A very nice surprise
Due to the striking cover the issue caught my eye, The colors are unlike most one sees on comic covers, and frankly the bandaged man in wayfarer glasses and crows flying overhead made me pull the trigger. Knowing little of Matt Fraction and only having seen Fabio Moon's art in Day tripper, the highly recognizable names meant little to me. The art is fantastic and kept me reading and interested to the very end, even though I didn't know the back story. The writing technique was very interesting; an original way to write a comic. I have since picked up Gula I, II, and III, and to be honest I still do not "get" the story, BUT I find my self thinking of this issue at random moments through out the day, and I am even compelled to tell friends who have no interest in comic books about certain aspects of the story, art, and ideas demonstrated. I wouldn't recommend this issue for someone who isn't familiar with the back story, but I found myself wanting to read more.
