Both of these CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER casting choices have been rumored about for a while now but now Marvel’s finally made 'em official with a couple press releases. Tommy Lee Jones is playing Colonel Chester Phillips, the military man who picked a scrawny and frustrated 4H who’d just been rejected from service and turned him into a super-solider. Howard Stark, Iron Man’s father, will also appear in the movie, but it’s not going to be the same actor who played him in IRON MAN 2. Instead of John Slattery, audiences will be seeing Dominic Cooper playing a younger Stark. His biggest roles so far have been in THE DUCHESS and the Abba musical, MAMMA MIA!
Okay… everybody can breath now. I think that ought to be the last casting announcements for the CAP movie and it couldn’t come a day sooner. Comic Book Movie’s saying it just started shooting yesterday. They’re going to have been burning the candle at both ends for this one - - it’s locked into a July 22, 2011 release and that’s just a little more than a year away! == TEASER ==
Reading in to how these guys are getting individual announcements, I get the sense that there’s going to be a little more significance to their appearances than just simple bit parts. They’ve already established that Howard Stark was a founder of SHIELD and that he designed Cap’s shield (probably with some compound as that Vibranium-like element that saves Iron Man’s life in movie #2.) And then they’ve also established, of course, that Nick Fury and papa Stark were pals. I can’t help wondering if they’re going to go with a “benevolent conspiracy” angle and have this brain trust of big thinkers serving as an Illuminati-secret society that’s purposely creating this generation of heroes (to combat a Skrull invasion?) by starting the Operation: Rebirth, the Gamma research project and... * GASP * ...maybe even instigating the conditions that created Iron Man? That would certainly lay down the kind of latticework between these movies that Marvel's been talking about.
What do you Comic Vine maniacs figure? Is that plausible? Would it be interesting? Or am I turning into some kind of conspiracy nut and reading too far into things?
