because our
hands are soaked in Bill Foster’s BLOOD and you’re so blinded by your graphs and
social projections that you can’t even SEE it.
Johnny and I will be working underground from now on, and that’s obviously no place for Franklin and Valeria. That’s why I’ve left them in your care and beg you to give them the time you have so often denied them in the past.
I also didn’t want your last memory of me to be tainted with all the blazing fights we’ve had in recent weeks – hence the oily-fish dinner (good brain-food), the bottle of your favorite claret (an excellent antioxidant) and making love one final time (good for the immune system).
I hope I don’t look like a coward for leaving this way. I hope you don’t think I’m a bad wife or, worse still, a bad mother. I’m doing this for the best reasons and pray that your genius can resolve this thing before one side ends up slaughtering the other.
I love you, Reed. More than anything in the world.
Please fix
this.
Susan xxx
Susan kisses her children while they sleep. She places the letter on Reed’s beside table, and shields herself from the pouring rain as she takes her suitcases and meets her brother outside by his car. Inside the Baxter Building, a sadden Thing watches his two friends leave.
Later again, at Avengers Tower. Reed, Tony and Jan march past various S.H.I.E.L.D. guards and Tony asks how many of their allies they are losing. ‘More than we can afford’ Reed replies, before adding that a couple of Cap’s people are talking about coming over, but the balance has definitely tipped in the Secret Avengers favor after the tragedy with Goliath. Jan asks if they can bring forward this Fifty State Initiative thing, ‘Wouldn’t these new heroes be able to get things under control again?’ Reed explains that they are still at least a month away from being ready, so they need to move fast and they need people with experience in super human combat.
‘You mean this latest iteration of the Thunderbolt’s you’ve assembled?’ Janet asks. Tony explains that after what went down it is the only course of action left. Reed reminds his allies that the new Thunderbolt’s involvement is strictly temporary, just to capture Captain America’s team, and they will all go back to jail immediately afterwards. Reed adds that each and everyone one of them will be chipped and tagged, and their every movement monitored by microscopic nanobots.
As a door opens revealing the new Thunderbolts to the Wasp, Jan smiles and remarks that they don’t exactly look thrilled about the prospect of teaming up with the Avengers. ‘That’s because they’re not nice people’ Tony remarks as the New Thunderbolts stare back…Venom! Songbird! Taskmaster! Bullseye! Lady Deathstrike! Jack O’Lantern! Jester!

Issue Summary
Dank, dark lair:
Lights fall upon the battered and broken figures of the Vulture and the Grim Reaper, both chained together to a metal column. The beaten and bloody villain Vulture tells the S.H.I.E.L.D. troops before him that the lunatic broke his nose. Aren’t these S.H.I.E.L.D. idiots before him supposed to be hunting him down?
The sergeant of the S.H.I.E.L.D., Unit Five, is contacted by the Hellicarrier and asked if he has found more bad guys. The sergeant confirms and adds that, downstairs, the Trapster is chained to the sink in the men’s room. How many criminals do Vulture and Grim Reaper take him up to? Eight of nine?
S.H.I.E.L.D. Hellicarrier – Six miles above New York City:
Director Maria Hill, sitting in her command center as she receives some
coffee, tells the sergeant that it brings him to fifteen. As she looks at
footage and bio-data on the villains, she explains that he has capture fifteen
super-criminals in seventy-two hours. However, the numbers do not add up. There
is no way that Captain America took down all these criminals, as it is
physically impossible.
“Meaning?” asks the puzzled sergeant. Meaning, states Hill, that this is their nightmare scenario. She doesn’t think he is alone anymore.
Some Time Later:
It takes little time for the nation’s largest
newspapers to spread the news. The Registration Act has passed! The president
promises action against Captain America! Captain America goes into hiding!
Millionaire Tony Stark backs the Super Hero Reform!
At a press conference, Miriam Sharpe, mother of one of the Stamford school children victims, Damien, tells the reporters that she is disappointed in Captain America’s choice in the registration matter, but she couldn’t be happier about Iron Man joining her cause. However, there are still seven days before the Act is law, so Captain America has time to change his mind.
New York City:
A massive Doom Bot lies in ruins on the streets of
New York, surrounded by cheering citizens of the city who applaud their heroes.
Yellowjacket, Mr. Fantastic, She-Hulk, Iron Man and Doc Samson stand over the
fallen monstrosity. Iron Man helps Ms. Marvel out of the wreckage and asks his
teammates if they hear that. That applause is the sound of people trusting super
heroes again. She-Hulk turns to Iron Man, asking if they will technically be
super-heroes after the Registration Act. Won’t they just be S.H.I.E.L.D. agents
when they are on the federal payroll?
No, says Iron Man. They are super heroes. They fight super criminals and save lives. The only thing that changes is that the kids, amateurs, and sociopaths are being weeded out of their ranks. The feline Tigra, leaps upon the Doom Bot to speak to Iron Man, and critically asks him what category Captain America falls into. The others look at Iron Man, who tells Tigra that Captain America is wrong this time. She needs to trust him on that.
Baxter Building:
Night falls over New York City. In the Baxter
Building, the Thing spends time with his godchildren, Franklin and Valeria
Richards.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the building, Reed Richards takes long strides as he busily walks back to his work. His wife, Sue, approaches him and asks him how his project is coming along. Ecstatic, Reed tells Sue that it is a dream. Tony’s big plan for the super hero community is the most exciting thing he has ever worked on. He wasn’t kidding when he said he would revolutionize the super hero community. He hasn’t’ been this excited since the time he first saw a black hole.
As Reed goes back to his work, Sue tells him that she would be excited too if the plan didn’t mean jail time for half their Christmas card list. Agreed, says Reed, not even looking back up. However, the renegade heroes leave them no choice if they refuse to register. If Sue needs to see the social implications the renegades will cause to ease her mind, she should look at the boards to his right.
Sue walks over to the boards where Reed has done many calculations. Confused, at what she is looking at, Sue asks her husband what he means. Reed explains that it is the exponential curve the number of super-beings is following and the apocalypse that will follow if unlicensed activity isn’t brought under control. Tony’ secret plan is amazing for them all. She should just hear what Tony and Hank Pym are talking about. They are like concept machines. He has never seen people that super-charged.
Sue notices a C.D. on Reed’s desk, with the number 42 written on it, and asks what it means. Reed grabs Sue’s wrist as she tries to pick up the disk, telling her that it is classified information.
Oh, right, says Sue, a bit put off by her husband’s secretiveness.
She then changes the subject and supposes she should head off to the hospital anyway. Reed, who is already back at his work, barely gives thought to Sue’s excuse, and simply tells her to give Johnny all his love. Sue then walks away into the shadows, feeling the coldness.
Daily Bugle: BR> Robbie looks at J. Jonah Jameson and tells him that he just received word that Tony Stark is having a huge press conference tomorrow morning. Ben Urich is in, but Peter Parker is out of town. Who should they send in Parker’s place?
Jameson doesn’t reply, so Robertson questioningly calls his name. Jonah apologizes, as he is miles away. He is just thinking about how tonight, at midnight, everything the Bugle has campaigned will officially be law. There will be no more masks or secret identities. The clowns work for S.H.I.E.L.D. or they go to jail. Robbie asks Jameson if he thinks all the heroes will really sign up. As Jameson looks out his window to see Spider-Man swing by, he replies no, he doesn’t think so. Just the smart ones.
Tony Stark’s Penthouse – 11:40 PM:
Tony Stark and Happy Hogan sit
anxiously awaiting midnight. Happy tells Tony that there are only twenty more
minutes to go. He heard from S.H.I.E.L.D. that they are looking at thirty-eight
signatures already. Isn’t that what he predicted? Pretty much, says the worried
Tony. Is there any word from Captain America? Only that he is putting together
his own team, replies Happy. He will see this fight to the finish.
Tony throws his head back and stares at the ceiling, hoping to God that they are doing the right thing.
Midnight:
The lights blazing at Time Square suddenly shift as a
new message appears on the famous giant screens. The Registration Act is law!
24 Hours Later:
The Young Avenger known as Patriot leaps across
rooftops as he tries to evade his attackers. Spotlights shine down on him from
war choppers as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents begin to the hunt for renegade heroes.
Patriot runs as fast as he can, but the toll of the chase begins to wear his
body.
Aboard the chopper, the agent reports to base, stating that an unregistered minor tried to foil a bank robbery in costume. He then identifies the vigilante as Patriot from the Young Avengers. He is currently in pursuit. The agent, Fox-Trot Four, is then given permission by Air Command to use tranquilizers and minimum force. The choppers waste no time in attacking Patriot with projectiles intending to stun the hero.
However, Patriot is unaffected by the attack! Aboard the chopper, the pilot is annoyed to find the target is bullet proof. His colleague then complains about how the info-base was supposed to be updated by people.
Reaching the end of nearby rooftops, Patriot finds that the next closest building is not only too high, but too far away! However, this distance problem is no problem for him, as thanks to his powers he leaps off the rooftop and easily traverses the distance in a single leap. He then crashes through the glass frame of the building across from him.
Inside the building, Patriot tells his teammates in the Young Avengers that they have to get out right now. S.H.I.E.L.D. caught him breaking up a mugging and now they are after him. It seems like these guys are not messing around. However, before Patriot can make a move, the chopper shoots in a canister that dispenses green gas everywhere. Oh boy, says Patriot.
The entire floor of the building then explodes.
Inside the chopper, one agent asks the other if he is sure the kid was indestructible. He’ll be fine, replies the other. Besides, he is more worried about the office block. Command said property damage was to be kept to a minimum or its head-rolling time.
Soon, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents round up and detain Hulkling, Kate Bishop, Stature, Wiccan, Patriot and Vision of the Young Avengers. As they are marched onto an armored truck, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents tell them to look at all the damage done. This is what happens when they try to act like some bad vigilante like Captain America.
Elsewhere:
Daredevil, or perhaps a man dressed like Daredevil,
watches the video of the Young Avengers being detained. He asks Luke Cage if
they should get a group together to free the kids. Cage, however, tells his
companion that Captain America and Falcon are already undercover on the scene.
Cocky Wilson even told him to get the coffee ready.
New York City:
The armored truck, escorted by the NYPD, drives
away. As a blonde man with glasses drives, his companion tells him that this is
what is he talking about. These kids are what…sixteen or seventeen? They are out
in public laughing in regular people’s faces while wearing pantyhose. It isn’t
like they are banning them. No one is stopping them. Heck, they are even
offering to pay these vigilantes. However, these freaks don’t get a buzz off of
being legit. They like the feeling of being in a mask. That is how they get off.
They will need one cold shower when they see the pen the Registration side is
building for them. Has the other man heard of that place? Number Forty-Two?
Frank in Supplies told him that they aren’t even allowed to look at the blueprints without special goggles. The agent’s companion, annoyed, speaks up and says that he should tell him something. He talks too much!
The undercover Captain America then knocks the other man out of the speeding vehicle!
The man crashes into the road, causing the police cruisers to swerve out of the way and flip over and crash themselves!
In the back of the truck, another S.H.I.E.L.D. agent reveals himself as an undercover Falcon, who breaks Wiccan free and tells him that he needs him to use one of his teleportation spells now. Yes, says a nervous Wiccan.
Outside, S.H.I.E.L.D. calls all units in the area of the George Washington Bridge and tells them that they suspect a hijacking of a S.H.I.E.L.D. bus. A roadblock is quickly set up as cruisers stop on the bridge and a helicopter drops a barricade.
Cap calls back to Falcon that cops are already blocking the road. Annoyed, Falcon tells Wiccan to hurry up with the “freakin’ spell.” Wiccan concentrates hardly as he chants that he wants to be somewhere else.
Outside, S.H.I.E.L.D. realizes that the hijackers will kill themselves. They order the cops to fall back, but to keep up the barricade. Suddenly, magical energies manifest around the armored bus as Wiccan’s powers kick in. Right as the bus is about to crash into the barricade and officers; it vanishes, leaving behind only residual energy.
Elsewhere:
In a secret complex, somewhere, the bus rematerializes
and comes to a screeching halt. The sudden stop throws all its occupants around.
The Young Avengers regroup as the back of the truck opens and they step out.
Oh, my God, says Stature as she looks around. Where are they? P>
Congratulations, children, says the enigmatic Cable, you just joined the
Resistance. Daredevil helps the Young Avengers out as they look around the
massive complex to see Goliath, Hercules, Cloak, Luke Cage, Night Nurse and Dr.
Jane Foster!
As Captain America frees Stature, she asks him what this place is. Cap explains that it is a S.H.I.E.L.D. safe house, number twenty-three. It is one of twenty-eight such safe houses and only known to a thirty-third degree S.H.I.E.L.D. officer. How many thirty-third degree officers are there, asks Hulking as Daredevil unlocks his bindings.
Just Nick Fury, replies Captain America. Daredevil explains that Fury is underground now and can only be contacted via scrambler-phone. However, he said they could use this place for as long as they need. He is already working on their new secret identifications.
Why do they need new identifications, asks Patriot. Cable smiles and tells the naïve hero that their old ones are compromised. They are going to need somewhere to hide when they aren’t kicking butt and taking names. Captain America takes off his glasses and tells the heroes that they are living here for the duration of the crisis. Iron Man’s crew is planning something huge and they have to fight back from here.
Suddenly, Dagger calls from a nearby computer screen, which shows an image of Tony Stark’s press conference, and tells everyone that they should see this.
Washington, D.C.:
Tony Stark stands before a large group of
reporters and tells them that he does not have to introduce Miriam Sharpe. She,
if they recall, lost her son in the Stamford tragedy, which kick-started his
passion for the federal employment of all super-heroes.
Xavier Institute:
Cyclops, Emma Frost, Beast, and Colossus of the
X-Men watch the news conference eagerly; just as Wolverine comes in, wishing to
know what the fuss is about.
Washington, D.C.:
Tony Stark then motions to his left as
Spider-Man, in his regular red and blue uniform, swings into stage. Tony is sure
Spider-Man needs no introduction.
New York City:
Sue Richards sits at the bed of the battered Johnny
Storm. She watches the television and mutters that she hopes Tony knows what he
is doing.
Washington, D.C.:
Spider-Man takes the podium and tells the
reporters that, as they know, he has guarded his secret identity well over the
years. It was only after a long talk with his wife and his family that he
decided to take the following step. The Registration Act gives heroes a choice.
They can follow Captain America’s trend with heroes completely unchecked, or
they can go legitimate and earn back a part of the public’s trust.
Elsewhere:
Wasp, Thing, She-Hulk, and Yellowjacket watch the
conference from their headquarters, as Aunt May and Mary Jane watch from
Avengers Tower. At the Daily Bugle, Miss Grant tries speaking to Jameson as he
watches the conference, but he stops her and tells her that if she even thinks
about asking him what he wants for breakfast, she is fired.
Washington, D.C.:
Spider-Man tells the reporters that he doesn’t
wear a mask because he is ashamed of what he does. He is proud of who he is and
right now he is going to prove it.
“My name is Peter Parker, and I’ve been Spider-Man sine I was fifteen years old,” says Spider-Man, as he takes off his mask and reveals his face to the entire world.
Daily Bugle:
Miss Grant, Robbie, and several other Bugle employees
rush to Jameson’s side as he collapses behind his desk.
Washington, D.C.:
“Any questions?” says the smiling Peter as he
faces the world, mask in hand.
Washington D.C.:
“Soak it up, Peter,” says Tony Stark as he puts his
arm on the unmasked Spider-Man’s shoulder, “You’re bigger than Elvis now.”
The photographers snap away and the reporters rush up to the stage to ask Peter Parker their shock-inspired questions.
Wakanda:
Rain falls on the nation of Wakanda. Standing on the
outskirts of his city, the King T’Challa asks Reed Richards if he really
unmasked Spider-Man on television. No, says Reed, as the rain soaks his hair.
Parker volunteered, because Iron Man explained the gravity of the situation.
Confidence in super-humans is at an all-time low. Stark’s plan for a new
beginning is the only thing the heroes have left.
A super police force that covers all fifty states, asks the perplexed Black Panther. They want him to come to the United States and help hunt down any super heroes who disagree with it? T’Challa declines the request. Wakanda does not like it when America interferes with their affairs, so he can only assume that the feeling will be reciprocated. Actually, says Reed, the president requested Black Panther’s support personally. T’Challa tells Reed that he is afraid the president will be disappointed. Now, how is Johnny Storm? Is the Human Torch recovering well?
Reed admits that he hasn’t checked up on Johnny in a day or two, but Sue has barely left his bedside. If anything was wrong, Reed is sure he would have heard. Reed then looks around at the beautiful landscape around him and comments that he loves it out here. He loves the high-tech jungle. It is so eerie standing among the trees without birds and insects. Reed always meant to ask, does the eco-system adapt itself or does the Panther manipulate if artificially?
“Word of advice, Reed,” says T’Challa, “Call Susan.”
Meanwhile:
The newspapers don’t miss a beat. Captain America’s
“Secret Avengers” make the front page as they end a new Sinister Six plot.
Greenwich Village:
At the home of the mystic, Dr. Strange,
Yellowjacket and Wasp wait in the foyer of the arcane building. Wong, Strange’s
manservant, stands at the bottom of the winding steps to the top level, blocking
the two access. He tells the heroes that he is sorry, but the master would not
consider supporting Tony Stark’s plans. In fact, Strange has gone in seclusion
in his arctic lodge in the hope that he might resolve the differences between
the pro-side and anti-side by fasting for forty nights. Yellowjacket tells Wong
that Strange knows where to find him if he changes his mind. Wasp looks down at
her watch and, in annoyance, says that it seems her watch always stops when she
is in this stupid house.
Meanwhile:
Tony Stark’s promise to stop the Super-Rebels makes the
front cover of papers, though reporters wonder how many heroes are on Stark’s
new team.
Xavier Institute:
On the grounds of the school, Emma Frost sits
with Tony Stark, dressed in a spiffy white suit and black shirt, with a book in
her lap. Tony pours a glass of lemonade for him and Miss Frost, and flirts with
her. He thinks this is the first time he and her have been alone since
Marrakech. Does Cyclops know about that little arrangement he and her used to
have when neither of them was dating? Cyclops knows everything, replies Emma
coolly. Since Scott cannot hide anything from her telepathic mind, it is only
fair that she shares everything and keeps no secrets from him.
“My,” says Stark, “You really have changed.”
As children run by, playing soccer, and a Sentinel stands guard, Tony tells Emma that she must know why he is there. Is there any point in verbalizing anymore? Not especially, replies Emma. The X-Men had a meeting last night and decided that helping Tony hunt down these anti-registration rebels would be a violation of everything the X-Men believe in.
Even with ninety percent public backing, asks Tony. Even with her boyfriend so keen on getting in the good favor of the White House again?
Emma retorts back that perhaps the X-Men know how it feels to be persecuted, while Tony fights the good fight. Tony tells Emma to ask the moms and dads in Stamford if they think Captain America is still fighting the good fight. A bit offended, Emma asks Tony if he really is going to blackmail her with genocide. Does he want to compare notes?
Emma then casts a telepathic illusion of the ruins of Genosha, littered with charred skeletal remains of sixteen million mutants. Where were the Avengers when Genosha died, Iron Man, asks Emma. “Where were you when our babies were burning?”
Tony gets up and tells Emma that he though she was supposed to be looking out for the best interest of her students. Is it really wise to put them on a collision course with the American government?
Emma tells Tony that she doesn’t want a fight. The X-Men are perfectly happy to remain on this little reservation the government has made for them. All the X-Men ask is that they are left alone and in return, the team won’t join forces with Tony’s star-spangled friend. Your choice, Mister Stark, says Emma.
