Old case, new problem.
D-Bear and Tony deal with an old case that Tony, supposedly, closed a long time ago!
Right from the start we see John Colby dealing with his recent life choices. Of course, it was all a dream in the end, but with John's otherwise suspicious nature, it might turn into an investigation on him after a very important character's death that he caused! Writer John Layman did a good job at intriguing the readers to begin to look forward to see what will happen to John. Whether it'll be good or bad, it is too early to tell, however, it should put John an interesting position either way.
This issue's main story, of Tony and D-Bear revisiting an old case that involves a rich 1% club that loves to eat rare animals is the bulk of this issue. As things are still tense, with many of the main characters in the hospital, including Tony's daughter Olive, minor stories like this one seem to take away from what everyone really wants to see. Which is an update on the characters in the hospital or process on John dealing with the deceased [main] character. And while both said things are dealt with in a small degree in this issue, either one could have been focused on more. The case that Tony and D-Bear worked on is not at all interesting. Way back, when CHEW was still a brand new series, the club that's mentioned in this issue was the one that Tony took Amelia on a date to and eventually (what we thought) shut it down. But it's resurfaced and now acting as a c-list plot piece to kinda aid to the larger plot of things. Really all this case did for the larger story was get Tony outside of the hospital for the kidnapping, of Olive and Amelia, to happen while he was gone. So thankfully, this case has that one redeeming quality!
In conclusion, the beginning and the end of this issue were the best parts. However, the middle was really lacking in terms of engaging storytelling. Hopefully, the next issue is better and deals with the kidnapping at the end of this issue. 3 out of 5.
