Chthon is an Elder God that resides in a nether dimension adjacent to the earthly plane. In his dimension he is omnipotent, having total control over every aspect of the dimensions reality
Chthon possess a mastery of magic on a greater scale than anyone in the known universe. His magical power is on a scale that defies description. He is the author of The Darkhold, an indestructible compilation of magical parchments.
His only limitation is that his body is a vessel of such vast power, that it would require an enormous dimensional rift for him to transport himself to earth's plane. Aside from just the sheer volume of power he would have to transport, his sister Gaea has erected protective screens around Earth's dimension to make it even harder for him to travel. Over the centuries sorcerers such as Doctor Strange have strengthened and added to these screens making travel to Earth's dimension exhaustive at best. It is much easier for Chthon to possess people from this dimensions souls than to try and cross himself. He can then use these minions as pawns to do his bidding across the dimensional void. A testimony to the enormity of Chthon's power is that these minions, once possessed, become extremely powerful beings themselves. One such example of Chthon's minions is the sorcerer Modred. Modred is virtually immortal and invulnerable to harm, despite the fact that he is receiving his power from Cthon from across an entire dimension.
Once Cython and Modred used the Scarlet Witch as a vessel, but the Avengers put a stop to his plans.
Modred recently freed Chthon from imprisonment against the wishes of Bova and offered Quicksilver's body up as a vessel for his soul to inhabit. In response The Scarlet Witch has brought together a new team of Avengers to combat him and restore the damage his rebirth has caused to the world.