Tony leaves the mansion grounds to his limo at the front gate. Happy Hogan waits for him and asks if the X-Men are joining their side. Afraid not, replies Tony. However, they are not joining Captain America either, which means the pro-side still has a huge advantage in terms of actual numbers. Tony thinks they should go ahead with the containment as planned. He wants the anti-side neutralized before he goes public with the Fifty-State Initiative.
Suddenly, a voice from the bushes calls out to Iron Man. Bishop emerges from the shadows and asks Tony if he can speak to him.
Elsewhere:
Four men sit at a booth at a restaurant. Captain
America, with brown hair and a mustache, introduces himself as Brett Hendrick.
He is a security supervisor at a shopping mall in Queens. Next to him, Hercules,
who now wears clothes and glasses, introduces himself as Victor Tegler. He is an
I.T. consultant for a major international finance corporation. Daredevil, with
glasses, a vest, and red hair, introduces himself as Cooper Peyton. He is an
engineer from Long Island.
Goliath, however, sits in a suit with glasses and looks down at his card. What kind of name is Rockwell Dodsworth, asks Bill. And how the hell does he end up as a community outreach worker. He told Fury he wanted to be something cool, like an actor or racecar driver. Does Cap think Fury could get him another identity?
No, says Cap to Goliath. They have to take what Fury offers them. Besides, the secret I.D. is just a place for them to go to ground when they aren’t doing important stuff. Daredevil tells his teammates that he is getting used to this secret identity stuff. He is trying to come up with new favorite foods, movies and bands. What about Spider-Man, Goliath asks. Do they think Tony Stark really talked him into taking off his mask like that?
Daredevil tells Goliath that it is a great move, strategically. No one has guarded his real name more than Spider-Man. It sends a powerful message for all the costumes still riding the fence. Hercules notices that Cap is quiet, and asks him if he is ok. Cap tells the group that he is thinking about an appointment he had ten minutes ago with a kid from the “Make a Wish Foundation.” He told the kid he’d play baseball in his backyard with him for a while, but he is sure the backyard is crawling with Cape-Killers. It is the little things that the pro-side has stolen from them with this registration garbage. It’s the little things that make them who they are.
Suddenly, a device in Goliath’s pocket rings. He checks the call and discovers that a petrochemical plant is on fire over by the Hudson. Base says that three or four hundred people trapped inside. Cloak and Dagger are coming to teleport them down. Cap gets up and gives the waitress her money, telling her to keep the change.
The four rush into the nearby alley and take off their clothes to reveal their uniforms underneath. Goliath thinks about the emergency distress calls and the idea of sneaking into an ally to change into costume – he hates to say it, but he is starting to enjoy this.
New York Presbyterian Hospital:
A doctor and a nurse converse at
the nurse’s station. The doctor tells the nurse that she doesn’t think it is
cool that Captain America’s side is still fighting crime. What she thinks would
be cool is if Cap stopped breaking the law. The nurse tells Darlene that she is
sure the people in that hijacked plane are grateful that Cap’s Secret Avengers
are still around.
Suddenly, another doctor is shocked to see the injured Johnny Storm walking on crutches down the hall. She tells Storm that he can’t be out of bed. He has to sleep. The weary Johnny asks the women if anyone has seen his sister.
Geffen-Meyer Chemicals:
Cloak and Dagger teleport in the Secret
Avengers team to the burning chemical factory. As the heroes look around, Cap
asks how many workers did the report say were trapped. Three or four hundred,
replies their ally, Cable. However, something is wrong. He is getting nothing
over his info-net in terms of panic signals. Suddenly, Cable stops talking.
What’s wrong, asks Luke Cage.
Cable looks down at the rubble and sees a sign for Geffen-Meyer Chemicals – a division of Stark Industries.
An alarmed Cable calls out to his allies that it is a trap. They need to get out of there!
Suddenly, a barrage of darts hits into the backs of Cloak and Wiccan, knocking both men out.
“Of course it was a trap,” says Iron Man, “How else were we going to get you all in one place?”
The Secret Avengers turn to see Iron Man, the three remaining members of the Fantastic Four, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Doc Samson, the Thunderbolts, Yellowjacket, Wasp, Wonder Man, Tigra, Black Widow and Spider-Man.
Hulkling checks on the unconscious Wiccan and demands to know what has happened to him and Cloak. Spider-Man tells the kid that it is just a tranquilizer to make sure no one is teleported away. He then contacts Sky-bird One and asks if they have the anti-side in their sights.
Above in helicopters, snipers are prepared and have the heroes in their sight. They are ready when Spider-Man is.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Hellicarrier:
Director Hill calls all airborne agents
and tells them that they are only there in a support capacity. They should hold
their fire and await further orders.
Geffen-Meyer Chemicals:
Iron Man approaches Captain America, who
asks Tony if his paymasters are going soft. Iron Man tells Cap that he hasn’t
come to arrest them. He talked S.H.I.E.L.D. into offering final amnesty. You
mean a surrender, asks Cap. Thanks, says Cap, but he’d rather take his chances.
Spider-Man speaks up and tells the “big man” that the only people who win when heroes are fighting each other are the bad guys. This goes against every principle Cap believed in. Angry, Cap snaps back and tells Spider-Man not to talk to him about principles. He saw that little stunt he played on television. Is Mary Jane happy about the Sandman having her zip code now?
Iron Man lifts up his faceplate and tells Cap that he knows he is angry since this is an enormous change from the way they used to work, but they aren’t living in 1945 anymore. The public doesn’t want masks and secret identities. They want to feel safe when heroes are around and there is no other way to win back the public’s respect. Cap has known Tony for half his adult life. He knows Tony wouldn’t back this up unless he believed in it with all his heart. They don’t want to fight Cap. He just needs to give Tony a chance to explain his twenty-first century overhaul.
Iron Man extends his hand and Cap looks at it. He then looks up at the choppers in the sky, and then grasps Tony’s hand, telling him that he has five minutes. Five minutes is all I need, says Iron Man. Invisible Woman and Mach-IV smile at each other, and Spider-Man is glad that “wing-tips” agreed to listen. Didn’t Spider-Man tell them all that this would work out?
Iron Man and Captain America end their handshake and Tony notices something on his hand: it is a small device.
Suddenly, Tony’s armor goes on the fritz and he screams in pain. Captain America punches him and tells him that it is an electron-scrambler developed by Nick Fury’s tech team in case Iron Man ever went over to the other side. Cap then bashes Tony with his shield and tells him that he shouldn’t have attacked Wiccan and Cloak.
Goliath grows to massive proportions the ground underneath the pro-side, sending Wonder Man and Radioactive Man flying. Yellowjacket grows to match Goliath’s size, but Wasp asks him to not do it. He doesn’t have to grow to take down Goliath.
A battle rages, however Stature grows and kicks the taller Atlas in the face. Ms. Marvel goes after Luke Cage, and Cable spars with Radioactive Man. Hercules battles Wonder Man. Yellowjacket puts Goliath in a headlock and tells the man that he thought he was supposed to be smart.
Director Hill calls the sky support and reminds them not to get involved. “Codename Lightning” is up next. They should wait and hold fire until Iron Man gives the go-ahead.
Below, Thing punches Hulkling, telling him he doesn’t want to fight. Why can’t these guys do as told? Behind the two, Spider-Man takes on Patriot.
Cap throws his shield at Spider-Man, who swiftly dodges it. He tells Cap to be careful, as he can take an eye out with that thing, like these poor guys. Spider-Man than catches the shield with his mechanical arms and uses it to hit away Daredevil and Vision.
Spider-Man then waves bye as he literally disappears. Confused, Patriot asks where Spider-Man went. Cap explains that Spider-Man is wearing a new suit designed by Stark. It is bulletproof, can glide, and has a stealth-mode.
Not to mention that “butt-kicking” button, says Spider-Man as he reappears in front of Cap and bashes him with his own shield.
Nearby, the motionless Iron Man tells his suit to reroute power systems and reboot. The suit complies, and Iron Man is back online. He immediately flies towards Cap. Capt punches Spider-Man away, but does not notice Iron Man. Doc Samson has Hercules in a headlock, but Hercules sees Iron Man heading towards Cap and warns his leader.
It is too late. Iron Man slams Cap through a concrete wall. The tattered Cap, however, gets up and tries to attack Iron Man, but Tony tells him that he is wasting his time. He punches Cap in the face and tells him that his armor has recorded Cap’s every punch. It knows what move Cap will make next.
Iron Man then hits Cap with a dangerous punch, sending blood, sweat and costume into the air.
Enraged, Hercules throws Samson away and tells the filthy traitors to get away. Iron Man is killing Captain America! With ease, he pummels She-Hulk and Spider-Man away and tells Captain America that he is coming.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Hellicarrier:
An agent tells Director Hill that five
hundred more Cape-Killers are surrounding the perimeter. They are awaiting
orders. Hill tells the man to put the Cape Killers on standby. “Codename
Lightning” has first pass at this.
Geffen-Meyer Chemicals:
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning crashes down
and blasts Hercules off the ground and into the air. Hawkeye, Luke Cage and
Cloak stop dead in their tracks in confusion, but a barrage of lighting bolts
blasts them too.
Cable and Daredevil look up into the sky. “My god…” says Daredevil.
Up above, Thor stands triumphant, wielding Mjolnir.
Overview
A conflict has been brewing in the Marvel Universe for over a year, threatening to pit friend against friend, brother against brother--and all it will take is a single misstep to cost thousands their lives and ignite the fuse! As the war claims its first victims, no one is safe as teams, friendships, and families begin to fall apart. Civil War, a Marvel Comics event in seven parts, stars Spider-Man, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and the entirety of the Marvel pantheon! Civil War – the cross-over that rewrites the rules - begins here in this double-sized first issue!
Control Room, WTNH-Channel 8:
While observing the New Warriors on his television screens in a studio, a producer asks Speedball how many villains they are dealing with. Responding via camera, Speedball at first believes that he’s seeing three villains. However, on that moment, Coldheart comes out of her hiding place emptying the trash. That marks four villains in total, and they are all on the FBI’s most wanted list.
The producer confirms that Cobalt Man, Coldheart, Speedfreek and Nitro all broke out of Ryker’s prison three months ago, and all of them have records that go as long as a person’s arm. He mentions that Coldheart fought Spider-Man a couple of times, and Speedfreek –surprisingly enough – almost took down the Hulk! Speedball, however, finds that hard to believe.
Nearby, Microbe starts to sweat, fearing that these villains might be out of their league. He thinks they shouldn’t go into their house. Speedball reminds Microbe about the strong ratings this show will get. This could be the best episode of the entire second season! He reminds Microbe that, for six months now, they have been driving around the Midwest looking for goofballs like these villains to fight, and the best thing they’ve managed to find so far was a bum with a spray can and a wooden leg. This could be the episode that really puts the New Warriors on the map. If they manage to beat these villains, Speedball believes that people are going to stop whining about Nova leaving their team so he could go back into outer space.
When Namorita wants to hear about the plan, Speedball smiles it is for Namorita to spend five more minutes in the makeup chair or else people will see that big, ugly zit on her chin. While Namorita does that, Night Trasher keeps watching the house with his binoculars. Suddenly, he spots that they have been spotted by Coldheart, who quickly runs into her house and warns her comrades about the danger, and to get into their suits. Fast behind, the New Warriors all quickly jump through the house’s window and start the battle.
Speedball quickly takes on Nitro, and jokes about the rather lousy way the villain dresses as he punches the guy in the face. A cameraman warns Speedball he didn’t get his joke on tape well, and asks if he can say it again. Speedball does, and kicks Nitro into his face.
While she’s facing Night Thrasher and Namorita, Coldheart mentions she recognizes them. She has seen the New Warrior’s reality show, and she refuses to be taken in by losers like them. Namorita punches Coldheart into her face, and Night Thrasher kicks her. Microbe manages to get his bacterial beasties to rust Cobalt Man out, and he tells the others that somebody should really take care of Nitro, as he’s an old enemy of Captain Marvel.
Meanwhile Namorita quickly takes to the air, and sees that Nitro was trying to escape. However, she dives at him and pushes Nitro face first into a school bus, which is parked at the side of an elementary school, filled with children. She orders Nitro to get back up onto his feet, and not to try and use some of his stupid explosions, because that’s only going to make her hit him harder. Seemingly subdued, Nitro recognizes Namorita, because she is the cousin of the Sub-Mariner. He sarcastically smiles, and mentions that they aren’t the losers the New Warriors are used to battling. No, they are playing with the big boys now.
As he speaks, Nitro’s eyes start to glow, followed by an immense explosion, which encompasses the whole city block and everything inside it!
Sometime later…
In the rubble of the neighborhood, the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and other heroes help the firemen clear search for survivors and recover the bodies of the dead. In the middle of the devastation, Iron Man informs Cap that he heard the police got a lead on Nitro, and that the word on the street is that the villain sneaked out of town in the back of a pickup truck. A grim Cap doesn’t think it matters. He mourns about all these children that died in the explosion. The FEMA Chief told him that there could be eight or nine hundred casualties. And they all died because of some stupid reality show.
Iron Man thinks that the New Warriors should have called in their help, and that Speedball should have realized these villains were out of their league. The whole country saw the tape where Speedball said they were trying to improve the show’s ratings.
A fireman calls out to Marvel Girl and Cyclops to come over, because they need some help. Their motion detectors are picking up something twenty feet down below a lot of big rocks, but they don’t have any diggers around. Rachel is ready for it, and the firemen quickly realize they better move out of the way. She telekinetically lifts up tons of rubble, and the firemen find a surviving family, who hid in their cellar. The firemen report to their teammates that they’ve found six more survivors over by the school’s north side, and they need blankets and a defibrillator to take care of the survivors’ wounds.
As the family is led out, Wolverine looks at the Sentinels, which are standing motionless, simply surveying the X-Men. The family’s youngest child, a little boy sees the towering Sentinels and gets scared. However, his mother tells her son not to be scared, because the Sentinels are only their to keep an eye out on the X-Men. They’re the good guys. Still eying the Sentinel, Wolverine angrily shouts at the pilots that they are still following them around, even though they volunteered to help out on this federal emergency. The pilot inside the Sentinel smirks that they are just doing their jobs.
Goliath doesn’t think that this time it’s just mutants the Sentinels are watching. He tells Ms. Marvel that this is the straw that broke the camel’s back, mark his words. Carol isn’t sure about that, but Goliath is confident he’s speaking the truth. After Philly getting bombed, the Hulk trashing Las Vegas… Wolverine saying he was gonna kill the president – this is the start of the witch hunts. He truly believes that people will start coming after them with torches and pitchforks. Carol replies that maybe this time the people might be right. Still sifting through the rubble, Goliath doesn’t know how anyone can justify this.
In the following days…
Appearing on Larry King Live, She-Hulk explains to Larry that a ban on super-heroes is impossible, seeing that over a thousand super-villains live in the world of today. But she does think it’s reasonable when the heroes get the proper training and get required to wear a badge.
At a memorial service for the casualties of Stamford, a priest states that he hopes they can ask the Lord for mercy. Not for the children who perished, but for the super-people whose carelessness caused this tragedy. After the service, as Tony Stark exits the church, a woman calls out his name. To everyone’s surprise, when he turns to her, she spits into his face, calling him a filthy piece of crap. A body guards tries to push the woman back, telling her they’re going to ask her to leave. In tears, she shouts that she won’t be dragged away from her own son’s funeral, and she believes it’s Stark who should be dragged away.
Tony understands that the woman is upset, but defends that the carelessness of the New Warriors had nothing to do with him. The woman disagrees with that. She reminds Stark that he’s the one financing the Avengers, and that he’s been telling kids for years now that they can live outside the law if they’re wearing tights. She shouts that cops have to train and wear badges, and she believes Stark finds that to be too boring. She believes that, with him being a billionaire and having a badass attitude, he can have himself some super-powers and start up a private super-gang.
The guard calls for someone to get the woman out of there. However, she takes off on her own, crying that Stark began this mess with his dirty billions, and that the blood of her dead Damien is on his hands now. In the watching crowd, Jameson smilingly holds his arms around his photographer, Peter Parker, hoping aloud that he’s getting all this.
On another news show, a man claims that he doesn’t want to speak ill of the dead, but says that Speedball was a boy who, by all accounts, couldn’t even name the current president of the United States. He believes that, even though these super-powers may be awesome, they should be tested before they are allowed to act openly in the community.
A night later, things start to turn ugly…
Johnny Storm lands in the city at a nightclub, to meet up with his beautiful date. He apologizes for being late, claiming that he had to stop along the way because he had to rescue some kids out of a burning orphanage. The girl smiles, not knowing if Johnny is telling the truth or trying to get her not to be mad at him for being late. Johnny jokes back that he’s telling the truth, if she swaps “orphans” with “babes” and “burning orphanage” with “signing autographs.”
They walk to the front of the club’s line together and Johnny greets the bouncer, his old friend Chico, and asks the guy how it’s going. Chico informs Johnny that Paris and Lindsay are waiting for him upstairs, and that all the other girls couldn’t believe him when he told them Johnny would be stopping by.
The other people notice how Johnny cut into the line, while they have to wait to get in. When they begin to complain, Johnny smiles to the people that the next time they save the planet from an attacking Galactus, they can borrow his free pass. The people wonder what Johnny is going to do the next time he blows up a school, or when he goes off to kill some kids. Johnny can’t believe his ears. An angry man thinks Johnny has some nerve swaggering around town the way he does, after what happened. If he were him, the man says, he would have been ashamed to come out.
Johnny angrily defends that he’s got nothing to do with Speedball or the New Warriors. Those guys were C-list super-heroes to begin with, tops. Growing even angrier, the crowd start calling names at Johnny, and his date wants to get out of here. Suddenly, someone smashes a bottle on Johnny’s head, and he collapses, unconscious! The crowd begins to riot, and literally starts beating Johnny up!
Not much later, the event is reported on the news channels. One reporter claims that more attacks on several super-heroes have taken place. In related news, the president has been put under pressure and people from Stamford want to know what his proposals are for super-hero reform.
Later, at the Baxter Building…
As the sun sets, a group of heroes have gathered at the Fantastic Four’s headquarters. Dr. Strange asks Reed what they are saying: will he be forced to become a federal employee or face a warrant for his arrest? Reed replies that, actually, Strange is one of the few post-humans the government is hoping to seek a compromise with.
Nearby, speaking to Cage, the Wasp asks about pension plans and annual vacation times. It’s ridiculous. What are they trying to do? Turn them info civil servants? Cage rather believes that the government is looking to close them down. Listening in, Iron Man defends that the government might be just trying to make them more legitimate. He wonders why shouldn’t they be better trained and publicly accountable? Joining in, Patriot recalls that somebody told him they should go on strike if they mess with heroes like this. He proposes the question to the others, wondering if anyone else thinks a strike is a good solution. Reed honestly doesn’t think that someone could seriously advocate a super-hero strike.
Having enough, Cyclops wants to know what the general consensus is. Tony explains that, for as far as he is concerned, Stamford was their wake up call. He thinks that this is what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity. He thinks that becoming public employees makes perfect sense if it helps people to sleep a little easier.
Falcon can’t believe he’s hearing this. He defends that the masks are a tradition. They can’t just let people turn them into super-cops. Yellowjacket thinks that they are lucky that people have tolerated them for as long as they have. Why should they be allowed to hide behind masks? Chiming in, Wolverine explains to Hank that they should wear masks because the world isn’t so nice outside his ivory tower. The Thing agrees with Logan, thinking that Johnny wouldn’t have ended up in the hospital last night if idiots like Hank weren’t trying to give them a bad name.
