He might not have gotten cast as Steve Rogers ultimately, but that doesn’t mean Neal McDonough won’t be in THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA. According to Deadline, he’s been cast as Dum Dum Dugan, of all characters. If you’re not familiar with him, he’s been Nick Fury’s right hand man since World War II, following him from the Howling Commandos to SHIELD. At one point, I think he was even director of SHIELD.
I’m intrigued. I’ve liked McDonough in anything I’ve seen him in since RAVENOUS, so I’m glad he’ll be joining the cast. However, I’m curious over how much of a make-over this clean cut leading man type’s going to get to better resemble Dugan, whose most notable physical attributes are his gut and his fiery red mustache. Do you figure McDonough will be packing a pillow under his shirt to properly convey that? Also, more pressing to the story - - does Dugan’s inclusion means that the Howling Commandos will be in this movie? If so, will Sam “Nick Fury” Jackson be leading them? And, if that’s the case, then this movie’s going to be a lot more packed than I really ever expected it to be, since the Commandos would be joining the Invaders, Bucky and Arnim Zola IN ADDITION to the three leads. That’s a lot of characters for an origin movie.
Also, having received serious backlash for my brief sporting of a mustache a few months ago, I’ll give Dum Dum Dugan kudos for taking a stand against modern fashion and continuing to rock the ‘stache for all these years. Hell, this might even be a good discussion starter - - how many superheroes outside of Tony Stark, Dr. Strange and Hercules are still working facial hair?
