Cassandra Cain
Cassandra Cain is a comic book character that first appeared in Batman #567The daughter of Assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. Cassandra left her father at the age of 8 after she killed a man. Sometime later she saved Commissioner Gordon's life and was given the Batgirl costume/mantle by Batman and Oracle.
Conception
Cassandra Cain was conceived and trained with the intention of creating the perfect bodyguard for Ra's al Ghul.
After many unsuccessful attempts to train children from birth in the language of martial arts; David Cain, then a member of Ra's League of Assassins, decided that the answer lay not in a child but perhaps in the child’s “genetics”. He planned to create this "One Who Is All".
With Ra's permission Cain searched for the perfect mother for this child, and years later he would find her in the Woo-san sisters, Sandra and Carolyn. They resided in Detroit, and practiced martial arts with each other nearly every waking moment of their childhood in a type of ‘sister's language’. After killing the older of the two and enlisting the league’s aid in defeating Sandra, they conceived a baby girl for him saving her life.
The child would grow up with only David as Sandra went off to become lady Shiva. Cain loved his daughter dearly and saw in her a potential to surpass the league of assassins themselves.
Childhood
As she grew up she was trained by not just David Cain but Bronze Tiger, Merlyn the archer, Alpha the gun fu expert among others. She was also not taught to speak or read. Instead the parts of her brain normally used for speech were trained so she could read other people's movements and body language and predict , with uncanny accuracy, their next move. This also caused her brain to develop learning functions different from most, in a form of dyslexia that hampered her ability to read and write for years to come. Training her in a variety of secluded locations Cain recorded many of their sessions . When Cassandra was 5, Cain began taking her along on his hits so she could be cultured to accept death and killing as normal. At age 8 he decided she had progressed far enough to test her abilities in the real world of an assassin. He took her to a hit where she would hand out the killing blow; the target Faizul, would never see it coming. At the time however despite going along with her fathers wishes she had no idea what she was doing; she may have even believed it was only a game however after striking the deathblow, she "read" the target as he died and knew in intimate detail what it meant to take a life.
This experience left her scarred emotionally and she ran away from her father for what he had caused her to do. Cassandra spent the next nine years homeless as a wandering, mute drifter.
No Man's Land
Cassandra spent the next nine years homeless, beating herself up mentally over what she'd done as she traveled the world. Entering Gotham City at 17 Cassandra came to be one of Oracle's agents in the No Man's Land of Gotham City. After saving Commissioner Gordon's life from her assassin father, she was given the Batgirl costume with the approval of both Batman and Oracle. She became Barbara's ward and in a sense, the Batman's adoptive daughter. As the No Man's Land wore on the new Batgirl was introduced to the rest of the Bat family with varying levels of acceptance. Usually going out under the Batman's watchful eye she was finally allowed to go on a solo mission when a patrol station needed guarding against a local gang. Near the end of No Man's Land Batman noticed her death wish and forced her to make a decision between suicidal actions and self preservation. She opted for self preservation.
One Year Later
At the end of the Batgirl series featuring Cassandra, she gave up the Batgirl identity, but after One Year Later, she has appeared wearing it once again, this time as a villain in Titans East and the leader of the League Of Assassins.
Cassandra had even framed Robin for murder. It had been revealed that the super villain Deathstroke had drugged Cassandra Cain and kept her as his loyal subject. Thanks to the interaction of Robin and the Teen Titans, Cassandra was released from the influence of the drug and has reverted back to her original personality.
Redemption Road
After what happened with Deathstroke, and the titans east. Cassandra went on a man hunt for Slade and her father. She then found a name and went back to the batcave and ran into Nightwing and got into a fight. Batman and Robin arrived and stopped their conflict. She then left after her conversation with Batman and continued her search. Which led her to a factory where she ran into a masked woman named Marque. Cassandra and Marque eventually teamed up as they were both after David Cain and Slade Wilson. A no killing rule was established by Cassandra, but was promptly broken by Marque.
Soon after she and Marque "joined forces" they were caught by Ravager, who was also looking for her father, Slade Wilson. Again Cassandra was able to gain an ally and the three fought together against Marque and Cassandra's "sisters". They are working together to find Wilson and Cain. At the end of the story, Cassandra decides not to kill Cain and actually saves him. She is then adopted by Bruce Wayne and he tells her "as long as I'm alive you will have a home"
Outsiders
Cassandra joins the outsiders at the end of Batman and the Outsiders (vol.2) #2. Only for the team to fall apart during "Batman R.I.P". With the fall of the Outsiders Cassandra has been looking for super-humans whom are trying to redeem themselves to join a new incarnation of the Outsiders. As well as having certain abilities or aspects like the hero Batman. Alfred states it will be difficult and asks why Master Dick(Nightwing) is not in her line-up.
Cassandra replies he wouldn't understand. Nightwing appears after she leaves however and tracks her down. They do battle until both realize that they have the same goal. They part on amicable terms.
Some time later after Batman dies and Dick Grayson takes his place as Batman and leader of the batfamily, she retires as batgirl and hands over the costume and mantle to her best friend Stephanie Brown, she then disappears.