Having been hanging upside down and out of sight, Spider-Man makes his presence known, much to the surprise of the Black Cat. To Ben’s statement, he asks “who knows?” However, he does think that, if people are trying to force everybody to work for Uncle Sam, a whole lot of people might just hang up their tights. To this, Sue replies that she doesn’t think that having a secret identity is such a big thing. After all, the Fantastic Four have been public since the very beginning, and that has never been a serious concern to them. Spider-Man rejoins that won’t – not until they day he comes home and finds his wife impaled on an octopus arm and the woman who raised him begging for her life. Nighthawk wonders if anyone else thinks they are just being paranoid here. After all, he adds, this is all just speculation at the moment. Daredevil, standing at the back of the room, disagrees with that statement. He believes that this has been building up for quite some time, and that Stamford was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. This is the end of the way they do business. He can smell it in the air.
The SHIELD Helicarrier, six miles above New York…
Captain America meets up with Commander Hill, who is flanked by two SHIELD officers. Hill explains to Cap that she’s been told that twenty-three friends of Cap’s are meeting at the Baxter Building right now, discussing how the super-people should respond to the president’s big solution. Maria wants to know from Cap if he thinks his friends are going to go for it.
When Cap replies that he doesn’t think that’s for him to judge, Hill replies that she doesn’t want to hear about any of that nonsense. She knows that she and Cap are never going to be as tight as Cap was with Nick Fury, but she is currently still the acting head of SHIELD. She demands that Cap at least respects her badge, if he doesn’t want to respect her.
Cap believes that this plan will split the heroes in the middle, and that the president is going to make the heroes get into a war with themselves. One of the flanking agents wants to know what’s wrong with the super-heroes, and how anyone can argue with super-heroes being properly trained and paid for a living. The second agent asks Cap how many heroes will rebel against this. Cap believes a lot. When Hill wants to know if there will be any majors, Cap says he expects a few people, but mostly heroes who work close to the streets, like Daredevil and Luke Cage.
To this, Hill states, more than asking, that there will be no one he can’t handle. Taken aback at the implication of her question, Cap begs her pardon. He heard, she replies.
Continuing, she explains that the proposal goes to vote into a two weeks’ time and could be law in as little as a month. But they can’t go in half-cooked. She reveals that they are already developing an anti-superhuman response unit at SHIELD, but they need to make sure that the Avengers are on their side and that Cap is leading the group.
Cap tells Hill that she can forget about that. She is asking him to arrest people who risk their lives for America every day of the week. Hill defends that she’s only asking Cap to obey the will of the American people. Cap shouts at Hill not to play politics with him. He believes that super-heroes need to stay above that stuff or Washington starts telling them who the super-villains are. Maria thought that super-villains were people who wear masks and don’t obey the law.
On that moment, lots of SHIELD agents step compartments in the walls. They aim their rifles at Cap and cock their weapons. Cap wants to know if this is the hit squad Hill has been training to take down the heroes. Hill defends that nobody wants a war. The people are just sick of living in the Wild West. Cap defends that masked heroes have been part of this country for as long as anyone can remember. Hill jokes that one can also say that about smallpox, and tells Cap not to act like an idiot. Nobody is saying that he can’t do his job. It’s just time that Cap became legitimate like they are.
Cap orders the soldiers to lower their weapons, but Hill orders them to stand their ground. Captain America is not in command there. Cap orders the soldiers his request again, or else he won’t be responsible for what happens next. To this, Hill warns her men to keep the tranquilizers ready. Cap replies that this is insane. Completely insane! Cap then damns Hill to hell for this, but she then returns the sentiment, damning Cap to hell for making her do it…
By the time Hill gives the order for the tranquilizers, Cap has already launched himself at the soldiers. Grabbing one agent, Cap uses him as a human shield, before going on the offensive. He propels his shield at one soldier, knocking him out, even as he delivers a blow to another’s mid-section. The shield then ricochets and slices through two rifle barrels, while Cap delivers an open-fist blow to another’s face. The Avenger even has time to deliver an elbow to another soldier before the shield ricochets against another and returns to his hand. One of the SHIELD officers attempt to rally the rest of the troops, but Cap simply plows through the soldiers and jumps through the helcarrier’s window and into the open sky below.
Calling on her radio, Hill orders all units to stop Captain America. Soldiers all over the helicarrier open fire with live rounds, but Cap – even in freefall – easily deflects them with his shield.
An approaching jet fighter, designated War-Hawk One by the radio tower, is given clearance to land. The pilot “Roger”s base-command and then asks about the situation with ground crew. Before he can get an answer, Captain America land on the fighter’s cockpit and anchors himself with his shield, which he uses to break through the canopy. When the pilot swears aloud at this, Cap instructs him to just keep flying – and to watch that potty mouth!
Rather than descending into the hangar bay, the pilot continues through for the exit. The ground crew calls for the exit door to be closed but there’s no time, and the jet clears the exit, with Captain America riding it like a surfboard into the night sky.
Watching Cap escape, Hill calls him an idiot. They’re trying to save lives.
Meanwhile, at the Baxter Building…
Interrupting their discussion, Spider-Woman asks if she’s the only one who can see a big, dome-headed guy staring at everybody. Dr. Strange introduces Jessica to the Watcher, and explains to her that he only appears to record moments of great change and enormous upheaval. Uatu’s presence there now, Strange concludes, doesn’t bode well.
Washington, DC…
An angry mob protests against the super-heroes in front of the White House, and demand justice for Damien, one of the boys who got killed in the explosion. One news pundit tells the other analysts that the fact that the Congress has responded so swiftly just proves what an effective political operator Miriam Sharpe has become. She and the other Stamford reformist have really tapped into America’s quiet discomfort with superhuman misbehavior there. Meanwhile, at the gate of the White House, Miriam Sharpe, mother of Damien, hold a framed picture of her boy, as she stares within.
Inside the White House Cabinet Room, one Cabinet official tells the others of how Captain America landed the jet he stole in a football field - before taking the pilot for a hamburger and fries. He thinks that’s just like Captain America; making sure a two-billion dollar warplane doesn’t get damaged, no matter the danger he is in.
Speaking sarcastically, the president tells his Cabinet secretary that he’s glad he thinks it’s funny. Because he got the impression that the registration plan was controversial enough. He also believes that Cap going underground means that every super-hero who disagrees with their proposal now has a figurehead.
In response, Iron Man replies that this means the other heroes should find a leader of their own. When the president wants to know what Stark is proposing, Stark replies that he can continue pushing his registration just like he planned it. Flanked by Mister Fantastic and Yellowjacket, Iron Man assures the president that he can leave Captain America them.

New York City: ‘Easy sis, I got you!’ exclaims Johnny Storm a.k.a. the Human Torch, formerly of the Fantastic Four as he swoops down in a burst of flames and grabs his sister, Susan Storm-Richards a.k.a. the powerful Invisible Woman, also formerly of the Fantastic Four, rescuing her from a group of S.H.I.E.L.D agents. One of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents radios to another squad, informing them that the Invisible Woman is being aided by the Human Torch. The agents take flight as they are ordered to stay in pursuit. But in the air, Johnny tells Sue to make them invisible, so she does.
In the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Director, Maria Hill, remarks that, it has to be said - flooding the streets with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents has made an enormous impact on criminal activity, and adds that if their agents keep this up, there might not be any need for those New Thunderbolts. An officer announces to the agents following the renegade former Fantastic Four members that Hill wants a sit-rep on them, and asks the agents if they have nailed them yet. One of the agents replies that they need another two minutes, and announces that they are switching to infra-red.
Meanwhile, at Stark Tower, long-time friend and colleague of Tony Stark, Happy Hogan meets with Kyle Richmond a.k.a. Nighthawk of the Defenders and Cassie Lang a.k.a. Stature of the Young Avengers, who until recently were allied with Captain America’s Secret Avengers team, and tells them how grateful he is that they are joining the Pro-Registration side. Happy adds that he knows it couldn’t have been easy for them, walking away from Captain America just like that.
The handsome Nighthawk tells Happy that it was probably the toughest decision he has ever had to make. Happy assures Nighthawk that he knows what he means. ‘Your head says “Tony Stark” but you heart wants things just the way they’ve always been’. Kyle tells Happy that, unfortunately, they are living in a different world now, and he supposes that it took Goliath to make him realize that.
Happy turns to Cassie and asks her if she is ready to just walk away from her teammates in the Young Avengers, pointing out that this is a big step she is taking here. Cassie remarks that people want heroes to be properly trained now, and points out that it is not the nineteen-forties anymore. ‘All I want is to do my job to the best of my abilities’. Happy tells Cassie that is great, before informing them that he will get them downstairs in a second or two for background checks, but that Tony Stark had said he wanted to welcome them both personally. ‘It’s not like the big guy to keep people waiting…’ Happy remarks looking at his watch.
Upstairs in Stark Towers, Tony “Iron Man” Stark, one of the front-runners for the Pro-Registration of super beings tells his teammate from the Avengers Peter “Spider-Man” Parker that he is acting like a lunatic, and suggests they sit down and discuss this like grown ups. Spider-Man replies by telling Tony that there is nothing to discuss. ‘I’m leaving the Avengers!’ Peter explains to Tony that he doesn’t have a problem working for S.H.I.E.L.D., but as for locking heroes in the Negative Zone, the Thor-clone killing Bill Foster, that he does have a problem with. ‘You’re in over your head!’ Peter exclaims.
Iron Man asks Spider-Man what he is talking about, pointing out that “Thor” acted like a police officer would have. ‘Don’t forget that Bill Foster was a friend of mine!’ Tony remarks, asking Peter if he really thinks they are going to let something like that happen again. He then asks Spider-Man what he thinks they should do with the unregistered super-beings - ‘Lock them up with regular prisoners?’ He assures Peter that this is only a temporary measure, but if they lock them up in Rykers, then they will be out in five minutes.
Tony tells Peter that he has to appreciate that there are forces within the government and S.H.I.E.L.D. who like nothing more than to outlaw all super humans. ’Get out of my way!’ is all Spider-Man replies, to which Tony tells him not to be a fool, and asks him if he really thinks he can just go back to his old life now that everyone knows who he really is. ‘This isn’t just about you anymore! What about May? What about Mary Jane?’ Tony asks, referring to Peter’s beloved aunt and wife. Peter responds by smashing Tony through the next wall
, then declaring that his aunt and Mary Jane are as far away as possible. Tony tells Peter that he is disappointed in him, and fires a repulsor beam at him. Peter easily dodges thanks to his enhanced agility, and replies ‘Not as disappointed as I am in myself!’ as he leaps towards a window, ready to smash his way through it - except that he just smashes against it, and falls to the ground. ‘Avengers Headquarters. Reinforced glass’ Iron Man remarks. At that moment, several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents rush into the room, telling Stark to stand back, that they have Spider-Man, and being firing dozens of bullets at him - except the bullets shatter the glass, and Peter forces himself out the high-rise window, ‘Stop! Hold your fire!’ Iron Man orders the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, except it’s too late. ‘Dammit!’ he exclaims angrily.
From the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Maria Hill radios in to Tony, telling him that she just got word Spider-Man has gone rogue, and orders Tony to remain in the area and wait for back up, as she is pulling every agent on the ground. Tony tells Maria to wait, that he just needs to talk to Spider-Man, but he can barely get the words out as Maria snaps back ‘Request denied, Star! Over and out!’
The Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. then radios to the Thunderbolts division, declaring that she wants fourteen operatives activated on a sixty minute trial. She remarks that she knows they were saving them for the final battle, but that the situation is critical. A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent stands in the Thunderbolts division, where waiting ready to go are fourteen of the Thunderbolts Army - Songbird, Atlas, Radioactive Man, Joystick, Venom, Bullseye, Lady Deathstrike, Taskmaster, Jack O-Lantern, Jester, Ox, Vector, Ironclad and X-Ray, the latter three being members of the U-Foes also.
‘I knew we couldn’t trust that guy!’ Maria snaps, referring to Spider-Man, who at that very moment is running through a sewer. An officer reports that they have Spider-Man’s location, between Third and Fourth Street, adding that word from the street says only minimum force will be required.
Suddenly, a little toy skates along the water in front of Peter. ‘What the -?’ Peter exclaims before the toy blows up, sending him crashing back in the sewer. The Jester stands over Spider-Man, asking him how it feels to be on the wrong side of the law and for the Jester to be wearing a sheriff’s badge? Jack O’Lantern flies over Spider-Man on a flight-device, as he tosses some gas down towards Spider-Man, and exclaims ‘Man. You gotta see who we’re hanging out with now, Petey. Jester and me, we’re finally on the A-List!’
‘Oh, baby! This is just too awesome for words!’ Jester shouts as he tosses a yo-yo at Peter, which explodes as it smacks into Peter’s chest. ‘You want fries with that, honey?’ Jester asks he smashes Peter to the side of the sewer. Jack O’Lantern bares down over Spider-Man, grabbing him by the neck the third-rate villain exclaims that this seemed like such a bum deal at first, working for S.H.I.E.L.D., forced to do what they say. ‘But when word from the top says “kick the crap outta Spider-Man” Well, what can we do? We’re only obeying orders, right?’
Jack O’Lantern forces Peter up against the wall of the sewer as Pete, badly wounded, replies that he just wanted to do the right thing, before asking the villains if they know his girlfriend died of a broken neck. The villains ignore Pete’s comment, and Jack O’Lantern suggests they have some fun with him while he is still stoned from the gas-bomb. But someone from S.H.I.E.L.D. radios to the villains, telling them that if they lay a finger on Spider-Man they will get five thousand volts. ‘You really think we’re gonna let you freaks run around without a leash?’ the agents asks, before telling them that S.H.I.E.L.D. support is on its way, so they just need to cuff Spider-Man and sit tight.
‘Spoilsport’ mumbles Jester, when suddenly, two bullets are fired, one smashes Jack O’Lantern’s pumpkin-head open, and the other hits Jester in the side of his head. ‘What the Hell? we’ve lost visual!’ the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents remark. Spider-Man cowers, thinking he is in trouble, until he realizes that he knows this mysterious rescuer. ‘I know you, skull-face guy…I know you from way back, don’t I?’
Meanwhile, on the 32nd Street, S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicles race past an alley, where a woman and a man, both with black hair, are standing The woman asks her companion if he thinks they saw them. ‘Even if they did, what’s there to see? We’re not the Human Torch and the Invisible Woman anymore - we’re Mr and Mrs Landau and we’re out for a midnight stroll!’ Johnny replies to Susan.
Approaching a door, Susan remarks that she is still annoyed that Fury couldn’t find them any brother and sister identities. ‘Pretending we’re a couple is the creepiest thing I’ve ever done!’ Johnny asks Susan how she thinks he feels. ‘You look like my last date’s grandmother!’ before remarking that their disguises let them get out there to help people, which is what is important.
The heroic siblings enter a large meeting room, where Captain America and his “Secret Avengers” are all sitting. Black Mamba, currently of Bad Girls Inc and formerly of the Serpent Society, goes to the door and tells everyone to take it easy, as it is Johnny and Sue back from a mission. Luke Cage asks the Storms’ if they heard what happened to Cloak and Dagger. ‘No. What happened?’ Johnny asks. Captain America informs them that Tandy and Tyrone got busted over atQueens, which means their Baxter Building raid needs to be revised, as he was counting on Cloak for his teleportation abilities.
The badly injured Cap slams a fist down on the table, ‘Damn S.H.I.E.L.D. units!’ he exclaims, remarking that they have lost a man for every one they have gained over these past few days. Hulkling of the Young Avengers suggests that he could raid the Fantastic Four’s files, shape-shifting into one of their staff and waltzing through security with no problems. Cap informs Hulkling that he has a bigger job for him in Arizona, before announcing that the Invisible Woman already has an equally pressing assignment.
The usually quiet Bonita Juarez, better known as the uber-powerful Firebird asks Captain America what could be bigger than stealing the plans for the Negative Zone Prison? ‘We get in there and free our people, and this starts looking like a fair fight again!’ the former Avenger exclaims. ‘Why the Hell does he call it Number Forty-Two anyway?’ Rachel Leighton a.k.a. Diamondback asks. ‘Knowing Tony Stark it will have something to do with his mother’ Sue replies.
Suddenly, the door opens, and Frank Castle a.k.a. the Punisher stands there, holding a bloody Spider-Man, the anti-hero shouts ‘Get me a medic! NOW!’ Sam Wilson a.k.a. the Falcon is shocked to see the Punisher, while Captain America calls out to Dr. Jane Foster and Linda “Night Nurse” Carter. Punisher carries Spider-Man over to the med-room, and Jane asks what happened to him. Punisher replies that Spider-Man has multiple fractures and has sustained serious blood loss thanks to Tony Stark and his buddies, adding that Peter seems to have ingested some kind of hallucinogen at the same time.
Several of the other heroes enter the med-lab also, and Ultra Girl exclaims ‘Iron Man? I thought Spidey was so far up his butt you couldn’t see his feet anymore’. ‘Yeah, well, he’s on our side now!’ Punisher exclaims, to which the Falcon asks the Punisher what he means by that. ‘Since when were you on this team?’. ‘Since the other guys started enlisting known thieves and multiple killers!’ Castle replies. Monica Rambeau a.k.a. Pulsar of Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. and formerly the Avenger known as Photon asks if she is the only one laughing her guts out at the irony of this.
Punisher asks who they think has been running around in a ski mask these past few weeks, covering their backs. ‘Way I see it, you people need all the help you can get!’ the Human Torch asks why they don’t just call up Hannibal Lecter and ask if he is available too. ‘Because Hannibal Lecter hasn’t got the black ops training to get you into the Baxter Building!’ the Punisher replies. Dr. Walter Newell a.k.a. Stingray, a former member of the Avengers exclaims ‘Please tell me we aren’t so far gone that we’re signing up the Punisher!’
Luke Cage tells Cap that this is his call, and asks if they hand Punisher over to the cops or do they hear out what he has to say. Cap just tells Cage to be quiet, as he is thinking. In an adjacent room though, Greer Grant Nelson a.k.a. Tigra sits in the shadows, listening to her former friends and teammates, while she records their conversations for the Pro-Registration team!
Meanwhile, in Hell’s Kitchen, Danny Rand a.k.a. the new Daredevil is led away by several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and Reed Richards a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic, and Jennifer Walters a.k.a. the She-Hulk, a renowned lawyer, and former member of the Fantastic Four stand as the former Iron Fist is led away. Reed remarks that this is horrible. ‘The public’s behind us, the government’s behind us. Crime is at an all-time low. Why are our own people the only ones causing problems?’ Reed asks.
Regretfully, Mr. Fantastic remarks that sometimes he wishes they’d never got involved. ‘Do you ever stop to think how much easier things would be if we hadn’t spliced Thor’s DNA with Hank Pym’s cyber-tech?’ he asks. ‘If we didn’t have this big final battle planned with all those Thunderbolts lunatics? Hank wouldn’t be doped up on anti-depressants and my darling Sue would never have left’.
‘Maybe not’ Jennifer tells Reed, before pointing out that that public opinion would have forced S.H.I.E.L.D. to bring down every super hero in America. ‘People were sick of sixteen year old kids blowing up buildings, Reed. You guys gave us all a future!’ Jennifer tells her friend, trying to comfort him.
