CHEW 36
You didn't think we wouldn't see our old friend Toni again right?
The Good
Remember Toni's toe that Tony found in his freezer last issue? Well, now we know half of the chain of events that led to Toni chopping off her toe. These types of issues are probably my favorite. While I do enjoy what is going on in the present, I probably enjoy even more when John Layman takes a step backwards to give the readers clearer understanding on a plot point in the present.
To make things more understandable, this is not a one-shot issue or an unrelated problem of the past. This is in the CHEW continuity and serves to make the present story better. When Layman writes one of these issues, his focus is more tunnel vision. However in a good way. Usually in the present story, John Layman's thoughts are scattered to continue writing the present story however be throwing little easter eggs for story arcs that are down the road. That is not the case in these backtrack issues. When Layman begins writing one of these issues he doesn't throw out little easter eggs of story arcs that are down the road. The result when John Layman does this is an issue that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish.
There is no low point of this issue whatsoever. I believe that minor character, Sage Chu, helped make this issue really great as we learned what special food abilities she has and how she's connected to Tony and Toni's world.
The artwork by Rob Guillory is fantastic. There is nothing ever to complain about his art style.
The Bad
No complaints.
The Verdict
Check out this series you will not regret it! Overall 5 out of 5.
