    The Good

    The deadly Olive!
    The deadly Olive!

If there is only one thing you should take away from this issue, it is that Olive is primed and ready to take down, The Collector! (And that she's a stronger Cibopath than her father.) John Layman handled this issue really well because he caught readers up on what has been happening in Olive's life in the past couple of months. (Solely because she's been missing for quite a few issues.) Anyway, this entire issue goes into a bit of detail of Olive's training with Savoy and how her abilities as a Cibopath has grown greatly. I like seeing her character grow and how she's changed a lot from the little punk girl that we first saw way back in issue 13. (If I remember correctly. It might actually be 15.) Layman did an excellent job at inserting humor at the right moments in this issue (i.e. Tony Chu sent on useless missions and complaining about it; and Poyo's reaction to when Colby said to unleash 'America'.) This story is just really exciting and engaging and it keeps the reader alert all while reading. There was really good setup for the events of issue 44, but Layman ruined it by the end of this issue. (More on that below.) But other than that, CHEW is still going strong and is doing a good job with its story.

Rob Guillory's art, as always, is the right touch of violent, uniqueness, and awesome all wrapped up in one series. His art really breathes life into John Layman's story. life into John Layman's story.

    The Bad

Well, it looks like Olive is dead.
Well, it looks like Olive is dead.

The problem I had with this issue was the ending. At the ending of the issue, it appears to look like Olive gets killed in the next issue by, The Collector. (Not a cool move on writer John Layman's part.) Whether she dies or just gets critically injured, this was not needed! Layman had done a perfect job at creating this issue's story and setting it up for the events to come in the next issue, however he ruined it when he added the last scene of this comic with Olive getting her face slashed by The Collector. I've noticed that a lot of issues has done this in the past and it does ruin the experience when a particular moment in a series reaches the death of a character (for example.) I wish John Layman would stop doing this and just let events play out naturally and get the reader in a state of suspense, instead of creating suspense and then telling the reader how everything is going to turn out.

    The Verdict

4 out of 5. A great issue that had an excellent story and setup for the events of issue 44, but was ruined by John Layman's use of spoiling how things will end. You should still check out this issue and series though!