Meanwhile, in Ryker’s Island Penitentiary, flanked by agents, Tony Stark leads Daredevil to the dimensional portal to take him to Number Forty-Two. Stark tells Rand that he has to understand why they are doing this. ‘We don’t take any pleasure in hunting down our friends!’ Tony assures him. Tony explains that they are backing these reforms because the only other option is a complete ban on all super heroes, and nobody wants that to happen.
The group walk through the gateway and enter the Negative Zone as Tony explains that their big idea is to have fifty super teams spread over all fifty states, each one licensed and accountable to the taxpayer. ‘It’s the next step in super human evolution: a federal force from coast to coast!’ Tony reveals to Rand that he has been working on this for months, creating new super heroes and revamping anyone who wants to join. He assures Daredevil that he would be at the top of their list if he was interested, and could even have his own team.
Motioning around to the sprawling Number Forty-Two complex, Tony remarks ‘Nobody wants to put you in jail’, before asking Daredevil if they can talk. One of the agents tells Stark that Daredevil has barely said a word since they brought him in, but that they did find this silver dollar under his tongue. ’He said he’s been saving it for you’ another agent reveals as he hands the dollar to Stark, who replies ’A silver dollar? I don’t understand’.
‘Guess that’s thirty-one pieces of silver you’ve got now, huh?’ Daredevil remarks sternly before being led away, leaving a perplexed Stark behind. ‘Sleep well, Judas’ Daredevil calls back.
SHIELD base, Arizona. `Can we still call him Hercules when there’s already a Hercules out there?’ Director of SHIELD, Maria Hill asks Dr. Hank “Yellowjacket” Pym as they watch a large man lift up a huge tank high above his head, while a woman clad in red and black darts about with a bow and arrow and another man in some kind of armor flies above them carrying a large hammer. Hank Pym tells Director Hill that, fortunately, Greek Gods aren’t especially litigious, and adds that all the Goliaths over the years never bothered him.
Maria examines her clipboard and remarks to Hank that the Avengers in New York and these Champions here in California give the Initiative a nice sense of balance. Hank informs Maria that it was actually Tony Stark’s idea, adding that Tony also came up with the idea of making Aphrodite a former super model. Hank then asks Maria to stand clear of the track, and just in time too, as Hermes races past them. Maria asks what kind of speed Hermes is hitting now, to which Hank replies that Hermes can go at Mach-1 if he hasn’t eaten, but that they will have him at Mach-3 by the time they go public.
Maria remarks that with the Champions here in California, the Mormon heroes in Utah, and the Space Knights heading for Chicago, who did they have for Iowa? ‘Are you sending those Force Works people over there?’ Hank replies that they are pending back ground checks and the local authorities giving their absolute approval. ‘The public need super-people they can count on. We do this right or not at all!’
A SHIELD agent approaches Hank and informs him that there is a problem with Poseidon. ‘I think one of the guys fed him the wrong stuff and he’s turned a funny color! Could you come take a look?’ Hank replies that it isn’t a problem and excuses himself from Maria. The SHIELD agent gives Maria a funny look, and as usual the sour woman just scowls.
Meanwhile, at the Baxter Building, Reed Richards, otherwise known as Mr. Fantastic is doing some “surgery” on the Thor-Cyborg. Iron Man radios in and asks his colleague how the reprogramming is coming along, and if he has found out what the problem is yet. Reed replies that it is a little late for Bill Foster, but the blockers in the cyborg’s head should stop him killing anyone when they go for the big push. Reed asks Tony what the situation is on the ground, as he has been in surgery for thirty-six hours straight.
Iron Man replies that it is just like Reed predicted on the probability map - crime figures haven’t been this good since Eisenhower was in office! ‘Can you imagine how boring it’s going to be once the new heroes are up and running?’ Tony asks, to which Reed replies that boring is good - especially if it means little kids aren’t getting buildings pushed on top of them.
Iron Man asks Reed how his call with the President went, to which Reed replies that he read the President the riot act and told him that he would not play a part in their big finale unless he had absolute guarantee that Susan and Johnny would not face arrest. ‘What did he say?’ Iron Man asks. Reed replies that he would give them twelve immunities, but that everyone else would be open for prosecution. ‘Leave the rest to me. I’m seeing him for dinner anyway’ Tony reveals.
On the outside exterior of the Baxter Building, Frank Castle, a.k.a. the anti-hero known as the Punisher climbs up the building and uses a communicator to talk to Captain America, informing him that he has just passed level thirty-eight and none of the alarms have registered yet. ‘Only two more stories and we’re in there!’ Cap warns the Punisher to be careful, pointing out that if he even brushes up against one of those blue spheres then the whole system will attack him as an invading organism. Cap adds that the Invisible Woman told him Reed based their security on the human immune system this time around.
Frank tells Cap to relax, as nothing can read him while he is wearing the dampers, and he is invisible to all cameras and trip-beams. Cap asks Castle where he managed to lay his hands on this kind of hardware anyway, to which Frank replies that Tony Stark’s warehouse manager should invest in bigger locks. Frank then kicks a panel in and informs Captain America that he is in the Fantastic Four’s data-house.
From his own safe-house, Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America tells Castle that he needs everything he can find on the “Number 42” complex, the super prison where they are holding the rest of the resistance in the Neutral Zone. Cap explains that he needs the size, how much space they will have to move around and how many access points have been built. ‘Think you can handle that without shooting somebody in the head?’ ‘Hilarious’ Frank mumbles in reply.
Suddenly, ‘Uh-oh’ Frank utters. ‘What’s up?’ Cap replies quickly. Frank reveals that the compound has got more protection than anything he has ever seen. ‘You’re gonna need a lot more than your team of grunts to spring these guys!’ Cap replies that he is on it, and tells Castle to just keep on typing.
Meanwhile in Atlantis, Susan Storm-Richards a.k.a. the Invisible Woman, formerly of the Fantastic Four, stands before the ruler of Atlantis, Namor, a man with whom she has a complicated past. Susan thanks Namor for seeing him on such short notice, adding that she knows his court prefers to follow royal protocols, but that they have not got much time. Susan informs Namor that the Secret Avengers’ raid is planed for tonight and everyone else has turned them down. ‘Having you on side could mean the difference between winning and losing’ she tells him.
‘Your majesty’. Namor snarls bluntly. ‘What?’ Susan replies. ‘I believe that’s the correct term when you’re addressing a foreign dignitary, Mrs. Richards’ Namor tells her. Susan tells Namor not to play games, as this is the gravest crisis they have ever faced. ‘They’ve issued a superhuman draft and they’re imprisoning people who don’t comply! Can you believe they’re actually recruiting super-villains to bring us in?’
The Sub-Mariner rises from his throne and tells Susan that she talks like it matters. ‘Power struggles on your little mound are as meaningless to me as the tides are to you’ he tells her, before declaring that the death of his cousin Namorita was all that mattered in this debacle, and her assailant has been dealt with privately. Susan is shocked and reminds Namor that Captain America is one of his oldest friends, that he has known him longer than anyone.
‘And where is this friend now? Trying to make deals with the X-Men or Stephen Strange while he sends you here with your puppy-dog eyes?’ Namor snaps back, before telling Susan to inform Cap that he has no interest in helping a man who would take advantage of their unique relationship. ‘What are you talking about? We don’t have a relationship’ Susan replies. Namor stands close to Susan now and puts a finger on the breathing apparatus which covers her mouth as he informs her that he can feel her heartbeat through the water…’And it tells a very different story from the lies upon your lips…’.
Later, at the Secret Avengers headquarters. Among the gathered renegade heroes are current Avengers Captain America, Jessica “Spider-Woman” Drew and Luke Cage. Former Avengers Firebird, Hercules, Stingray, Spider-Man, Falcon, Living Lightning and Tigra. The Invisible Woman and her brother the Human Torch, also formerly of the Fantastic Four. Pulsar and Machine Man from Nextwave, Patriot, Kate Bishop and the Vision of the Young Avengers, the Punisher and Diamondback.
Captain America asks his good friend Sam “the Falcon” Wilson what kind of numbers they are looking at. Sam replies that Namor is saying no, and Wolverine will not break ranks with the X-Men, while Doctor Strange is still out of reach. However, on the plus side, the Black Panther was very upset about the whole Bill Foster thing, so T’Challa gave him his assurance that both he and Storm have their backs.
Luke Cage turns to Spider-Man and asks him how he is doing. Peter Parker replies that he is not too shabby, and while he is still a little woozy from Jack O’Lantern’s gas bomb, he is psyched to be back in his old costume. Cage puts an arm around his friend’s shoulders and exclaims that it gives him a good feeling too, like things are finally getting back to normal. ‘Jeez, you two wanna get a room?’ the Punisher asks. ‘Ooh! What’s up, honey? You jealous?’ Spider-Man replies.
Shortly, the heroes gather in the meeting room and Cap tells them that it is time to get down to business. He reveals that the Punisher got them the plans on the Negative Zone prison and the lay out of the sprawling complex appears before them in a three-dimensional schematic. At that moment, Greer Grant Nelson a.k.a. Tigra hides her face behind her hair, while Cap informs those who don’t know what the Negative Zone was originally for - high-risk super-villains, but now, as they know, rebel super heroes are being held their too.
The Falcon announces that Iron Man, Yellowjacket and Mr. Fantastic are planning puppet heroes in every state, and fifty portals leading directly from their local pens into this huge collective super prison. Sam adds that, so far, only two of the doorways have been finished, and they have obtained the codes for the one on Ryker’s island.
Captain America declares that they need to move fast, as their Intel suggests that Tony and the others are planning a huge assault tonight with SHIELD and the Thunderbolts Army, so tonight is their absolute last opportunity. Cap turns to Spider-Man and tells him that he knows he is not in the best shape right now, and assures him that no one is going to judge him if he decides to sit this one out. Peter replies that there is not a chance, as he needs to do something to make up for all the bad moves he has made lately, and adds that with numbers being the way they are, he thinks they will need every extra pair of hands.
Suddenly, Rachel Leighton a.k.a. Diamondback, stands up and exclaims that numbers might actually be a little better than they anticipated. ‘Goldbug? Plunderer? You want to come out and tell everyone what we discussed?’ she calls out. The d-grade villains step out of another room while Captain America asks his off-again-on-again girlfriend what is going on here. Goldbug tells the heroes that they aren’t the only ones scared that they are heading for a police state. ‘The super-criminal community’s more concerned about Stark’s plan than anyone!’
Plunderer, the brother of Ka-Zar, informs the heroes that they just came by to let them know that the two of them are here if they need them, after all, it’s only fair that if Iron Man has villains on his side, so can Captain America. Suddenly, the Punisher guns both of the villains down. ‘What?’ he asks innocently as the rest of the Secret Avengers look at him. ‘You murderous piece of trash!’ Captain America shouts as he punches the Punisher in the face.
Castle points out that Plunderer and Goldbug were bad guys - thieves and killers. Cap kicks Frank in the face, ordering him to shut up, before smashing his shield down on the anti-hero, who just lays there. ‘Fight, you coward!’ Cap shouts. Bloodied and bruised, the Punisher wearily replies ‘Not against you’. Cap raises a fist - but doesn’t bring it down. Instead he exclaims ‘Get him out of here! And throw his guns in the incinerator!’ Steve walks away mumbling that he must have been out of his mind to give an animal like the Punisher a place on this team.
Monica “Pulsar” Rambeau remarks that the Punisher lasted about ten minutes more than she expected. Bonita “Firebird” Juarez and Patriot look at Spider-Man and Patriot wonders why the Punisher wouldn’t hit Cap. Spider-Man tells him that it is probably because Cap is the reason the Punisher went to Vietnam. ‘Same guy, different war!’ Cap overhears this and turns to his comrades. ‘Wrong. Frank Castle is insane!’ he declares.
Meanwhile, in Stamford, Connecticut. Tony and Reed meet with Miriam Sharpe, one of the front-runners of the Super Human Registration Act. Tony motions to a nearby statue and tells Miriam that he hopes she likes the gardens they built in the children’s honor. Miriam tells Tony that the gardens are beautiful, that it is so nice to have a place where they can come and sit, whenever they are feeling lonely.
Miriam tells Tony and Reed that she really wants to thank them for all this - not just for the money, but for all the work they have done to push her big idea. Miriam claims that she hates how much it has cost them personally, and that she would never have asked them if she had known their lives would get torn apart like this. Tony assures Miriam that they knew what they were getting themselves into, and remarks that there is no shame in making enemies if it means making people safer.
Elsewhere, in Dr. Strange’s sanctuary at the North Pole. Uatu the Watcher stands on the edge of Stephen Strange’s pentagram and asks him how long it has been since he has eaten. The Sorcerer Supreme replies that he has had just a little water since the Civil War began. Uatu asks Strange if he isn’t tempted to simply end this, what with his great power he could stop this quarrel with a gesture or whisper.
Dr. Strange replies that is exactly why he must remain above the fray, for there is no right or wrong in this debate, but it is simply a matter of perspective, adding that it is not his place to influence the evolution of the superhuman role. Uatu replies that, as a Watcher, he is more than familiar with such dilemmas. Uatu asks Strange to tell him why he is fasting if he favor’s no side - ‘What outcome are you meditating for?’ Strange replies ‘Whichever victory is best for all mankind, my friend…and spills the least amount of blood tonight!’
Sunset at Ryker’s Island Penitentiary. Security personnel guard the portal to the Negative Zone’s “Number 42” complex. Suddenly, the find themselves punched over by unseen assailants. The unseen assailants are suddenly revealed as the Invisible Woman releases them from an invisible touch. Captain America turns to the Black Panther, who is present along with his wife Storm, former leader of the X-Men, and asks him what the situation with security is. The Black Panther replies that security has been neutralized from top to bottom, though he would hate to think how long it would have taken if they didn’t have Reed’s blueprints.
Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Hercules, the Human Torch, Tigra, Luke Cage, the Falcon and Young Avengers Kate Bishop, Patriot and the Vision round out Cap’s squad, and the Falcon thanks the Black Panther for coming, adding that they know it is in Wakanda’s best interest to stay neutral. T’Challa tells his former teammate to forget about it, and remarks that their friend Goliath would still be alive if he and Storm had taken a stand when they were first asked.
Suddenly, Spider-Man stops in his tracks. Cap asks him what is wrong and Peter replies that his Spider-Sense is going off the scale. ‘Seriously, this is Defcon One!’
‘I’m not surprised’ bellows Captain America as he appears before the Secret Avengers, flanked by a squad of his own consisting of Yellowjacket, Wasp, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow, She-Hulk, Sentry, and Wonder Man, all at some time in their super hero lives members of the Avengers. The Defender Kyle Richmond a.k.a. Nighthawk and Cassie “Stature” Lang, both formerly of Cap’s Secret Avengers. Mr. Fantastic, Doc Samson, Sabra, Arana and Bishop are amongst the group, as are several members of the Thunderbolts Army: Songbird, Mach-IV, Venom, Radioactive Man, Lady Deathstrike, Blizzard, Taskmaster, Bullseye and the Fixer.
Iron Man tells Cap and the Secret Avengers that they have just walked into another trap: ‘Earth’s mightiest heroes, plus Earth’s mightiest villains’. Iron Man reveals to Cap that they have had a mole in the Secret Avengers for over a week, and points out that they are outnumbered ten to one. ‘Would now be a good time to talk about a surrender?’
‘I don’t think so’ Cap replies, before telling his former friend that if he referring to Tigra as the mole, then they already knew about her. ‘What?’ Tigra exclaims. Cap then announces that Iron Man isn’t the only one with a spy on his team. Iron Man exclaims that is impossible, as the only people who knew about Tigra were himself, Hank and Reed.
Suddenly, ‘I’m sorry, Tony’ Hank exclaims as he removes his Yellowjacket mask. ‘Hank? What are you doing? You believed in this more than any of us…! Iron Man exclaims in shock. However, things take a surprising turn as Hank’s form shifts, revealing that of the Young Avenger Hulkling. Hulkling reveals that Doctor Pym is drugged and unconscious ever since he knocked him out an replaced him back in Arizona this morning. Hulkling then introduces himself for those that do not know him.
‘Oh dear God!’ Mr. Fantastic exclaims, before pointing out that if Hulkling could mimic Hank’s voice and retinal pattern, then he has had full authority to do whatever they can. ‘The cells!’ exclaims Iron Man as Captain America motions to where a group of costumed people are racing towards them. ‘I believe this evens the odds a little!’ Indeed, now allied with Cap and the Secret Avengers are several other heroes, some of whom were members of the Secret Avengers until they were captured: Cloak and Dagger, Danny “Daredevil” Rand, Wiccan, Battlestar, Prodigy, The Living Mummy, Shroud, Solo, Typeface, Network, Lectronn, Lightbright, Black Crow, Gladitrix and Coldblood-7.
‘Now close your eyes, gentlemen…this might hurt!’ Captain America snarls.

CIVIL WAR TIE-IN!
“THE WAR AT HOME”
With Civil War in full-throttle mode, Spider-Man follows his conscience... and fast becomes a lightning rod for controversy. Unmasked and vunerable, this is Spider-Man as you've NEVER seen him!
As soon as Iron Man overhears that Peter will no longer support the Registration Act, he attacks him and a battle ensues. Now on the run, Peter, Mary Jane, and Aunt May must find a new place to live. Spider-Man decides to publicly announce his opposition to the Act and goes on live television. Iron Man decides that Spider-Man needs to be brought down.
Spider-Man gets word from Captain America and his Secret Avengers that they want him to join their side after his recent announcement on television that he stands against the Registration Act. Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, is visited in prison by his attorney that they have been given the location of Spider-Man plus two (Mary Jane and Aunt May) in a motel. Fisk soon declares that he wishes a "bonus" to be delivered. As Spider-Man plans their next move with Cap and others, an assassin has Mary Jane and Aunt May in the sights of a sniper rifle.
The comic starts with Iron-Man giving an after-battle pep talk to his Pro Super-human Registration Act (SHRA) SHIELD operatives. He has no qualms calling the fight bloody, as it was, but he reminds everyone it was necessary to sustain the roll of Super-humans in society.
Tony Stark draws his speech to a close, but he tells everyone they will be transporting the captive Super-humans to a more suitable holding zone, and that they would obviously get some interference from the rebels. Tony draws Spider-Man aside, noting he's been very quiet, and asks why. A conflicted Peter Parker brushes off the question, saying talking won't transport the prisoners, and the two get going.
As Spider-Man crouches ready to pounce on top of one of the convoys, he draws in the crowd, half protesting, half supporting. He tunes the frequency of his new suit, picking up both Police and Fire CB radio. Iron Man then remarks that Spider-Man is very useful for his ability to know danger before it has presented itself (via his Spider-Sense). Spider-Man draws in, as he realizes that his new suit that Iron Man made for him must observe him and his powers, as Peter never revealed his Spider-Sense.
Peter Parker's train of thought is interrupted, as he starts to sense a vague danger ahead of them, and underground. Tony takes immediate action, moving the convoy onto a backup route. The secondary route is blocked by protesters, so now the convoy is speeding down a third route. As the convoy is barreling down Yancy street (an adamant anti-SHRA neighborhood), Parker's Spider-Sense acts up, and a white noise seems to appear as minor dangers (people throwing rocks, tomatoes, etc) sets in. But out of the white noise, comes a very pronounced danger -- missiles.
The missiles are destroyed, but the anti-SHRA rebel heroes spring forth, ambushing the convoy. A huge battle ensues, and Spider-Man is picked by Captain America. The fight is intense, Spider-Man steadily losing ground, until he webs down Captain America's shield, only to be immediately bludgeoned. Spider-Man draws back, putting some distance between the two. His webs are ineffective, the Captain easily avoiding them. Spider-Man dives in, letting his new suit's extra pincer arms come out, and they successfully slash at Captain America's face. The two wait, a silence takes over, but it is soon devastated by a distant boom, where the main battle is taking place.
