Hero From Another Planet

Man From Space

Mar-Vell was part of a rare breed of Kree where they have pinkish or even white skin instead of the traditional light blue skin that most Kree have. Despite being a minority of his race, Mar-Vell became a well known soldier in the Kree Empire in their attempts to take down their enemy, the Skrull.

Mar-Vell was given orders to watch the Earth, by his commander Yon-Rogg. During this time Mar-Vell and his ship's medic, Una, fell in love. Yon-Rogg became angered by their love and ordered Mar-Vell to invade Cape Canaveral, Florida. Yon-Rogg then tried to fire on Mar-Vell but instead killed a bystander named Dr. Walter Lawson. Mar-Vell decided to take Dr. Lawson's name as his secret identity. But Yon-Rogg was not done trying to kill Mar-Vell, as he sent the Kree Robot, The Sentry, to kill him. Mar-Vell defeated The Sentry in his Kree Uniform, but during the battle bystanders misunderstood the robot thinking it called him "Captain Marvel", a new superhero.

Mar-Vell continued to live on Earth, under the identity Dr. Lawson and as Captain Marvel. The more time he spent on Earth, the more he came to love it and its people. Around this time Mar-Vell met and fell in love with Carol Danvers.

New and Improved

New Uniform

Mar-Vell met a being named Zeo, who granted him new powers. Zeo was actually an illusion though, created by Zarek and Ronan. Their hope was to trick Mar-Vell into destroying the Kree homeworld, Kree-Lar. This is when Mar-Vell became a traitor to the Kree Empire, but was set straight when the Supreme Intelligence uncovered Zarek and Ronan's plans. This is when the Supreme Intelligence told Mar-Vell that he knew of their plans all along but allowed it to go on as a "test" for Mar-Vell, due to him having plans for Mar-Vell.

The Supreme Intelligence allowed Mar-Vell to keep his abilities and granted him a new Costume. But on his way back to Earth, Mar-Vell became trapped in the Negative Zone. His only chance of freedom was for Rick Jones to put on the Nega-Bands and slam them together. By doing this Mar-Vell and Rick Jones would switch places. About this time, Yon-Rogg kidnapped Carol Danvers, but was easily defeated by Mar-Vell. Yon-Rogg died after the battle in an explosion that Mar-Vell and Carol narrowly escaped.

After many adventures, Mar-Vell got the idea to use Mr. Fantastic's portal to the Negative Zone to bring Rick Jones out. By doing this the two were both able to be side by side on Earth. Shortly after, Rick Jones and Mar-Vell were stuck in the middle of the Kree/Skrull War alongside the Avengers. The Supreme Intelligence released the potential that Rick Jones had in him. Using this power Jones was able to stop the war by himself. But due to this Rick Jones was dying and the only way to save him was for Mar-Vell and him to share the bond they once had. But after awhile Rick Jones could no longer contain this bond. But his girlfriend's uncle was able to use a photonic energy on Jones. After this they were able to keep switching places and Mar-Vell could absorb solar energy and use it to fire blast and increase his strength.

Protector of the Universe

Mar-Vell found himself fighting against the alien Thanos. This is when the being known as Eon, made Mar-Vel "Protector of the Universe" and granted him his "cosmic awareness". After this Mar-Vell became the driving force in stopping Thanos. After awhile, Rick Jones and Mar-Vell were once again able to break the bond they share although they needed to do it every once in awhile to restore Mar-Vell's powers to its fullest.

When Commander Zarek commanded the Lunatic Legion, he ordered Nitro to steal a canister of Nerve Gas. Mar-Vell stopped Nitro and was able to close the canister before anyone else was exposed to the gas. Although he didn't realize it at the time, Mar-Vell had been exposed to the gas himself, which would later have grave consequences. Mar-Vell defeated the Lunatic Legion and went back to the Kree Homeworld to tell the Supreme Intelligence of their plans. The Supreme Intelligence once again knew of the enemy plots, and said that he had chosen Mar-Vell for his gentic make-up and Rick Jones for his psychic potential. This is when the Supreme Intelligence tried to absorb Jones's and Mar-Vell's brains, but Mar-Vell and Rick Jones were able to fight it and Mar-vell left the Kree Empire for good.

Death of Captain Marvel

In Death's Arms

The Nerve Gas that Mar-Vell had been exposed to during his battle with Nitro began to take a toll on his body. He slowly developed cancer, and when he no longer had the strength to carry on, he went to Titan, where he spent his last remaining days. He was visited by many of the Marvel universes greatest heroes, most of whom looked to him for inspiration. Mar-Vell led the life of a great warrior. He battled many powerful enemies, and truly made the universe a better place. In the end, there was no grand battle, he did not die in the midst of a great explosion; the warrior's death that he, more than so many, deserved was stolen from him by what his people call the "Black Death", and he passed from the world in silence. After his death, Mar-Vell was made an honorary Avenger, and the Kree government finally acknowledged him not as a traitor, but as a great hero of their people.

The Return of Captain Marvel

He's Back

During Marvel's Civil War, Tony Stark, built a prison in the Negative Zone. During this process, they created a wrinkle in Space and Time. Mar-Vell in the past found this wrinkle and became transported into the future. The present day heroes told Mar-Vell of his death and offered him a place as warden of the prison.

