Heck yes!

Of all the considered candidates, this was the worse possible choice. Ms. Marvel--Binary--Ms Marvel--Captain Marvel? I think not.

This July, Carol Danvers, once known as Ms. Marvel, will take on the legacy of a legendary hero in CAPTAIN MARVEL, a new ongoing series by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Dexter Soy.

“My pitch was called ‘Pilot’ and the take can pretty much be summed up with ‘Carol Danvers as Chuck Yeager,’” says DeConnick. “Carol's the virtual definition of a Type A personality. She's a competitor and a control freak. At the start of our series, we see Carol pre-Captain Marvel, pre-NASA even, back when she was a fiercely competitive pilot. We'll see her meeting one of her aviation heroes and we'll see her youthful bravado, her swagger. Then over the course of the first arc we're going to watch her find her way back to that hungry place. She'll have to figure out how to be both Captain Marvel and Chuck Yeager—to marry the responsibility of that legacy with the sheer joy being nearly invulnerable and flying really [expletive] fast.Sporting a revamped costume to compliment the codename, Danvers not only faces unfamiliar dangers and challenges, but also delves into her own history as well as that of the late Kree soldier Mar-Vell, the first person to operate as Captain Marvel.

“My playlist for this series is heavy on AC/DC, Heart and Pat Benatar.”

The series will reflect on what the legend of Captain Marvel means to the long-time heroine, what she will do with it and what the rest of the Marvel Universe thinks of her new role.

“Carol has an incredible respect for Mar-Vell, as a person and as an icon,” notes DeConnick. “She is hesitant to take the name because of that. The line is something like, ‘So much has been taken from him. I won't take his name.’ It's on Captain America to help her understand that Captain Marvel wasn't his name, it was his mantle. And he would have wanted her to have it.

“As for the rest of the Marvel Universe, well, I expect the opinions probably vary person to person, but I imagine the overwhelming attitude would be one of, ‘What took her so long?’”

“I'm trying to strike the right balance defining her powers: what they are and what the limitations they come with,” she says. “[AVENGERS writer] Brian Michael Bendis did a great job focusing in on the fact that she is basically able to absorb and metabolize radiant energy. She weaponizes that in the form of photon blasts—expelling energy—and uses a similar process in order to fly.”The writer reports that Carol Danvers’ quest into the mysteries of her past takes a toll on her Avengers membership and that repercussions may be in store on that account. The new Captain Marvel’s power levels and particulars will also be addressed in the series.

In all, CAPTAIN MARVEL promises a new adversary that DeConnick calls “complex and unexpected,” new allies and “one friendly face from the distant past.” The writer also looks forward to her collaboration with artist Dexter Soy.

“I've never worked with a painter before,” she says. “It adds a weight, a significance—it makes everything feel epic. It's awesome.”

Cool, but who was the guy on the cover of Secret Avengers then?

#6 Posted by Duncan (11440 posts) - - Show Bio

It's cool that she's Captain Marvel but she looks terrible.

#7 Posted by ReVamp (22863 posts) - - Show Bio

I don't like. At all.

#8 Posted by ReVamp (22863 posts) - - Show Bio

Let me reiterate.

  • Carol Getting a book: Yes
  • Carol's Costume: No.
  • Carol being Captain Marvel: No.

@The Dark Huntress: Wait, it says 2013 on the bottom of the panel? Regardless, I love Dexter's art.

@ReVamp: I have no idea why they went for that design, it's not very iconic looking like it should be

The art looks strange and may take some getting used to for me. I don't like the headdress they've given her. But I'm strongly in favor of this book. I love Carol, and I really hope this book earns her success as a character.

@spiderbat87: Ditto.

I love the art just not the costume but regardless I'll be getting this book when it's out

Cover art by Ed McGuinness. Much prefer without the headgear.

I like what I'm seeing.

Hate the costume change and the short hair sucks on her. I didn't realize how much her long hair was a part of her character until it was gone.

The name change I don't like. She spent years making a name out of Ms Marvel now she is going to change it to someone else's. Seems like a step back for me.