Spider-Man looks back, to see Captain America gone. Dumbfounded, he just stands for a while, before a few teenagers run over, and try to peel away Spider-Man's web to get to Captain America's shield. Spider-Man scares them away, then webs the shield to a wall, a few stories up, saying that nobody should touch that shield, nobody but the Captain.
Mary Jane Watson wakes up to find a conflicted Peter Parker watching the news regarding the Super-human Registration act. The news report goes on, saying that both the Fantastic Four and Stark Enterprises have and will make billions of dollars off of security regarding.
Peter travels over to Stark towers to find a tired Stark working away at a computer. Peter interrupts Stark, asking if he could see the Negative Zone, the holding area for super-humans.
Peter is alarmed to find out that the holding area is the Negative zone, and the inhumanity of the prison alarms him. People are confined to small cubic cells that combat the super-human's powers, from being fire resistant to emitting counter-frequency.
As Tony finishes up the tour of the holding area, Peter begrudgingly remarks that it's barely satisfactory, -- for a temporary holding area. Tony replies, "This isn't temporary. This isn't interim. This is permanent. Get with the program."
Peter is aghast that these people are stuck in the Negative Zone for life simply because they refuse to sign the Super-human Registration Act. Tony draws a parallel to putting an atomic bomb on parole, and that extremes had to be implemented in order to contain the type of people they were dealing with. Iron Man is also quick to bring up that the Negative Zone is outside the jurisdiction of any country or any agency found on Earth, so the prisoners were denied the right to a trial.
As the two leave the gateway to the Negative Zone, Peter sees Reed Richards and asks to talk to him in private (away from Iron-Man). Iron Man leaves (although it is revealed in a different comic, he overhears the entire conversation), and Peter asks why Reed is siding with the SHRA. Reed recalls the story of his uncle, who was essentially condemned of being a communist (which he wasn't) simply because he stood out. Reed says that the loss of his uncle devastated him, and Reed couldn't bear to cause that sort of devastation to those he held close to him.
Iron-Man picks up Peter, and the two start making it to the airport. Iron-Man says Peter needs to go to Los Angeles, to cool off, saying Peter had become to involved in the SHRA, and they needed him in LA.
On the next page, Peter sneaks back into his house and quietly wakes up both Aunt May, and Mary Jane. He tells the two that they need to leave, saying he's made a terrible mistake which he has to rectify, and they can't be around.
Distant 'booms' rattle the building, and Peter tells the two to hurry. He quickly let's his suit materialize and starts to run away from both the booming and his family.
Iron-Man crashes through the wall, dive tackling Spider-Man. Spider-Man sarcastically remarks, "I thought you said you were going out for the night, Dad"
To which Iron Man replies, "And I thought you knew which side you were on"
Mary Jane and Aunt May are still in the sights of the sniper. It appears that they are the secondary targets. Peter calls MJ as he is about to go off on what may be the final battle.
The world watches as heroes fight against heroes. Even in Ryker's Island prison, Wilson Fisk listens and keeps in touch with his sniper. His orders are, if Spider-Man survives, he is to be killed when he returns to the motel. If he dies in battle, then he wants MJ and Aunt May killed.
The battle is over. Now is time to pick up the pieces. Peter returns to the motel. The sniper is alerted. Peter's spider-senses begin to go off but he cannot pinpoint the danger. As the trigger is pulled, he grabs Mary Jane and dives for the floor. Unfortunately, there is a victim to the gunshot...
We open with a shot of the Winter Soldier climbing a building with the story title and chapter making up one whole side of the building...very Jim Steranko-ish.(!!)This building is in fact a S.H.I.E.L.D. safe house and Winter Soldier has broken in. Once securely in he confronts a L.M.D. of Nick Fury (still in deep hiding) and after a brief fight with it, shuts it down. W.S. then boots up a holographic, "real-time" Nick Fury, who talks him through a reprogram of this L.M.D. so it will be Fury's eyes and ears from now on.(We are led to believe that Bucky is in the know on Fury's whereabouts. But is he the only one who knows?)W.S. has now left, undetected, and we see him fool a "cape-killer" team into believing that an image of Wolverine is really Wolverine. This allows W.S. to ambush this team and steal the tachnology of this teams power suits for Fury. Meanwhile, the Red Skull is seen in Latveria in the presence of one Doctor Doom !! Just what are they up to?...........
Agent 13 is in the office of the S.H.I.E.L.D. psychiatrist in New York, for a psych evaluation. We see, through flashback from Agent 13, the recent events from "Civil War" that have led to Captain America going 'underground". Sharon(Agent 13) tries to talk Steve (Cap) into turning himself in. They talk after a ..serious.. romantic interlude, and during this talk, we see that Sharon has led the strike team meant to capture Cap, to a different location, thus NOT betraying Steve. Close with the S.H.I.E.L.D. psychiatrist meeting the Red Skull in a cemetary!!! We find that the good Dr. is in fact one of Cap's old enemies...Dr. Faustus...in deep disguise !!! The plot thickens....

Iron Man and Ms. Marvel appear at Luke Cage and Jessica Jones' household to inform them that if they don't sign the Superhuman Registration Act they will become fugitives at midnight. After a significant argument in which Cage compares the act to slavery, Ms. Marvel and Iron Man are eventually convinced to leave.
Cage convinces Jessica to flee with their newborn child to Toronto, Canada, where there is no registration act.
Not long following her departure, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents show at Cage's house to apprehend him for disobeying the mandate for all super humans to register. Cage manages to fight his way to the street, where others in the neighborhood begin throwing debris at the soldiers. Cage is hit from the blast of one of the agents' weapons, but is saved when Captain America, The Falcon, and Iron Fist (dressed as the Daredevil while Matt Murdock is imprisoned) show up to help him escape. The issue ends with Jessica Jones in Canada hearing a news report that Cage has escaped with the aid of Captain America and the others.

Civil War tie in
The Punisher. Captain America. Uneasy allies in even the best of times, now two fugitives fighting a common enemy in CIVIL WAR. Every war is won or lost based on one decisive battle-- this might be the endgame for CIVIL WAR. A clash that's been building for thirty years comes to a ferocious head as The Punisher and Captain America finally collide, and the reverberations will be felt for months to come. Cap made a deal with the devil -- what happens when the devil comes to collect?
Continuing from Civil War, after Frank kills two former villains seeking to join Cap's side, Captain America begins to pound on Frank. Frank insists that Cap knew exactly what he was getting with him. He refuses to fight back. Flashbacks are shown from when Frank was training in the Marines and Cap paid the troops a visit. Frank refused to hit Cap then also.
With the Punisher refusing to fight back, Cap just walks away. The others let him leave on his own.
Bridge continues to talk to Stu Clarke. He gives him a warning that the Punisher will be coming for him. When Bridge leaves, he orders his men to take Clarke out. Prepared, Clarke manages to blast his way out through the window.
Using a tracking device, Clarke manages to find Frank and brings him to an old S.H.I.E.L.D. armory. Using the newfound weapons, the Punisher has a run in with the Rhino. Using a new kind of gun and the "Satan Claw" power glove, he soon knocks the Rhino senseless. The Punisher then tells the Rhino to tell everybody that he's back.
It's the night of the anniversary of the first manned faster-than-light space flight and birth of the Fantastic Four. Ben and Johnny watch a Lateline program dedicated to this event. Several people, including superheroes, are interviewed on what the Fantastic Four means to them.Reed and Sue are talking, trying to figure out where they will go from here. Sue is still upset and feels she cannot trust Reed for his actions during the "Civil War." She says she still loves him but things will never be the same.
As the show ends and the kids have long been put to bed, Johnny and Ben wonder what will happen next. Finally Sue and Reed show up. They find out that the two have decided not to return to the Fantastic Four. They need time to work on their marriage. In order to not leave them short-handed, they have brought in a couple of replacements.
During the final battle of the Civil War, the Wakandian embassy was destroyed. Needing a place to stay, the Black Panther and Storm have agreed to join the team.
As the Mole Man is invading the world, a call is put out to the Fantastic Four. Reed hangs up on the call because it is their 45th anniversary with Marvel and no one has congratulated them. Just then, Stan Lee comes to pay them a visit. With the city being overrun, Reed finally gives in and agrees to fight and defeat the Mole Man. Stan says he has a better answer that doesn't involve fighting. He runs out and the FF dedide to give him five minutes. As they are about to go out, Stan returns with the Mole Man. He has given up and wants peace. Surprised, they ask Stan how he got Mole Man to give up. Stan tells them that he promised Mole Man a cameo in the next Fantastic Four movie.

Jonah Jameson. Jameson tells him he wants something different like photos of Johnny Storm. Peter then goes to the race track to get some pics.

Overview
In the midst of the harsh division of the Civil War, James Buchanan Barnes, Captain America’s one-time partner Bucky, faces his first Christmas of the 21st century. And faces the truth of the terrible things he was forced to do as the Winter Soldier. And with Cap caught in a conflict he can neither take a side of - or understand - what moves can he make to try to redeem himself? And what do Hydra have planned for New York this Christmas? Featuring guest appearances by the Young Avengers and some of the original Invaders, this Special issue is an action-packed character study that defines the Winter Soldier’s future place in the Marvel Universe. By Wizard Top Ten writer Ed Brubaker, with dynamic art by Lee Weeks (Civil War Frontline) and a cover by Cap fan-fave Steve Epting.
The story starts out on Christmas Eve, 1944. Bucky Barnes and Thomas "Toro" Raymond prepare to spend the evening taking a break from the war and enjoying themselves during the war. We fast forward to modern day where we find the Winter Soldier on his way to an appointment. En route, he recieves a call from Nick Fury, the former head of SHIELD, who informs him that he has a mission he needs Barnes to do.
Having no choice, the Winter Soldier finds three of the Young Avengers, Patriot, Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), and the Vision about to raid, what they think is, a Stark factory. The warehouse is really a Hydra base.
After some fighting and arguing, the quartet soon find themselves in a battle against an army of Hydra operatives. During the fight, Winter Soldier soon comes to realize that these "kids" have the potential to do well.
After the Vision is able to deduce that the Winter Soldier is, in fact, Bucky Barnes, they follow him to a cemetary where he is dealing with the fact that he killed Jack Monroe, Captain America's former sidekick, Nomad.
After the three Young Avengers pay their respect to Bucky, we find Barnes meeting with Namor. They are standing at another gravesite, that of Thomas Raymond, where they discuss his life as a hero.

In a letter written by Chris Powell (Darkhawk), he recounts how when he was younger, people always told him he reminded them a lot of his father. But, since his family had had their share of problems while Chris was growing up, there were times when Chris disliked being compared to him. Chris' father had been a police officer, who'd always seen the worst in people and believed that the bad always maintained an upper hand over the good. He had sacrificed a lot to try and even that balance over the years, even at the expense of Chris's family's happiness. Because of this, Chris was resentful of his father. But, as Chris got older, he realized exactly why his father did what he did. He had hoped to tip the scales so that the good side would have a brighter future, and once Chris stumbled across the Darkhawk amulet, he found himself following in his father's footsteps. But, he's had to stop... for his own safety.
The Darkhawk amulet had given him all kinds of different powers and different armors over the years, but the more he's used it the greater a mystery it has become. Chris used to believe that the amulet only affected him on a physical level, but more and more these days, it's psychological. And not in a good way. The less he uses it... the better. Chris worries about all the trouble knocking at their door. Mickey (Turbo) is always stressed and seems constantly pissed at him. Julie (Lightspeed) has been lying about who and what she is. No one ever trusted Mattie (Spider-Woman III) and Johnny (Ricochet) seems like he doesn't even care anymore. Out of all of Excelsior, Chris strongly dislikes Phil (Green Goblin), because he knows Phil still carries a torch for Mickey. He's starting to become the most unhinged... but what can you expect from a former Green Goblin?
Chris has seen his real family pulled apart once before. He doesn't like seeing his 'family' here suffering through the same thing, so it's up to him to fight to keep them together... just like his father would.
(The apartment of Mickey Musashi)
As Chris recovers from the blow he received with the flower vase, he remembers how he learned most of what he knows about life from his dad. He had helped open Chris's eyes to the way the world really works. As a cop with too many years under his belt, he had believed that the good guys were the underdogs. "If only our side had an edge," is what he used to say. As Chris gets up, he is stunned to see that his Darkhawk amulet is gone from his chest and horrified to see that Phil, or the Green Goblin, is under the guise of Darkhawk. Right now, Chris could sure as hell use an edge.
Hollow, frightened, attacks Phil who promptly knocks her out, laughing the maniacal laugh of a Green Goblin. The Goblin grabs Mickey before she attempts to escape using a grappling hook. Darkly, he asks Mickey if this is what she had always secretly wanted - both loves of her life (Darkhawk and "Phil") put into one being. He asks her for a kiss, but this is when Chris gets up with a baseball bat in his hands. The Green Goblin laughs again. Chris, the knight without his shining armor. The Goblin taunts Chris; a baseball bat against the Darkhawk armor? That blow must have knocked him senseless. Chris, enraged, attacks the Goblin with the bat and roars about how he knows what his amulet is capable of. Chris touches the glowing amulet on the Goblin's chest, and within seconds, he becomes Darkhawk as well.
Darkhawk immediately throws the Green Goblin out through Mickey's roof. Julie, carrying Namie, flies overhead just in time to see the Green Goblin blasted into the air. Thinking the Goblin is Darkhawk, Julie attempts to help him. The Goblin, however, snaps and rams the both of them into a nearby pool. It is at this point where the real Darkhawk flies out through Mickey's roof and mutters about how he should have known Phil was crazy. The Goblin, in a fit of rage, screams about how he's nothing like the other Goblins. Darkhawk finally realizes that it was Phil who wasn't really listening at their meetings. He shouldn't deny his problem - he should open his eyes and accept it. And with that, both Darkhawk and the Green Goblin begin battling... in a fight that takes them through the streets of Los Angeles.
Julie and Namie, sopping wet, climb out of the pool and rush up to Mickey's apartment, finding her on the floor with Hollow standing over her. As Julie helps Mickey, Namie, stunned, freezes when she recognizes Hollow. Hollow instantly rushes over to Namie and hugs her, prompting Julie to wonder why she isn't surprised that they both know each other - both Namie and Hollow were Fujikawa escapees. Namie apologizes for Hollow's behavior, but Mickey cuts her off by saying Hollow attempted to protect her from that psycho. Mickey quickly recounts the events of what happened with Darkhawk and the Green Goblin. Julie wonders how two Darkhawks is even possible, leading Mickey to wonder how Chris's amulet works. Darkhawk had a couple of different armors over the years... and they always just assumed it was Chris inside. And it hits Julie: what if it wasn't Chris inside? That could explain his freak-outs...
Before she goes on, Johnny and Mattie both arrive. Mattie instantly understands that a couple guests 'in costume' have shown up. Mickey, sour, confirms it. She walks to her bedroom, and tells Julie, Namie, Hollow, Johnny and Mattie that she is tired of sitting on the sidelines. What good has it done her? She's been lied to, betrayed, and almost killed. Enough is enough! As she takes out a box from under her bed, she realizes that maybe the Goblin was right... maybe she is scared. But, there's nothing like a little fear to remind her what her responsibilities in life are. So to hell with their rules for the time being! As of now... the gloves are back on! And with that, Mickey puts on her Turbo gloves!
Darkhawk and the Green Goblin continue their battle, but are suddenly blasted away from one another. As it turns out, the rest of Excelsior has arrived: Turbo, Spider-Woman, Namie, Hollow, Lightspeed and Ricochet rush to Darkhawk's side, with Turbo proud of her costume. She blasts the Green Goblin off his feet while battling him at the same time. The Goblin attempts to escape, but Spider-Woman uses her many legs to pin him down. Ricochet blasts several of his discs at the Goblin while Hollow claws at him. Lightspeed then rams him into the ground, the same way he rammed her into the pool. Finally, one of Ricochet's discs hits the Goblin in his armored eyes. The Goblin screams his lungs out, but Namie tells him that blindness should be the least of his worries. The red laser-like dagger appears at the band on her wrist. Using it, she picks the Darkhawk amulet off the Goblin's chest. The Darkhawk armor disappears from the Green Goblin's skin, leaving him in a fit of despair.
Hollow attacks the possessed Phil, but Darkhawk tells her to stop. Instead, he attacks the Goblin... man-to-man. Turning off the Darkhawk armor, Chris holds the Goblin around the throat. Turbo tells Chris to stop. Instead, she attacks the Goblin, woman-to-man. She punches the Goblin to the ground, where he lands right beside the Darkhawk amulet. Turbo snatches it from him and hands it to Chris, telling him that he was right. Their powers, no matter where they got them from, are part of who they all are. It's time she started accepting that. Chris, taking his amulet back, thanks her.
The Goblin, still on the ground, laughs his wild laugh. He tells Turbo that he knew she had it in her; she just needed a little help bringing her demons back out. He knew she wasn't ready to give up her costume. He tells her that there is still hope for them. Turbo, disgusted, tells him that the only hope she has is that he get help with all his romantic delusions. And, once she makes sure he's taken care of, the costume is going back into the closet. The Goblin grins, telling her that Miss Fujikawa is going to be disappointed. Turbo, confused, asks him what he means by that. The Goblin reveals that he also cut a deal with Miss Fujikawa, and Miss Fujikawa was more than happy to tell him all about their little arrangement - about how she was planning on selling out Excelsior! Turbo roars at him to shut up, but Spider-Woman, taking off her mask, urges the Goblin to continue talking. If someone is bargaining with their lives, they'd all want to know about it. "Personalizing our problem is the first step in confronting it," Mattie quotes. Turbo snarls about how it's none of Mattie's business.
Mattie tells Turbo to let her be the judge of that. The Goblin maliciously taunts Turbo, who gives him a hard, solid smack across the face. Hollow rushes in and protects the Goblin. Someone always has to get hurt when the truth comes out. Turbo, angry, asks the Goblin how Hollow can defend him even after all this. Getting up, the Goblin tells her that maybe Hollow knows who her true friends really are. Or, maybe her memories are finally coming back. Lightspeed prompts the Goblin to reveal what Miss Fujikawa had said to him. Laughing, the Goblin informs her that for now, it's his secret. She, of all people, can respect that. Ricochet is disgusted with Phil's betrayal; he's like the Goblin calling the frog green... if that makes any sense. The Green Goblin moves away from them, and tells them it's his time to make his exit. Darkhawk tells him that he isn't going anywhere after all he's done. The Goblin, laughing, tells him there is no evidence to prove he did anything. He assures Excelsior that Hollow will be going back into good hands, where she will be cared for. Finally, the Goblin tells Excelsior that to hold up her end of the deal, Miss Fujikawa is letting them keep the Red Ronin in exchange for Hollow. Turbo, confused, wonders what Miss Fujikawa expects them to do with a giant robot. The Green Goblin corrects her and reveals that he never meant that Red Ronin. It was decommissioned years ago. Miss Fujikawa had left them the new model, the UJ1-DX... Namie!
