After a failed mission left him encased in ice for decades, he was found and revived by the Avengers, later joining their ranks and eventually becoming the team's leader.

    i think he could work not sure how powerful he actually is.. is he like slade or above like spiderman lvl power strength?

    not much, I've watched a couple of DC / Marvel crossovers in a Non-Crossover, for example.
     
     

    thats the last page of an old nightstalkers issue, superman died around that time (MARVEL)

    You are absolutely right; a full year earlier to be exact.  However, it is a fair statement to make that he never had the success of Captan America.  The only reason he is being retconned for today is an attempt to compete with Cap and his very recent Second Coming.  Over the last 5years or basically Ed Brubaker's run on Captain America he breathed new life into the character steadily increasing his fan-base every month.   
     
    The Shield could be good.  I will honestly never givve it a shot.  I am enjoying Cap too much right now.
