YES! They absolutely HAVE to change the costume. I mean, come on; tights, wing ears, ruby-red gloves and pirate boots? Feh! Everybody but the hardcore fans would never stop laughing.
Basically, Cap's a soldier, he needs to have that as the primary focus of the uniform. It needs to be functional and practical, no tights. NO TIGHTS! The Earth-1610 version is almost perfect for a WW2 epic (though I don't the need the big "A" on his forehead ads anything other than the assumption his fellow soldiers are at a 1st grade reading level). When he wakes up in the present, though... I dunno. Gotta modernize that somehow.
I've talked to people who were mad that they changed Batman's costume for the movies. They thought a blue speedo on top of grey tights and hooker boots was the way to go. I kinda see this as the same deal. There are going to be fanboys who will hate any changes made, the trick is to tune those people out, because they ruin everything.
Yeah I mean as much as I like Cap's regular costume I can see how it would not work in a movie like Thor's classic look wouldn't work.
It would be okay to change it for an alternate version of event, something like that. But I'm not a big fan of changing the looks of icons.

I've always thought that when Marvel makes a movie, they'll always use the Ultimate Universe as reference(costumes), since it's more realistic. Captain America wearing his 616 costume would be like Wolverine wearing his yellow spandex costume, which isnt something everybody wants. So, thanks for the Ultimate Universe.
" His Ultimate uniform would workI definitely think this look would work. Either this look or something similar to the one on the new Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
"
Since the majority of the Cap movie is supposedly going to take place during WW2, the WW2 ultimate look would work. But I always pictured Cap's outfit, if he was real, as more of a propaganda piece when he's on the home front trying to sell war bonds, yet when he is out on the battlefield he is wearing the same OD green uniform the other soldiers wear, with slight modifications, so he doesn't stand out that much to enemy snipers and spotters.