Excelsior is shocked. The Green Goblin tells them that Namie is another lost soul who has no idea of what she truly is. Because of this, she's going to fit perfectly with Mickey's group. If they can ever pull themselves back together and get back on the wagon! And with that, laughing maniacally, the Green Goblin and Hollow leave Excelsior for good. After a short silence, Mattie admits that Phil was right. She herself is sour about how she almost bought into the whole 'doing more good by not using their powers' crock they're selling. Mattie tells Excelsior to count her out from now on. They've been trying so hard to stay out of costume and put their pasts behind them... some of them seem to have forgotten what it means to be a hero in the first place. Finally, she tells Ricochet that she can't believe she actually slept with him. And with that, Mattie also leaves the group as well, leaving a confused Excelsior behind. Namie, still shocked about what she is, sits by herself on the ground. Johnny awkwardly turns away from Julie, while Mickey desperately stares at Chris, wondering's what's next.
(The apartment of Johnny Gallo - one week later)
One week later, Excelsior meets in Johnny's apartment. Namie, in different clothes, sits with her head down. Julie has her arms crossed, Mickey sits sternly, but Chris stares at two empty chairs... chairs that should have been filled with Phil Urich and Mattie Franklin. Johnny apologizes for putting the chairs there... he had hoped the other two would come. Wishful thinking, he guesses. Julie bitterly makes a dark remark about how she knows what Johnny was wishing for (Mattie). Mickey then thanks everyone for arriving, especially given what happened the week before. She does feel it's important that they talk about what they're feeling out in the open, now more than ever. Mickey asks if Julie would like to open up to anything; Julie turns her head and says she's still confused about a lot of things. She then asks Chris about the whole double-Darkhawk situation. He says that there are a few things he needs to figure out himself. She asks Namie if she's had any luck with her memories, but Namie bluntly tells her that all her circuits are still busy. Mickey finally asks Johnny, but he tells her he pleads the fifth. Mickey stands up, and tells the group she'll start, as she clearly has the most explaining... and apologizing... to do. Mickey stands up, and introduces herself as a former teenage superhero. Everyone says hi.
But Chris Powell thinks... when your eyes are opened to the way the world really works, people usually find that they don't like what they see. Especially what they see in themselves. There will always be questions they want answered (Namie), and mysteries they want solved (Phil and Mattie). They have to accept the fact that some secrets will remain hidden (Johnny) and certain truths will remain untold (Julie). But even when trust is shattered and the pain of guilt is almost too much to bear, they have to remember that there's always hope. And no matter how badly things have fallen apart around them, that hope will slowly put the pieces back together again.
The end... for now.
Notes:
At the time these synopses were written, not much has been seen of Excelsior. They next appeared in a story called 'Secret Santa' in Marvel Holiday Special 2007 and then in War of Kings: Darkhawk #1. Darkhawk left Excelsior, registered himself as a super hero and became the Head of Security at Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. He hooked up with Excelsior again in War of Kings: Darkhawk #1.
The cover is an homage to the John Hughes movie, Sixteen Candles.
(Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California)
Julie Power (Lightspeed, of Power Pack) stands on the roof of the Hyatt Hotel, telling Phil Urich (the heroic Green Goblin) on the phone that she can't go on like this. Phil is begging her not to do it; they've come too far for her to just throw it all away. Julie replies that he did the best he could, and she appreciates it, but this is her choice. She says she's tired of living a lie. As Julie walks to the edge, Phil desperately begs her to stop, telling her that she can get all the help she needs. Julie, saying goodbye, hangs up and falls over the edge.
Julie manages to fly herself to safety, and it is revealed that Julie wasn't contemplating suicide at all; only asking Phil if she could use her powers (something Excelsior isn't fond of). Mickey Musashi (Turbo from the New Warriors) asks Phil what pushed her over the edge – no pun intended. Phil is miserable – Julie had been doing so well, not using her powers. Mickey asks what building she jumped off and Phil tells her it was the Hyatt. Mickey is shocked – the Hyatt is just a block away, so why couldn’t she resist temptation? Phil replies that tall buildings get her every time, and says that she should learn to keep her powers to herself or risk endangering her entire family. Phil says that if the Civil War was good for anything, it showed them how important it is, now more than ever, to keep their powers to themselves – to stay out of costume. Mickey agrees with him, and suggests they go find Julie. It’s time for an intervention.
(Holy Trinity Church - Excelsior meeting)
In the basement, Johnny Gallo (Ricochet from the Slingers) leans over a chair lazily. Chris Powell (Darkhawk) sits beside him, comfortably. Mattie Franklin (Spider-Woman III) sits tensely beside Phil who is looking at his watch. Johnny complains about meeting in the Church basement and Mickey replies that the reason they meet there is to remind themselves about the point of their group: namely to abandon their powers. Johnny makes a sarcastic remark, to which Mickey replies with a harsh comeback. Phil warns her to calm down. He suggests that, even though Julie hasn’t arrived yet, they should start the meeting. Mickey then turns to Mattie and says that it is her turn.
Reluctantly, Mattie gets up and dives into her story: she was the third Spider-Woman, or 'the Young One' as some of them remind her. She explains that her powers pretty much destroyed her life. “That’s something they don’t tell you when you put on the tights. Become a super hero. Fight crime. Save lives. Every life but your own, that is.” One day, Mattie was out there, minding her own business, and the next thing she knew, dope-dealing junkies drug her and keep her hostage while they pick her apart, stealing some of her skin and blood in order to adopt her powers. What really horrified Mattie later, was that she found out that they didn’t even know what her powers were. She was nothing but the next high to them. After being violated like that, Mattie had no desire to ever use her powers again. They disgusted her. Just being in New York made her sick which was the main reason she came to Los Angeles to hook up with Excelsior. As Mattie cries, she reveals that the reason she joined the group was to be around people who understand that super-powers can be as much of a curse as a blessing. Mickey gets up to comfort her, but that is when Julie Power enters the room.
Julie, who was talking on the phone to her brother, Alex, ends the conversation by saying, “Don’t worry, Alex, I know what I’m doing. I’ll tell them when I think the time’s right.” Julie then apologizes for being late, but Mickey cuts her off by snapping, “When the time’s right for what?” Embarrassed, Julie says that she wants to tell her parents of her wish to be an actress. Phil reminds everyone what Julie did today; Julie apologizes for that as well, saying she 'needed to let her hair down a bit.' Mickey snaps back harshly. “Let your hair down? Is that what she calls jumping off a hotel on Sunset Boulevard in broad daylight? Who’s her hairstylist, Daredevil?"
Phil tells Mickey to calm down. Getting up, he tells Julie the purpose of their group is to try and put their powers behind them. Their reasons and motives may vary, but they have to support each other. Phil informs her that because of her 'aerial joyride,' they can barely trust her. Chris then asks why they even bother reprimanding her; it’s in through one ear and out the other with Tinkerbell. Johnny immediately turns to him, warning him to watch his mouth. Julie, however, tells him to forget it. She’s a big girl who can fight her own battles.
Julie then dives into her speech. Unlike the other members, Julie got her powers when she was a little girl. She’s had them as long as she can remember. They’re part of who she is: as much a part of her life as walking and talking. She turns to the others. Chris found the Darkhawk amulet when he was a teenager, and could give himself the dark force powers whenever he chooses. Mickey’s powers come from her costume; no powers, no Turbo. The same goes for Phil, who only became the Green Goblin after donning one of the masks his predecessor left behind to become a hero. Johnny, as a mutant, must understand what she is going through, but even so, his ricochet abilities only developed in college. She turns to Mattie and says that even though she’s sorry for what happened to her, Mattie hasn’t been at this as long as they have. Julie then begins to complain about how they had normal lives before it began, unlike her. Crying heavily, Julie begs them not to blame her for simply being herself.
Mickey rushes to Julie and apologizes, but Chris says, "And the academy award goes to..." - earning him a punch from Johnny. Phil, standing up, says he understands what she is going through, however, as the world around them is still changing, he advises her that self-sacrifice is the new order of the day. This angers Mattie. "Self-sacrifice?" Angrily, she shows the rest of the room her four, long, arching Spider-legs emerging from her back. "Self-sacrifice?" Mattie says she may not have had her powers as long as they have, but this is what passes as normal for her. This is what she's forced to live with. She has to fight to conceal those things, and the pressure on her back is a constant reminder of what power she has. Mattie, angry, snaps at Julie, saying that just because 'she hasn't been at this nearly as long,' she doesn't know what it's like to have powers that affect your everyday life. Leaving the room, she suggests that they try walking a mile on her extra legs. Chris immediately jumps up, and races after her, chasing her outside. Mattie then turns and gives him a little smirk. "You think they bought it?" she asks.
Chris is stunned - Mattie's anger was all an act. Julie isn't the only actress in the group. Chris asks why Mattie did that, and Mattie explains. Joining Excelsior was the only way her step-dad would allow her to move here. Chris asks if she even follows the group's real mission: to not use their powers and adapt to a normal civilian life. Mattie does believe in what they are trying to accomplish, however, things have changed for her. She holds up her Spider-Woman costume and mentions that she still is attached to her superhero life. Chris asks what made her want to put the suit back on, and she tells him of how her past caught up with her. His and her past, actually. Chris is confused. His past? Mattie explains: the Daily Bugle had published a story about him (as Darkhawk), selling his blood to junkies and letting them get high. Mattie tells him this is his chance: if he could put his Darkhawk costume back on, he could take down some dealers and clear his name by proving Darkhawk really is a hero. Mattie reveals the reason she put her costume back on was that she found the Mutant Growth Hormone dealers who abused her, here in LA. That's why she wanted to move here. She learned that the MGH Dealers had moved from New York (which was going crazy) and arrived here in LA, because the Pride were no longer around.
Mattie invites Chris to clear his and her name at the same time. Right now. Fingering his Darkhawk amulet, he says a quick night of crime-fighting shouldn't hurt. Changing into Darkhawk, he asks if this should stay a secret between both of them. She agrees; after all, what they don't know won't hurt them. As the two of them fly off to stop the drug dealers, Johnny watches from below, murmuring "And the academy award goes to... Mattie Franklin, it looks like".
(Downtown, Los Angeles)
Darkhawk and Spider-Woman arrive at the warehouses where the MGH dealers have their base of operations. Darkhawk suggests they should go into a full-frontal fight, though Spider-Woman wants to see what they're up against. Darkhawk ignores her, and goes into a full-frontal fight anyway. Mattie sighs. She had to pick the 'unstable one.' Her luck with men never changes. Inside, Darkhawk has already knocked out half the MGH dealers by the time Spider-Woman arrives. Just after they defeat every dealer, Darkhawk notices a woman on a bed in the corner. Horrified, he rushes up to see that she is a mutant, and the MGH dealers are taking her blood. Just before Darkhawk saves her, the woman jumps up and reveals herself to be Nekra, vampire-like mutant. As it turns out, Nekra was willingly giving her blood. Darkhawk and Spider-Woman begin to engage her in battle, with Spider-Woman sardonically remarking that she thought vampires were supposed to take blood, not give it. It is at this moment that Ricochet arrives, having followed them ever since their meeting.
While fighting Nekra, Ricochet tells Spider-Woman and Darkhawk that they were losing the fight terribly, though Darkhawk says they're a little out of practice. Spider-Woman, however, is angry that Ricochet followed them. Ricochet shoots one of his disks in Nekra's eyes, Spider-Woman grabs her with her legs and Darkhawk blasts a purple energy ray from his amulet at Nekra. Finally, the villain collapses to the ground. Spider-Woman looks around the warehouse and finds a folder about Nekra. Apparently, she is a mutant whose body produces 'neo-adrenaline,' which means the more worked up she gets, the stronger she becomes. The MGH dealers were paying her a fortune for her blood. Worse, Spider-Woman finds out the MGH dealers have a big revolving door of donors. She is angry. While Excelsior has been ignoring their powers, the MGH dealers have been turning a minor business into a company. After much deliberation, the three of them (Spider-Woman, Darkhawk, and Ricochet) decide to continue wearing their superhero costumes to look into this company further. Ricochet asks if they should get the others involved, but Spider-Woman suggests that they should keep this secret between themselves... besides, what they don't know won't hurt them.
Back at Excelsior's meeting, Julie, Mickey and Phil stare at the three empty chairs. After a silence, Julie asks, "Think they're coming back?"Notes:
The Loners were first seen as a group in Runaways (2nd series) #1. They were originally called Excelsior, and sponsored by Rick Jones, but due to copyright wranglings over the use of that name, Marvel changed the name to Loners.
Each Loners cover in this series parodies a movie by director John Hughes. The cover of this issue is The Breakfast Club.
(Los Angeles, California)
Johnny Gallo (Ricochet) recounts what happened previously in an email to a dead friend (a former member of the Slingers, Eddie). For most of the email, he mentions how he, Spider-Woman and Darkhawk fought Nekra and a couple of MGH dealers, and how the three of them are hiding the fact that they used their powers from the rest of Excelsior. He feels guilty for lying to the group. He mentions that writing letters to a dead friend may be therapeutic, but it doesn't give him the advice he needs. Johnny ends the e-mail by saying he misses him.
(Los Angeles, California - night)
Johnny is in his apartment - images of Los Angeles, the City of Angels fly through his mind. Southland, Hollywood, the Hills. Forget dreams, Los Angeles is the city of fantasy. It's not about "What's Now!" It's about "What's Next?" Johnny feels LA is the place where people come to live the lives of their idols: "The Young and the Senseless". LA is a culture that breeds a certain mentality ... it's about discovering what's hot and finding it faster than anyone else. It's a way of life even reflected in the names of the movies they make: Heat. Speed. Boiling Point. And for someone like Johnny Gallo, a young, single guy who's all about being one step ahead of the game ... it's perfect. Slamming down upon his Guitar Hero guitar, Johnny roars "Thank you, Los Angeles!!" Fast and furious - that's how he rolls!
Or at least ... that's how he used to roll.
(Johnny's apartment, later)
Johnny, in his shirt and underwear, stands around his bare apartment and sighs, slowly lowering the guitar. Nowadays, things are a little different for him. Johnny is a mutant, who has decided not to use his powers anymore. He's got superhuman agility with amazing reflexes, and a handy-dandy "danger sense" that's suppose to warn him of ... danger. He picks up a flat, gold disc inscribed with an "R" - one of his Ricochet discs. He picks up his Ricochet costume, but slowly lowers it, after remembering how he was a teenage superhero, and how he and Excelsior had abandoned their powers after realizing how much problems came with their powers. While surfing the internet, he clicks upon a news story online - about Nekra. Apparently, Nekra was transferred to S.H.I.E.L.D. custody. Authorities are still searching for the heroes who stopped her. Johnny reads on, all the while thinking of what type of help he could be doing, if only he hadn't abandoned his power. He thinks about how they justify their actions by telling themselves that they sometimes need to put the costumes back on for the Greator Good. But, bitterly, he realizes the truth: sometimes, their inner demons get the better of them. Sometimes, their powers become an addiction. That's why they attend the meetings, and say what they think they want to hear ... just to make it easier to look at themselves in the mirror when the masks come off. He looks at the back of the Ricochet disk, and sees his solemn reflection staring back. He decides to attend these meetings, for the right reasons ...
(Molly's Irish Pub - the next morning)
Johnny sits with Mattie (Spider-Woman) and Chris (Darkhawk). Chris asks him what's so important that can't wait until after the meeting. Before Johnny answers, Mattie points out Johnny has a crush on the cute readhead owner of the pub. Chris laughs at this, although Johnny remains solemn. Johnny tells the other two he plans to tell the rest of Excelsior about how he, Mattie and Chris stopped Nekra. Predictably, the other two are outraged, though Johnny feels he wants to bring them into the loop. Chris, however, says they did promise Mattie they'd give her time to dig deeper into the MGH operations. Johnny counteracts by saying they shouldn't wait; they have information, and they should act upon it. Mattie, however points out it is criminal information.
Johnny becomes agitated, and explains that since the three of them stopped Nekra and the MGH operations, they're probably closing up their operations to relocate. Johnny wonders if what they read in their lab was true; not only are they paying top dollar to doners for DNA to make this drug, but they may also be holding others hostage and taking it by force. Chris feels the whole operation may be a trap to lure heroes in, but Mattie begs Johnny not to tell - she wants him to lay off for a couple more days while she researches ways to stop the dealers. Johnny finally gives in, and sarcastically apologizes - he says he mistook her for someone who cared. Rolling his eyes at her, he remarks sardonically that she even had him fooled with that MGH 'sob story' of hers.
Mattie snaps. Holding Johnny angrily by his shirt, she growls about how he wakes up feeling self-righteous and how he feels he has the right to judge her. While Chris holds Mattie back from a shocked Johnny, she continues with her tirade, saying that Johnny isn't fooling anyone. She knows exactly what this is all about. She says she knows the only reason Johnny really wants to tell the group about how they stopped big, bad Nekra is because he thinks Julie will be impressed enough to jump into bed with him. Backing off, she tells Johnny if he wants to really tell the group, fine; but at least when he does it, he does it because he believes in it - not because he's looking for a little action. She then storms out the pub. Chris gives Johnny an odd look, and asks if what Mattie said was actually true. Johnny doesn't answer the question, but asks Chris about what he thinks. Chris suggests they continue to keep the secret to themselves, and give Mattie the time she needs. But, even after Chris leaves, Johnny stares at his reflection in the Ricochet disc, wondering if it's really a good deed.
(The Holy Trinity Church - later that evening)
Excelsior sit around in a circle, silently. Chris, Mattie and Johnny are awkwardly staring off in different directions. Phil (Green Goblin) notices, and remarks about how "talkative" they are. Standing up, Phil decides to talk about Nekra and the 'mystery heroes' that stopped her. Chris, Mattie and Johnny's heads snap up, immediatley thinking that Phil has figured it out, but it turns out he hasn't. Given the situation in New York for the past few months (the Civil War) it makes sense that heroes and villains have moved to Los Angeles. While this is also a concern, it can be an opportunity as well - not only is this an opportunity to test Excelsior's main mission, but to also help other young heroes join them in putting their powered pasts behind them. They've accepted a pledge and made a promise that helped their transition into a more normal life. Phil ponders about how there may be others who want to get out of the superhero game, and start afresh. That's why he wants them to join their "family". Phil then turns to Johnny and reminds him that this week, it's his turn to talk about his past. Johnny gets up, and re-introduces himself. Instead of talking about his past, he wants to talk about something along the lines of what Phil said. Johnny says he has a confession to make; Mattie and Chris, are tense, hoping that Johnny won't expose them.
Johnny reveals that he hates his life. He apologizes for saying it, but he feels that he doesn't think he's cut out for a so-called 'normal life.' He thought that was what he wanted, but now he's not sure. Does hiding who he is makes himself a better person? Johnny slowly informs the group that he never told them the real reason why he came out to LA.
(flashback)
Sighing, he reveals that back in New York, he got a friend of his killed. Memories immediately start running through his mind. Back when he used to run with the Slingers, his best friend was Eddie McDonough, who went by the name Hornet. He was the one who made him his throwing Ricochet discs. Even after the Slingers broke up, Eddie and Johnny still used to hang out, in and out of costume. As time went on though, both started to put their masks on for different reasons. Eddie loved being a hero. He felt it was their responsibility to continue in the work they started as the Slingers. Fighting crime, taking down bad guys, protecting the innocent ... Eddie was Hornet for the right reasons. Johnny, on the other hand, would fight crime and feel good knocking out a thug's teeth ... to save the damsel in distress. He loved the spotlight; his name on the news, the fame, and other benefits (him sleeping with the girls he saved). But after he started to lose some of the fame, he felt there was no point in putting the costume back on.
