A Fresh Series To Chew On
Chew is about a detective named Tony Chu who becomes a F.D.A. agent because of his ability. He is a Cibopathic, which means that he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats, be it some type of food, or a human corpse. Tony Chu uses his special ability to help solve some of the strangest crimes.
My Thoughts:
Chew is created by John Layman (writer) and Rob Guillory (artist). This is definitely a truly unique series that has managed to grasp my attention from the first pages. I'm loving this series and can't wait to continue reading it. I don't think there is anything else out there quite like this.
Layman puts a fresh spin on this detective series with a dash of dark comedy that's sure to inspire a few laughs in all readers. Tony Chu is an easily likable character whose surface we've barely begin to crack. I think there's much more to this character than meets the eye. I'm eager to see what type of character development Layman provides us with in future issues.
Somehow I had the feeling that Mason Savoy (Tony Chu's partner) was going to be a dirty agent (and I didn't even have to take a bite out of anything). I don't know if other readers were getting that impression when reading as well. I don't think it was a bad move, but it was about the only predictable thing in this comic.
I feel there are so many directions this comic could go and that has me truly excited to read more. I hadn't heard of John Layman until now, but this has me wanting to check out his other work. I really enjoyed his writing on this series and hope he continues to deliver material of this caliber.
The art style is awesome in my opinion. Rob Guillory draws and colors his art to satisfaction. Some people may have a problem with the way some characters legs are drawn. The style is very cartoonish. You're either going to like it or not. I thought it was a nice fit for the story.
In March of 2011 it was announced that Showtime is developing Chew into a half-hour comedy series. No actors have been announced as of yet, but if the show is anything like the comics I know I'm going to be watching.
I would recommend this series for all mature comic readers. Cannibalism is involved, so take that into consideration. It's not like it's very graphic but it is one of the main components of the story. But if you're bold enough then grab a chair and a plate because after you Chew on this, you're bound to want seconds.