During the final battle of the Civil War, Mar-Vell decided to come out to help Pro-Registration. But once he got to the battle, he hated what he saw what this world had become and flew off. The only person who saw him was Spider-Man who thought it was another clone, like Thor. After the events of WWH, the news got a glimpse of what appeared to be Mar-Vell and thought that he had returned from the dead somehow. Other citizen's of New York City thought he was a savior and created "The Church of Hala" for him. Mar-Vell made his way to France where he battled the villain Cyclone. After defeating him, S.H.I.E.L.D. finally located Mar-Vell in France where they sent one of their agents to talk with him. He told her he would have a better chance getting him to go back if they sent Sentry after him. So she left, but Mar-Vell realized that part of his memory was missing from right before he came to the Future. Mar-Vell decided he needed Iron Man's help figuring out why he is in the future so went to find the Avengers. When he arrived in New York, the Avengers were in a battle with a giant robot and losing. Mar-Vell quickly defeated the robot with one attack and made his return known to the World.

Father and Son

After revealing his return to the world, Cap Marvel's son, Hulking, wants to meet his long lost father for the first time. Hulkling reveals that he is Mar-Vell's son and that his mother was the Skrull Princess. Cap isn't sure how to take the news, and so he tells Hulkling he will return later. Eventually the two meet up again, and Hulkling breaks into tears cause he doesn't want Cap to return to his own time. Captain Marvel gives Hulkling a hug and tells him he is proud of him. And then the two go their own ways, maybe forever.

Secret Invasion

Spoilers

After making his himself known to the world, Mar-Vell stayed at Stark Towers waiting for a meeting for Iron Man. Eventally he met up with Ms. Marvel, and the two were attacked by the dead villian, Cobolt Man. Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel defeat Cobolt Man and put him in lock up. Mar-Vell was then suppost to meet Iron Man on a S.H.I.E.L.D. Hellicarrier. The two were attacked by what they thought were Kree Soldiers, but they soon found out they were Skrulls. Mar-Vell went to see Ms. Marvel, and the two figured out that Cobolt Man was actually a skrull. Mar-Vell went to talk to him and Cobolt Man revealed his true Skrull form. He also told Mar-Vell that he isn't Captain Marvel.

Mar-vell finds himself confused that he might possibly be a Skrull named Khn'nr. Meanwhile, Tony Stark sends SHIELD Agents to Titan to dig up Mar-Vell's body. Not knowning what to do Mar-Vell turns to the Church of Hala to finds answers about what he should be doing. Mar-Vell joins their leader, Julia Starr, to Sudan to help the people that live there. But while having a conversation with her, a bomb exploded and killed her. Mar-Vell went on a rampage and started destroying every weapon around, saying that he would save Earth, even from itself. Tony Stark, knows he couldn't let him continue his rampage and so he gives Carol Danvers a set of the Nega-Bands, possibly from the dead Mar-Vell body, so she could trap Mar-Vell in the Negative Zone until SHIELD can contain him.

Mar-Vell is apparently plucked out of space/time after his battle with Nitro but before he starts to show signs of his illness. Although he appears healthy, Mar-Vell is made aware that his body harbors the cancer that will one day kill him. Nevertheless, Mar-Vell dons his Nega Bands in order to serve as the warden of the new Negative Zone prison. He is later called in to help the Pro-registration heroes who revived him, in the final battle of the Civil War; however upon seeing the chaos they are causing, he departs, to France, where he spends all of his time observing a painting of Alexander the Great in the Louvre and contemplates Alexander's similarities to himself. He is eventually called back to action, first to defend the museum from the supervillain known as the Cyclone who he readily kills, for murdering several people. He is eventually tracked down by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Heather Santos, who tells him Tony Stark wants to have him return to his own timeline, and persuades him to take action. He then returns to New York, where he helps the Avengers defeat a giant robot. Simultaneously a woman he saved during the final battle of the Civil War, starts a cult which worships Mar-Vell, under the assumed name of Mother Starr.

It has been implied that this Captain Marvel may in fact be a Skrull; at the same time that Skrull infiltrators strike S.H.I.E.L.D., S.W.O.R.D., the Baxter Building and a number of Stark Enterprises facilities, "Mar-Vell" launches an attack on Thunderbolt Mountain. Brian Reed has stated that an eight-page story within the one-shot Secret Invasion: Who Do You Trust? will shed some light on what has happened to Mar-Vell between the final issue of his limited series and both Secret Invasion #1 and Thunderbolts.

It was confirmed that "Mar-Vell" was formerly a Skrull named Khn'nr, who received memory implants. Due to an error in the methods of Skrull scientists, the personality of Mar-Vell as well as all of Mar-Vell's memories prior to his Skrull captivity were retained in their entirety even after the psychological trigger was activated which was supposed to return him to his Skrull persona. It was further explained that most of Khn'nr's personality had accidentally been erased as a byproduct of the botched mental conditioning. Consequently, the Mar-vell persona remained defiantly dominant. When he learned the truth he decided to rebel against the Skrulls and protect Earth from their invasion.

Powers and Abilities

Photon Blast

Mar-Vell had the ability to absorb solar energy. By doing this, he was able to greatly increase his strength. It also gave him the ability to fly and to fire blasts of energy from his body. Captain Marvel was "cosmically aware", meaning that he was semi-omniscient. He could see an enemy's weakness simply by thinking about it, and had superhuman intelligence.

Thanks to the Nega-Bands, Mar-Vell became able to store much more solar energy and focus his photon blast. By hitting the Nega Bands together, Mar-Vell was able to switch places with Rick Jones, who resided in the Negative Zone.

Mar-Vell was a captain in the Kree Army. In the military, he received advanced training in hand-to-hand combat as well as armed combat with a multitude of weapons. He also had a firm understanding of warfare and was an apt tactician.