Eddie had done his best to try and motivate Johnny into going back into saving lives - Hornet and Ricochet, slinging again. He never took him up on the offer. Then one night, Eddie called Johnny and practically begged him for his help. He'd gotten wind of something big that would put both of them back on the map. Johnny, however, laughed and told him they'd be better off burning the map. He wished him luck and hung up, not knowing that would be the last thing he ever said to him. Eddie died a few hours later. He got killed going up against a threat he knew he couldn't handle (Wolverine)... but that was Eddie. He lived to protect the innocent. He died because Johnny turned his back on him.
(present)
Johnny lifts the Ricochet throwing disc Eddie had given him, and whispers his apology. The rest of Excelsior stare at the floor in silence. Johnny tells them he wanted to get away from the guilt and start fresh, and put his past behind him. When he hooked up with Excelsior, he couldn't believe his luck - he found other people whose lives were screwed up by their powers just as much as his was. And when they did put their costumes on (when Excelsior stopped Ultron) he felt happy. He thought he was doing Eddie proud. Johnny reveals that he loathes the fact they are hiding in a basement, denying who they are - he feels it is their responsibility to make the world a better place. Angry, he storms out the room. Although Mickey (Turbo) wants to stop him, Julie (Lightspeed) prevents her, reminding her that she jumped of a roof last week. Sometimes, you've got to fall a little on your own before you can pick yourself back up.
(Johnny's apartment - later that night)
Johnny sits in his dark apartment, morose. He stares around the room, where his Ricochet discs and outfits are lying upon the ground. Looking at the computer screen, he remembers about Nekra and the MGH dealer's operation. Finally, he makes his decision. Donning the outfit, he decides to go and stop them. He decides he does need some help, so he calls Mattie who rejects his call because she is still annoyed with him. He calls Chris, who also rejects the call because he is on a date ... with Mickey. As Chris picks up Mickey from her home, she asks if he's heard from Johnny. Chris looks down at the call he just rejected, and says he hasn't heard from him. He feels Johnny needs some time to himself.
Elsewhere, however, Ricochet stands outside the MGH dealer's new base of operations and realizes he's alone. Bitterly, he realizes this is how Hornet felt when he rejected him. Sneaking into the grounds, he secretly gloats about how Chris was wrong about it being a trap. But upon sneaking into the silent lab, he feels Chris may have been right. Johnny walks around the lab, and notices experimental pods all lined up with unconcious women in the water. Horrified, he stares as a pod with a scratches on it, but someone from behind him calls "I knew you'd come ... partner!"
Ricochet turns around and sees a woman carrying swords. The enraged lady attacks Ricochet in revenge, but a confused Ricochet attempts to defend himself. He tells her she must have mistaken him for someone else, but she reveals she came to LA after hearing he lived here. Ricochet finally gets it; she is Delilah, the crazy assassin that teamed up with ... the first Ricochet. He tells her he is the second Ricochet to wear this costume, a new an improved one - like Ricochet 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Delilah doesn't believe him, and Ricochet knows she only hears what she wants to hear. Taking out a Ricochet disc, he realizes that being a super hero is a lot like living in LA - it's not about "What's Now!", but about "What's Next?" It's about anticipating your opponent's moves before they even make them, and that's how your always one step ahead of the game. Ricochet throws the disc, and it crashes through the pod with the scratches. Delilah, confused, doesn't notice Ricochet behind her - he promptly knocks her out. At the same time, stepping out of the crashed experimental pod is the frightening mutant formerly known as Penence, of Generation X, now known as Hollow. Hollow flexes her long claws, glaring at Ricochet. Shocked, Ricochet steps back and realizes that their way of life can be reflected in the names of certain movies as well. Like Psycho. In Cold Blood. And even Death Wish.
Notes:
Since all covers are a parody of a John Hughes film, this cover parodies Ferris Bueller's Day Off, with Ricochet taking over from Matthew Broderick.
Young and the Restless are referenced Guitar Hero. The films Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, Heat, Speed, Boiling Point, Psycho, In Cold Blood and Death Wish.
Hornet's death happened when a possessed Wolverine went on a rampage in Wolverine (3rd series) #23, part of the "Enemy of the State" storyline.
(Los Angeles, California)
Phil Urich (Green Goblin) recounts what happened previously in a letter to himself. His Daily Bugle reporter uncle, Ben Urich, once wrote, 'Madness consumed every Green Goblin.' Every single one of them... but him. Long ago, Phil had told himself that he'd break the curse by being a Goblin, not becoming one. He refused to be haunted by the ghosts of the past. After his Goblin costume was destroyed, he moved out here to LA to start fresh. He quickly found out that he wasn't alone - he hooked up with Mickey Musashi, another ex-New Yorker and ex-super hero trying to start over.
While trading vigilante war stories, the two were reminded of how often they did more harm than good. Increased membership into their group meant increased temptation... some members felt the urge to put on their costumes again. Phil, being the only one without his costume, admits to himself that it does bother him. It actually hurts more when they lie about it.
Phil is pretty sure it was Darkhawk, Spider-Woman and Ricochet who went out and busted up the MGH lab; he saw the looks on their faces when he brought it up at the meeting. He knew that Mattie must have 'charmed' Chris and Johnny to do her dirty work, but he worries if Mickey might go. Would she lie to him? It couldn't be Julie - her lights would have been a dead giveaway. Phil worries that he thinks the others feel sorry that he can't do what they do. Phil goes into a stream of bitter thoughts... let them keep their secrets. He doesn't need their pity. He knows they're weak. That's it... they're not as strong as he is. They can't put their pasts behind them. Him? He's in control... like when he was the Goblin. The ghosts that haunted the previous Green Goblins never got the better of him! He knows how to handle them. He's locked them away inside, never to be seen again. The joke's on Excelsior. Phil ends off his letter by repeatedly writing a maniacal "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
(A hospital bathroom - night)
As Phil vomits into the toilet, he thinks to himself - if there was one word he'd use to sum up his life, it'd have to be control. He likes having it... but hates losing it, like how he is right now (he vomits more). Getting up, he begins to pull himself together. He kept a tight reign upon his life; there should be no reason a little stress right now should freak him out. However... confrontation of any kind always sickens him. When he knows there's a fight coming, he can feel himself slowly slipping away. As he washes his face beside the sink, he realizes he must pull himself together - after all, how can he lead a group of misfit ex-super heroes when he can't even control the demons that lurk inside of him? The devilish spirit of the Green Goblin stares out at him from the bathroom mirror.
Phil leaves the bathroom, all the while thinking of the enemy within him. The skeleton in his closet - the devil inside. Phil can call it whatever he wants, but just when he thinks he put a wall between him and his past... his past always comes back to haunt him. As Phil walks down the hospital hall, he reflects on how he used to call himself the 'Heroic' Green Goblin. He didn't have any powers of his own, just what came with his the costume that he inherited. After the suit was destroyed, he told himself he was finished with the superhero life. A reason why he's been doing his best to help others follow in his footsteps. Because, if there is one thing he has learned from being a super hero, it's that no matter how hard you try to do the right thing, someone always gets hurt. And the last thing anyone needs is more blood on their hands... quite unlike Johnny Gallo (Ricochet) who has blood spattered all over him. Phil has arrived in the lobby of the hospital, where Johnny, Mickey (Turbo), Mattie (Spider-Woman) and Chris (Darkhawk) are sitting. No Julie Power (Lightspeed).
Phil storms angrily over to Johnny, who is still in his Ricochet gear. Phil is enraged with Johnny's betrayal - going behind their backs and re-donning his costume. Has he even been listening for the past months? He grabs Johnny's bandage angrily and shows him how someone could have gotten hurt. Phil tells Johnny that this is what happens when he puts on his mask - Mickey, however, stops the fight by reminding them that this still is a hospital. She tells Phil that there will be time for lectures later; Johnny already feels bad enough about what happened to...
At the same time, a Dr. Steves drives Julie Power by in a gurney. Julie is sick and pale. Although Excelsior immediately rush towards her, Dr. Steves backs them off, telling them that Julie made it through surgery and is in a stable condition. Fortunately, the lacerations she suffered were clean - almost surgical. Steves gives them a hardened look and asks what happened to her. Chris, Mickey, Phil and Mattie sheepishly make up excuses, but Johnny remains silent. Steves knows they are lying, but leaves them to it. She does, however, mention that with all the new registration laws (the Superhuman Registration Act), he is legally obligated to report it to the authorities. Phil immediately tells Steves that Julie is registered - but retired. Phil turns to the rest of Excelsior and bitterly adds to Dr. Steves, "They're all retired". Mickey asks what Phil means by 'They.' Dr. Steves is relieved to hear that Julie is registered, but he plans on informing her parents of what happened to their daughter. Even though he doesn't have all the answers they'll be looking for. Once Dr. Steves leaves, Excelsior turns upon Johnny, and Phil asks Johnny for answers they'll all be looking for. Johnny finally explains.
(flashback - MGH base of operations)
Hollow steps out of her experimental pod, flexing her claws at Ricochet, all the while fearfully looking around the room. With a frightening monstrous appearance, she stands the same size as Ricochet, even though she is crouching down. Hollow makes eye contact with Ricochet, and immediately lunges at him; Ricochet knocks her back inside her crashed pod. Just before Hollow steps back out, in a swirl of rainbow colors, Lightspeed bursts into the room. Lightspeed's lights dazzle Hollow, and is almost lured into a false sense of security. Lightspeed comforts Hollow by putting her hand on her shoulder. For a second, Hollow stares morosely down at the end. She then glares at the hand, and quick as a flash, she lunges her claws straight through Lightspeed's chest. Ricochet catches Lightspeed before she falls, and grabs her and runs to the hospital. Hollow sees them run off, a tear slowly trickling down her monstrous face. As Phil listens to the story, he thinks, "Once a monster, always a monster."
(The hospital lobby - now)
Johnny finishes his story. Chris comforts him, and tells him he did the right thing bringing her to the hospital. Mattie also agrees - there was nothing he could have done. Phil, however, asks what was he doing in a Fujikawa lab in the first place. A horrible realization comes to Johnny - Hollow wasn't the only woman in an experimental pod. Johnny tells Excelsior there are other women there, being held captive just like Hollow. He manages to rush outside the hospital, but Phil, Chris and Mickey hold him back. Standing in the parking lot, Phil tells Johnny that he's had no idea what he's gotten himself into. Staying out of this kind of trouble is exactly why they formed this group. Mattie, becomes enraged - she immediately sides with Johnny; when you have powers, responsibilities come with them. They have to save those innocent women. Phil snaps at Mattie, and tells her he is sick of hearing what she has to say. How do they even know that the women are innocent? For all they know, Johnny could have even broken into a legal operation. If they call the cops, they themselves may get arrested. Despite this, Mattie still feels it was a MGH operation. Phil ignores her, and asks if Mickey has anything to say. With the groups pressure on her, Mickey sides with Johnny and Mattie - they need to find out who did this to Julie. Chris says they don't have to look that far ... Hollow is standing there at the other end of the parking lot.
Johnny becomes shocked - he doesn't know how she found them. Mattie suggests it may have been a tracking ability; she followed the smell of blood. Although Phil warns the group not to do anything, Chris immediately activates his Darkhawk amulet and Mattie's spider-legs emerge from her back. Phil wonders if anything he says sinks in. The monstrous Hollow fearfully backs away from Excelsior. But as Phil stares at Hollow, he wonders ... "Once a monster, always a monster?" Despite Excelsior's warnings, Phil walks towards Hollow, realizing he knows what it's like to feel misunderstood. About not judging somone by their appearance. Phil and Hollow, two monsters often misunderstood stare at one another, understanding each other. Hollow slowly pulls him into a kiss, and after pulling away, she whispers "Like". Suddenly, there is a loud hissing noise from behind them. As Hollow shields Phil protectively, a voice calls out "I see your senses are as keen as ever, Hollow".
Materializing from invisibility is a Japanese woman, the assassin Delilah, and several other gun-weilding men. The Japanese woman is Miss Fujikawa, the head of the MGH dealer's operation. Fujikawa walks towards Excelsior and Hollow and tells them that Hollow running away has cost her a substantial amount of money. Fujikawa walks towards Hollow, but Phil smacks her away. Fujikawa warns Phil not to touch her again. She knows who he and Excelsior are; they've been a thorn in her side for a while. Since Excelsior had stopped Nekra, she had been forced to release all her other donors from her old lab. She does not plan on losing Hollow. Although Phil tells her that it wasn't them who stopped Nekra, Miss Fujikawa tells him to keep better watch on his teammates. Spider-Woman snaps, and calls Fujikawa a twisted witch for harvesting innocent people for her sick MGH experiments. Fujikawa tells Mattie she doesn't care; it's profit to her. She does not let morals get in the way of her business. Right before Spider-Woman and Darkhawk attack Fujikawa, Mickey stops the fight. She is bitter with the secret Darkhawk, Spider-Woman and Ricochet had kept from the rest of Excelsior. Walking towards Miss Fujikawa, Mickey speaks to her in Japanese, so both of them can settle matters. Fujikawa agrees. Mickey and Miss Fujikawa walk off, ready to settle problems.
Sometime later, the two finish their conversation, bowing to one another when finished. Miss Fujikawa, Delilah, and the other gun-weilding men soon disappear, even without taking Hollow. Spider-Woman asks Mickey what she said to Fujikawa to make her go away. Mickey responds by saying it's all done. She made their problems go away ... but that answer isn't good for Spider-Woman. She pressures Mickey into spilling the details about the deal she made with her, but Mickey angrily starts yelling at Mattie. Mickey was the one who cleaned up Spider-Woman's mess. Mickey looks around her and roars at Spider-Woman, Darkhawk and Ricochet. They're at a hospital. They're no longer super heroes. This whole thing would have spun out of control; people would've gotten hurt. But she settled the matter for now; she isn't happy about it, but she made the best of a situation that they should never have been with. Mickey ends her tirade by saying if they aren't happy with that, they should feel free to leave. Darkhawk attempts to comfort Mickey, but she rejects him.
(Phil Urich's apartment - Sometime later)
Excelsior's lives have a habit of losing control, and Phil hates it. He walks around his apartment, to where Hollow is sleeping on the living room floor. As he covers her with a blanket, Phil accepts that even though he hates losing control, he knows that life goes on - and they have to move on. He does know that losing control has a way of showing everyone's insecurities; but no matter what, whenever he looks in the mirror, he's forced to confront the demons lurking within. Whether it's the pain of regret (a scene cuts to a lonely Mickey in her bed), the need for vengeance (Mattie sits by herself at a bar), the guilt that eats them up inside (Johnny in his apartment, holding his Ricochet outfit), the secrets they run from (Julie, in a swirl of rainbow light escapes the hospital), the anger they hide (Chris, pouding against a wall) or the pasts they deny (Phil stares at the spirit of the Green Goblin, in the mirror). Phil understands that some of them are just better at locking away their true natures.
This cover parodies the movie, Weird Science.
The issue opens with Julie and Johnny in a diner discussing Julie's vast knowledge of burgers from around the world. Johnny asks if Julie's ever bothered by the fact that she doesn't know everything that these alien powers have done to her.
Julie looks away, lies, and changes the topic of coversation to Phil and his new "friend." Johnny responds with a comment that amounts to "friend" being far too generous a title for someone who stabbed Julie, but Julie says she understands that Hollow was just scared and lashed out. Johnny suggests they just call S.H.I.E.L.D. because of all the new laws, but Julie expresses her concern that then they'd just be moving Hollow from one lab to another. She reassures Johnny that Mattie and Mickey are looking into it, as the two of them get into his car.
Johnny replies that he doesn't trust Mattie, but Julie once again steps in to defend someone from Johnny's skepticism. She turns the topic of conversation to what she sees as a sexual relationship developing between Chris and Mickey. Johnny is skeptical, once again, saying he knows his friend and that Chris would never go out with such a "goody-goody." Julie's skeptical of this, stating that Mickey is totally hot and that Julie herself would totally--but she stops herself there, quickly turning the topic of conversation over to how they need to get to the studio for her audition and her nervousness over it. Johnny wants to know what the rest of Julie's original thought toward Mickey is, but instead expresses his skepticism that a girl who's taken on nearly every bad guy on the planet would be so nervous about one little audition. "Super villains are easy," the former Power Pack "Lightspeed" Julie Power retorts.
Still, Johnny agrees to help her pursue her acting career and reassures her that her dream to be a big star is definitely no secret, so that the two of them should go make her dream a reality. The two of them arrive at Marvel Studios.
Meanwhile, Phil washes the dishes in his apartment, wondering about Hollow and her secrets as he glances at her sleeping, curled up form laying on his floor by the TV and couch. Though it's been a few weeks since she started staying with him, she's only ever said that one word, "Like," which she said when they met for the first time. Phil imagines the kiss the two shared at their first encounter to be something much more romantic than it had been, a smile on his face.
He's concerned about all the secrets she's keeping and that concern quickly turns to anguish and fear as he sees an image of the Green Goblin and Hollow, ready to kiss him, in the reflection of one of the plates he's washing. He cries out, "NOO!" and knocks the dishes off the counter violently away from himself. Hollow, startled awake by Phil's outburst, comforts him as best she can when she sees that he is in emotional pain.
Back at Marvel Studios, Julie angrily leaves an audition with the big Hollywood director who's casting for a movie called "Civil War," Johnny in toe. The director told her to get acting lessons, which causes her to launch into an angry tirade in the hallway to Johnny about how that director wouldn't know acting if he had an Oscar shoved up his--but Julie's interrupted by a man who's very impressed with her blunt honesty about Hollywood. Turns out, it's Mark Lowell, one of Johnny's favorite directors.
Mr. Lowell laments the fact that CGI films are becoming more popular, since he's an old-fashioned action flick director who needs to pay all sorts of costs regarding special training and stuntmen. Julie decides she can help this director out, "outting" herself and Johnny as an ex-superheroes. The director agrees to give them jobs as stuntmen, which Julie is totally thrilled about. He does, however, ask them if they are registered with the government regarding their superpowers and status as heroes. Julie hesitates, then says "yup."
Johnny pulls her aside for a moment, asking her if she really thinks this is a good idea. "Sure, I mean why not?" Julie replies, a little miffed. Johnny reminds her how the rest of the group reacted badly to her using her power of flight a few weeks back, but it doesn't deter Julie, who replies that the true purpose of the group is to put their costumed pasts behind them and that's exactly what she's doing by getting this job. Julie turns and shakes the hand of her new boss, while Johnny reluctantly agrees to go along with it.
Meanwhile, at the Griffith Park Obeservatory, Chris begs Mickey to give him another chance, skeptically questioning her on just how many times he has to apologize for becoming Darkhawk again and whether it was really so bad that he did, since he did it for "the right reasons" like busting up a MGH facility. Mickey retorts with a snide question of whether Chris thinks his "good intentions" justifies him using his powers despite their pledge not to anymore.
Chris, as carefully as possible, calls her out on this bit of b.s., reminding her that she was the one who convinced all of them, a few months ago, to put on their costumes and go after "those runaways." Mickey angrily reveals that her real problem is with the fact that Chris and Mattie were doing it together, alone, as opposed to when they went after The Runaways and it was a group trip.
Chris realizes that Mickey is jealous of Chris spending time with Mattie, even though they were just "on patrol" as Chris says, and Mickey admits that it's part of the reason why she's so upset. Chris gets angry that Mickey doesn't trust him enough, but Mickey reassures him that she does trust him, it's just that Mattie rubs her the wrong way, in general.
