How well would Captain America work in DC?

#1 Posted by Gottheit (3473 posts) - - Show Bio

Did I actually post my topic? A big ol' 500 happened when I tried, did it eat up the content?

Just in case I didn't:

Let's pretend that Captain America had his whole history in the DC Universe, instead of Marvel. Do you think he'd be a relevant figure, or would he be overshadowed by Superman? If he had a place on the JLA, do you think he'd be as important as members like Batman or Wonder Woman?

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Well, DC already had their prominent American patriot, Star-Spangled Kid, who was fairly popular for the time.

Right, but that's an entirely different character, right? I'm not too experienced with her, does she have the charisma or tactical ability that he does?

If she does, that's totally awesome, and I should look for stuff involving her. Probably a bunch of JSA adventures.

He could work if he was written in well, I would like to see the relationship/rivalry between Steve and Bruce Wayne.

I bet he'd renounce his citizenship when DC needed a boost in sales :p

@ntb1124: Actually in the Amalgam cross over Cap and Batman fought and one of them made some comment in regards to that.

I could totally see him joining the JSA or become Superman's pal... I don't think he'd really want to involve himself with Batman unless the Red Skull & Joker try to team up (which failed horribly for both bad guys in that Batman/Captain America crossover)

@Dracade102: He'd probably be more prone to join the Freedom Fighters

Cap and Uncle Sam would team up to kick extensive amounts of ass

@Gottheit
I think the reference to Star Spangled Kid was the golden age version in which case the Kid was a man.

As for your original question, it is kind of hard to conceive, but I don't see why not, as long as he maintained his identity and decent writing behind him.  Neither Batman nor superman ios all that much like Captian America.  I think all three would see eye to eye though.

He'd work great but Batman would cry for a month because Cap's a better fighter and would get along better with Superman.

Captain America & SGT. Rock 40's.
Captain America and the Freedom Fighters! 60's
Doom Patrol: Guess Staring Captain America!
Captain America: Apart of The JLA? 60's-00's
World's Finest: Captain America, Superman, Wonder Woman(If she feels like it) and Batman.00's-now.

Agree with everything except the last part. No need for him.

Supes would overshadow him at every turn.

LOL. Exactly my thoughts

As it was said, DC did have the Star Spangled Kid, but IMO Superman has the role of Captain America in DC (a leader who people turn to for hope with a solid head on his shoulders) so I'm glad Captain America is in the Marvel Universe

Supes would lose popularity and Cap would be one of DCs top sellers.

@gravitypress: Yep. Because he isn't an alien, he truly is....AMERICAN MADE!!!!!!!!!!

He was a kid. His sidekick was a man, he was also the first DC to headline a comic Star-spangled comics, but he did not sell well and was moved into a secondary feature role..

I think he'd work well. He's definitely more likeable than Batman, that's for sure.

Personality wise, anyway.

@turoksonofstone: Oops, I wasn't clear maybe, the other poster thought the Star Spangled Kid was a female, I just meant to say the original was a male.

Remember JSA retired because House Un-American Activities Committee forced them to give up their secret identities? Imagine Captain America standing up to HUAC to defend their rights... and ending with Superhero Civil War at 1950s.

Isn't the shield essentially a modern cap?

Wonder Woman wouldn't be a part of the trinity. Superman wouldn't overshadow him, he would bring something else to the table.
Captain America, Superman, Batman

@ntb1124: I would see it as bruce wayne taking the place of tony stark in the civil war...they would probably be the 2 duking it out...stark is the marvel version of wayne...no super powers but uses money to become super

I think Cap and Superman would be best friends.

Captain America is a symbol for America in the Marvel Universe. IN everything he does he has a principle behind it and for that he stands out even though he was frozen in time. This is the reason he succeeds as a character in Marvel and why he is such a leader. He is the granddaddy of super heroes and superheroes look up to him. I think his relationship with Superman would be much like Thors as both superman and Thor are powerful beings who thrive on their own Sense of responsibility. But also because they are suspect of anyone and so their trust has to be earned through battle rather than just through works. Batman is such a dark character that him and Cap would clash the way he and Wonder Woman do. He does things around the law and around principles while Cap follows what he believes is the right thing to do.

@Gottheit: To be honest, everyone is overshadowed by Batman and Superman. I think DC would have spent a lot of time trying to make him relevant in the last several years though, like they have with every other character who is neither Batman nor Superman.