I am glad she is getting her own book though.

Her new costume is alright. Glad she's getting an ongoing again. Who knows, if this turns out any good I might be finally following a book from Marvel...

Made only for financial gain and an ugly costume. That sums it up.

Looks like I'll be picking this series up.

Not true. Ugliness is in the eye of the beholder. I'm excited for this.

OH MY F-ING GOD!!! That looks AWFUL!!! (the new look I mean)

@War Killer said:

I would have rather her gone back to her original look as it was based off of Mar-Vell's costume anyways.
Ms.Marvel #39

THIS! That was a great look, it would have been 1000x better.

First DC messed up with Power Girl's new look (outfit AND face) and now Marvel does the same with Ms. Marvel!

Two of my favorite female characters!

Looks good. Not sure if I'll actually read it, though.

Will she be wearing the Nega Bands?

BOOOOOO! Noh-Varr is Captain Marvel.

Costume aside, I look forward to this book. She has to be one of my favorite heroines, tied with Wonder Woman. Kelly seems to have a strong hold on what she wants Carol to be and I have faith. Final judgement arrives in July. Until than I'm pumped!

Yes...heaven forbid not every female has the entirety of her legs show or is flashing some T&A. Eyeroll

Costume doesn't suck it's her hair and that stupid sash that suck.

#39 Posted by CATPANEXE (9368 posts) - - Show Bio

Seems a convoluted move, but I've been moaning about wanting a book with Carol again, and I approve of the creative team so it's on my list.

Personally I like the new look, it's very striking. In with the new out with the old.

Thank you for the heads up DH.

I'm actually surprised people aren't freaking out that she's wearing pants. Personally I could careless if she has skin showing or not (if I had to choose though I'd rather something less revealing though) I just feel like the new look is such a departure from her current look. I can get use to her hair being short (plus it's not like other artist can't draw her with long hair again) I just don't think her new suit is that interesting looking, doesn't look anything like Captain Marvel's or Carol's original costume and it just seems like random colors thrown together with a Capt. Marvel symbol slapped on the front. I do agree with others though that I do prefer her without the full-face mask.

Hopefully her new series will change my mind about some of these changes.

Carol being Cpt. Marvel: Don't care. Carol's new look: Turrible. Artwork: Turrible (or maybe just weird for me). *scrawls "THAT'S TURRIBLE" over the page*

I'm not sure if that's enough buttons on her gloves....

#43 Posted by hectorsquall (1137 posts) - - Show Bio

@Nerx: Thank God, I'm not the only one who see the horrible truth!

@The Dark Huntress: I think you and some others should stop assuming that all the people complaining about the new look are pervert who only think about women's legs, boobs, ass... of fictional characters. A female character can be strong, confident and sexy without having to look like a drag queen or a a refugee from the worst part of the 80s.

Yes, it's a good news that Carol has his own book again, it doesn't mean that they should ruin her image like that.

I really, really hope that it's just bad art and that another artist could draw her better, but I'm used to being disappointed when it comes to my favorite characters :(

It is exciting to see that there will be at least one female solo lead book coming from Marvel... wish there were more, but I suppose I get that already elsewhere... I'll admit that I'm not hugely awed by the costume design, but I'll give it the shot in action (and with time) before I judge it harshly...

@The Dark Huntress said:

While I hold to not liking the initial depiction, I'm rather happy to say that this is not the source of the negative elements of my reaction... mostly I'm not fond of the hair or the yellow double line thing (sorry, fashion is not my strong point so I have trouble articulating). I think the sash can work, but I think for a dynamic action piece it'll work best loose and dangling. The hairstyle itself isn't the problem even, just... something there. Both cover and interior work. The longer braided hair looks just fine... the pixie-style cut can be very striking but it seems... off. Hopefully with time.

I'm not 100% sold on the book at this point... I've never been a (Marvel) Captain Marvel fan, nor all that much of a Carol Danvers fan. But there certainly seem to be many who've been anxiously awaiting this book, so I wish it the best of success. I've enjoyed what I've read of DeConnick's work.