Chris questions why Mickey doesn't get jealous of the other girl, Julie, and Mickey quickly makes up an excuse about Julie's career obviously being her top priority. Chris tells Mickey that he couldn't care less what Julie's into, because he's into Mickey, not Julie, and the two of them kiss. Afterward, Chris makes a joke about there hopefully being some time it's okay to put costumes on, like, possibly, in the privacy of their own homes. Mickey sees where Chris is going with this and suggests the bedroom. Chris agrees, saying he'd like to see her in spandex.
Back at Marvel Studios: Cult favorite Mark Lowell's latest action flick is being filmed, with Julie Power as the stuntwoman for the actress playing Black Cat and Johnny Gallo as the stuntman for the actor playing Iron Fist. The two engage in an action sequence which ends with Julie falling to her apparent doom -- which is, of course, just a bit of acting on her part, as she saves herself at the last moment with a rainbow cushion.
The director and a cameraman are very pleased with all the money they'll be saving by using ex-superheroes, with Mr. Lowell sleazily adding that there'll be some "fringe benefits" with his latest "discovery" as Julie is lauded by the film crew for her performance. Mr. Lowell ups the compliment ante by saying that she and Johnny are going to be big stars in this town.
This causes the Julie, the eternal dumb blond as far as Johnny knows, to instantly fly off, shouting "Woo hoo!" and claiming she just HAS to go tell her family all about her fame and success. Johnny, meanwhile, is left behind to make excuses to a stunned Mr. Lowell and Mattie, whom he calls and tells her he has to cancel their lunch meeting due to Julie's antics.
Sitting outside at a table with an umbrella hanging over it, with her laptop in front of her, Mattie is polite enough to Johnny while she's on the phone with him, but calls him an idiot in frustration after she gets off the phone with him. She's looking at a web article whose headline reads "Costumed Casualty After Manhattan Massacre: Murdered Hero Was ESU Student."
Elsewhere, flying through the skyscrapers of Hollywood in the Black Cat suit, Julie enthusiastically tells her sister Katie about her success, who in turn quickly picks up on the fact that Julie's using her powers because she can hardly hear her over all the wind. Julie lies, claiming she's just driving with the window down, and lands near the Hollywood sign. After a short conversation, Katie expresses her concern that Julie is letting her whole "dumb blond" act go to her head. She reminds Julie that Julie is her older sister and that she used to be the smart, responsible one; Katie further wonders when Julie will start acting that part again.
Later on, Julie is changing back into regular clothes in a trailer when there's a knock at the door. It's Mark Lowell, Mr. Director, wanting to collect on some of those "fringe benefits" before and stating how he has the power. Julie decides to show him who really has the power in the trailer and blasts him with a rainbow beam, sending him hurdling out of the trailer. Director Lowell shouts at her that there are laws now to protect people from superpowered freaks like her and suggests he might call the police. Julie replies that he should go ahead and call the police, so that they can explain the laws protecting minors like her from predators like him. Mr. Lowell is shocked to discover that Julie is underage, saying that he assumed--but Julie cuts him off there, saying that he assumed the persona she put on was the real her. Hard to believe it took a dirtbag director like him to realize it, she further states, but she realizes now that it's time to drop the act.
She returns to the roof she jumped off of a few weeks ago, remembering what she said about being tired of living a lie and wanting to be free. That's still true, but she decides that maybe this time it's time to take a step back and keep her feet on the ground, to see what it's really like living without lies. She turns away and walks over the roof towards the exit, the wind blowing through her hair.
Later on, at one of the group's regular meetings at Holy Trinity Church, she confesses to the group that she hasn't been honest with them about who she is. She says that she's had to lie about her powers since she was ten, along with the rest of her siblings, and passes around a photograph of herself with Katie, Alex, and Jack Power as little kids. She confesses that maybe she's gotten too used to lying and that it's too easy to lie to herself. She asks them for a new beginning and reintroduces herself once again as Julie Power.
The others welcome her into the group, ready to give her another chance, but the moment is interrupted by a familiar female voice. She is happy with how they list their meetings online because it's easier for her to find and kill them... and with that Nekra bursts into the room!
(Los Angeles, California - Wednesday, September 12)
Mickey Musashi (Turbo) posts a letter on her blog. "Life is all about balance." Her parents would have been so proud, seeing her embrace her Asian roots by getting all 'zen.' Next thing you know, she'll be spouting off about yin and yang. Ever since Mickey was a child, she found always found herself flipping back and forth between the two sides of the same coin that is her; trying to respect her Japanese heritage while growing up in America, finding it hard to stay grounded after learning how to fly. She found herself trying to leave a somewhat normal life whilst accepting the responsibilities of being a hero... and dealing with the realities of being just a girl in a costume when all her friends are blessed with powers of their own.
Now, she runs a self-help group for ex-teen heroes when she's not even sure they want help anymore. She feels that sometimes, opening themselves up like this only brought more trouble down around them then they ever bargained for. Mickey recounts how Mattie brought all her MGH issues when joining, which led to all kinds of unwanted costumed antics - exactly what they've been trying to avoid. Mickey made a deal with the MGH dealer's president, Miss Fuyumi Fujikawa, by putting those old Japanese language lessons to good use (another way to make her parents proud). Miss Fujikawa dropped Hollow on their laps, though Mickey is wary of her; she has a hunch about her. At the same time, Julie unloads about how she's been lying to them the whole time. Mickey has a feeling she still has a few other secrets... and that is why their balance is out of whack.
That's just the group. Mickey reflects on her tense relationship with Chris, and how she feels guilty for dating someone with powers. Mickey feels the urge to put on her old costume, take to the skies and leave all her stress behind for an afternoon in the clouds. It's tempting, but she knows that she can't give in. She is going to keep her feet planted firmly on the ground. Life is all about balance, and Mickey is the only one who has to make sure it's maintained. Otherwise, Excelsior might just spiral out of control...
(Holy Trinity Church; Excelsior meeting)
Nekra bursts into the room. Johnny Gallo (Ricochet) leaps back, Julie Power (Lightspeed) hovers around the ceiling, Mattie Franklin (Spider-Woman) unleashes her extra legs and Chris Powell (Darkhawk) activates the Darkhawk amulet. Nekra immediately begins to attack the four heroes. All the while, Mickey stands at the back... thinking. This is what happens when trust is broken. The trust she places in strangers... in her teammates... and even in her loved ones. It always comes crashing down around her. Mickey yells at Darkhawk to watch out but Nekra has already grabbed Darkhawk, and she uses him as a baseball bat to shoot Lightspeed out the building. Ricochet remembers how he, Darkhawk and Spider-Woman had stopped Nekra last time. Before he and Spider-Woman attack her, Nekra bashes both of them into a wall, leaving only Mickey and Phil, who is holding a pipe. Phil tells Mickey to stand back; Nekra thinks they're helpless - but the joke's on her! Phil laughs as he attacks Nekra, who punches him into a wall. Nekra then walks towards Mickey, the only one still standing. Grabbing her by the throat, Nekra smiles as she says, "No Powers, No Problems!" Just as she squeezes Mickey's throat, Nekra freezes. She looks down to her chest, where she sees a glowing red lazer-like blade jammed near her heart. Nekra immediately drops to the ground. Mickey, horrified, sees a figure standing in the distance - someone has saved her.
A girl steps into the room. Her appearance makes her look as young as Julie. Around her wrist is a metallic band, where a glowing red lazer-like knife is pointed out. The knife retracts into the band and the girl helps Mickey up. Mickey thanks her and asks who she is, but the girl says that she doesn't know. At this point, Chris awakens and warns the girl to get away from Mickey, but Mickey defends her by pointing out that she is the one who took down Nekra. She is one of the good guys. Mattie, Julie, Johnny and Phil awaken, just in time to see Chris apologize to Mickey for changing into Darkhawk. Mickey tells him never to worry about her, and she kisses him, exposing their relationship. Mattie stares at them in disbelief. Johnny is surprised but Julie smugly tells him that she knew. Phil, however, stares in maniacal anger. His eyes clench, and fury sweeps through him. Phil storms out the room. Julie wonder's what is wrong with him, but Mattie believes that it's because he got kicked by Nekra. Johnny yelps in shock - he recognizes the girl who rescued Mickey. He saw her in the Fujikawa lab; she was one of the women in the tubes. Mickey, once again, defends the girl. She also adds that Chris should turn back into Darkhawk; Nekra is still breathing. Johnny insists that the girl was one of the women in the tubes and the girl does not deny it. In fact, she mentions that she remembers seeing Johnny and Julie there, and saw them running away after Julie was attacked. The girl must have... escaped shortly after.
Mickey is now confused. She asks the girl if she escaped or was released. The girl lowers her head and says she can't remember. Mickey asks how the girl found them, and how can she use the energy blade from her wrist. The girl's voice breaks as she reveals she doesn't know. All she did was walk in, see that Mickey was in trouble, and the blade was just there. It's as if part of her memory has been wiped clean. All she knows is her name... Namie. Namie raises her head and slowly starts weeping as she begs them to help her. Mattie however rolls her eyes and doesn't trust Namie, mainly because she and Nekra's "evil-sounding" names both start's with 'N'. Besides, both of them showing up is a bit too coincidental. And they both seem to connect to the Fujikawa woman that Mickey made a deal with. A deal the rest of them know nothing about. Mickey tells Mattie to mind her business. Mattie pressures Mickey into telling her about the deal, though Mickey tells her she has to trust her on it. At the same time, police sirens blare through the church. Mattie mentions that they couldn't destroy a church and not expect someone to notice. Darkhawk is glad; S.H.I.E.L.D. can now deal with Nekra. Julie becomes desperate to leave, but Johnny tells her not to worry; they are all registered. Julie becomes flustered... she reminds the group about how she was explaining about her lies and finally coming clean. Julie finally admits she is not registered.
Predictably, the rest of the room explodes with anger. Mickey snaps, Mattie makes a sarcastic remark, but Darkhawk is enraged. They've been harboring a fugitive, and she could have landed all of them in jail. Johnny defends Julie, and advises her to leave immediately. She should also take Namie with her, since none of them are ready to answer any of those questions. Again, Mattie tells the group she does not trust Namie. Mickey isn't sure either, but she did save her life - that counts for something. Darkhawk adds they don't have any other choice. Mickey tells Julie and Namie to leave while they get it sorted out with the cops; the two of them, however, are not of the hook. Julie picks up Namie and leaves... but not before telling Namie she is a lot heavier than she looks.
(In-and-Out Burger)
Julie eats a burger while Namie asks if there was any place more private they could wait. Julie does not mean to offend her, but she doesn't know who Namie is and she doesn't exactly trust her - there is no way she is taking her to her apartment or anywhere 'private.' Plus, she was starving. That doesn't mean she can't try and be nice to her. She offers Namie her burger, and asks when the last time Namie ate was. Namie is confused; she doesn't remember ever eating. Julie, intrigued, asks what is the last thing Namie does remember. Namie reflects on how the last thing she remembered was a woman's smile. Maybe her mother's. Her voice had said "We'll meet again soon enough." And then the lights went out. Next thing she knows, she was in the church basement with them, just in time to save Mickey's life with a power she doesn't know how to use. Julie admits it is all pretty convenient. Namie raises her metallic wristband and says she has no idea how to turn on the energy blade. Julie advises her not to try too hard... getting stabbed by one Fujikawa escapee (Hollow) in this lifetime's enough for her. Namie breaks down into tears and wonders what the Fujikawa labs did to her. Julie comforts her and assures her they will hook up with the rest of the group and figure things out. She asks if Namie's sure she wouldn't one just one bite of her burger. Namie smiles.
(The apartment of Phil Urich)
Phil, having left Excelsior's meeting after seeing Mickey and Chris kiss, is in his bathroom. Phil is breathing heavily, and is clutching the bathroom sink while in a sort of fit. His eyes are red. He tells himself he can fight it... he urges himself not to give in. Another voice, more darker speaks... out of Phil's own mouth. The second voice tells him there is nothing left for him. He's lost her. Phil tells himself not to listen to the second voice; Mickey still loves him. The second voice puts Phil down by telling him he is lying to himself. It is finally time to accept the truth. Phil has to admit; he's lost Mickey... and he's losing his mind. Madness truly does come to all those who don the mantle of the Green Goblin. And with that, the second voice calls, "embrace it!" The spirit of the Green Goblin manically laughs as it rushes through Phil, cracking the bathroom mirror. Phil, officially possessed by the spirit, gives a horrific laughter that scares a spying Hollow. Hollow instantly rushes to the living room and crawls up into a ball, in the corner, truly frightened.
(The apartment of Johnny Gallo)
Johnny enters his apartment after Mattie. He apologizes for the mess; he doesn't usually bring chicks back to his apartment on such short notice. Mattie, regardless, appreciates him letting her hang. She'll take looking at dirty laundry over sitting LA traffic anytime. Besides, this chick doesn't need short notice to school him on how to rock. She picks up his Guitar Hero. Johnny eagerly accepts the challenge, but tells her he needs to take a shower first - he still has Nekra stink all over him. Johnny tells her he'll be quick. The second Johnny steps into the shower, Mattie gets up to make sure he is occupied. She rushes to his bedroom and looks through all his drawers and mutters about how she knows Johnny is hiding something. It is at this point when Johnny arrives into the room wrapped in a towel. He asks Mattie what she's looking for. Mattie awkwardly searches for an excuse. She tells Johnny she was looking for... protection. She pulls Johnny to the bed, and Johnny asks no further questions
(Shortly after)
Mattie sits in Johnny's bathroom, bitterly thinking about how that wasn't her smartest move. A man named Mr. St. Commons calls her phone, and she answers it. She tells him she's in Johnny's apartment, and it's clean. There is no trace of her here. Mattie is sure; she examined every angle and looked under every rock. She assures Mr. St. Commons that Johnny Gallo hasn't had any contact with and doesn't know the whereabouts of his daughter. She apologizes for not finding the answer he was looking for. She hangs up. Staring at her reflection, she wonders what she got herself into. Stepping back out into Johnny's bedroom, she stares at him sleeping and worries about how awkward their situation will be.
(The apartment of Mickey Musashi)
Mickey sits on her couch... depressed. Chris, beside her, has his arm around her. Mickey whispers to him about how she almost died today. Chris reminds her that she didn't. She's still alive, here and well. Mickey tells him she is too young to die and Chris asks her why she is dwelling on it; they're super heroes - this stuff happens to them. They shake off near-death experiences and move on. "It's a part of the world we live in," says Chris. Mickey, now angry, shakes him off and repeats, "we." Exactly who are they? The cool kids who still have their powers? "Phil made it pretty clear he isn't a part of 'us,'" Mickey says. Standing up, she asks where exactly does she fit into all this; clearly, she isn't one of them. Chris is confused. By the time he stands up, he notices that Mickey is crying and Mickey confesses her angst. She was helpless. She stood their while Nekra was squeezing the life out of her and there was nothing she could do. No costume, no powers. End of story, and almost the end of her. Chris asks where all this is coming from; they are, after all, trying their best not to use their powers, to stay out of costume. Mickey asks if he really is trying.
Chris wraps his arms around her and tells her to stop. So she got a little shaken; she'll bounce back. But Mickey bitterly notes how they will bounce back. Fly back. And crawl back. Lucky them. Chris tells her she is the lucky one; she said it herself. Her powers came from her costume. So the costume is Turbo, not her. There were other Turbos before her, right? Mickey has the option of giving away her costume to someone else... she can walk away clean, start living a normal life again. That's a choice she can still make. A choice none of the rest of them have... but Mickey, disgusted, slaps Chris right across the face and calls him a hypocrite. Jabbing him in the chest, she tells him to take off the amulet. Rubbing his face, Chris is shocked. Mickey tells him to take off the Darkhawk amulet; it isn't melded to his chest. He can choose to take it off. So why doesn't he? Chris tells her she knows he can't. Mickey begins yelling at him; "can't, or won't?" Chris should practice what he preaches. Take off the amulet. Give it all up. Walk away. Fingering the amulet, Chris tells Mickey he can't do it. Darkhawk is a part of who he is. Is that what she wanted to hear? And Mickey reveals that right there is what this is all about. Before she can continue with her tirade, the doorbell rings.
As Mickey walks towards the door, she tells Chris not to think it's over just because everyone else is coming over. Chris tells her that as soon as everyone leaves, he wants to... but Mickey interrupts him, and tells him that their issue is about to become a group discussion. Opening the door, she finds Phil and Hollow. Phil is hiding his eyes, and has a hat lowered over his face. Mickey checks the halls and berates Phil for bringing Hollow in broad daylight. Phil storms into her apartment and tells her that he doesn't care. Some of them aren't afraid to hide what they truly are anymore. Grabbing him, she asks what the hell that is supposed to mean. If he has something to say, he should at least have the stones to say it to her face. Phil agrees, turns, and grabs Mickey by the throat. Phil mocks Mickey, and notes how she gets all fired up now that her boyfriend is here to protect her. His power has her blood pumping up, doesn't it? Mickey throws him off her and asks what the hell is wrong with him. Phil's glasses fall off, revealing his vivid red eyes.
Phil roars at Mickey and tells her that she is the one with the problem. They had a plan! Doesn't she remember? He got her a job at the Times and they were going to change the world. Put their pasts as teen super heroes behind them and start together. Together! They could do more good with their education than with their costumes. Isn't that what she had said? They were perfect for each other. But she couldn't keep her hand out of the cookie jar, could she. She had to go back for a little taste. Phil, breathing heavily, tells her that is why she really wanted to start the group. She needed to surround herself with people with powers to feel better about herself. And poor old normal Phil Urich just wasn't good enough for her, was he. Mickey tells Phil he's got it all wrong... they were friends, but she never felt that way about him. Phil slams his hand on a table, ordering Mickey not to lie to him. She used him, like she's using them. He loved her, but she led him on, making him believe they were alive when she really wanted to be just like the rest of them. But it's cool. Mickey wants power? Phil knows what to do to have her. He picks up a glass vase of flowers. Chris warns Phil to shut up, but Phil throws the vase at Chris' face, knocking him out.
Mickey screams while Hollow hisses, but Phil knows exactly what to do. He knows that Mickey isn't a "stop and smell the roses" kind of girl. He sees that now. She wants a guy who is willing to take matters into his own hands... and seize power for himself. With that, Phil rips the front of Chris' shirt and steals the Darkhawk amulet. Activating it, Phil stands before Mickey in the Darkhawk armor, laughing the maniacal laugh of a Green Goblin.
Notes:
The cover to issue five is a parody of Some Kind of Wonderful. Darkhawk is Eric Stoltz, Mickey is Lea Thompson and Phil is Mary Stuart Masterson.
Nekra says, "No Powers, No Problems." There is a scene in Runaways (2nd series) #10 when Chase is speaking with Nico and says, "Mo' Powers, Mo' Problems." This appears to be a reference to the Notorious B.I.G. song, "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems," from the album Life After Death (1997).
Mattie says "Namie and Nekra?! I'll take "evil sounding names that start with 'N' please, Alex." This is a reference to the popular quiz show, Jeopardy, whose host since 1984 has been Alex Trebek.
Namie is revealed next issue to be a new Red Ronin model. It is hinted at this issue when Julie says, "You're a lot heavier than you look."
Mattie calls Mr. St. Commons on the phone. He is Dusk's father. It appears that Mattie is looking for her. Dusk herself appears as a shadow on Johnny's wall.

An addiction to spandex is hard to kick. In this miniseries, the support group formerly known as Excelsior attempts to deal with their demons and steer clear of a dangerous MGH (Mutant Growth Hormone) ring that has shady connections to the seedy Fujikawa Industries, run by Fuyumi Fujikawa.
Character Appearances note: some characters appear only briefly, in flashbacks, and/or photographs.
