Edward Gorey Makes Another Classic
Much like Road Dahl, Edward Gorey's work is often marketed for kids - despite the fact that neither of them were particularly fond of children, and often created stories of kids meeting all sorts of grisly ends.
Case in point: Cautionary Tales for Children. This book was first published around the turn of the century, and was originally illustrated by a friend of the author. It's similarity to Edward Gorey's own alphabetical rhymes about children dying did not go with notice, and Gorey created numerous drawings of the characters in Belloc's book. After Gorey's own passing in 2000 these images were attached to a reprint of the "children's" classic.
This edition credits Gorey with "rediscovering" this book in addition to doing the illustrations.
While not a cornerstone work by Gorey, it's worth searching out for fans.
