Ed Brubaker brings us the 50th issue of Captain America with a great character study on the current Captain America, Bucky Barnes. From the outside you can assume that its hard to keep a title like this going without Steve Rogers, but Brubaker has made Barnes a flawed but worthy successor as he struggles with is past while defending freedom. This story mostly consists of Bucky (I'm not ready to call him Captain America) reminiscing on past birthdays at different major turning points in his life against the backdrop of a battle with some technologically advanced radicals. The action is pretty good, but the real meat of the book Brubaker's brilliant characterization of Bucky and his evolution from regular boy, to hero, to killer to hero again. You really identify with him and his acceptance that is no replacement for Steve Rogers, but his willingness to carry the mantle fo the common good. The stregnth of this title has always been the characters' humanity and this issue another great example. Luke Ross' penciling and coloring with Rick Magyar really bring the story to life with realistic and almost cinematic tones.
In additon to the excellent main story, there is a well done synopsis of Steve Roger's career as a superhero by Marcos Martin and this is just one more feature that makes this issue a must read for anyone regardless of whether or not you are a longtime reader or new fan. Go buy this one

The issue is more or less a look back at Buckys life up till now. It starts off with him being attacked by a group of flying armored men with heat seeking missiles and then he mentions that today is his birthday. Then it goes into some neat flashbacks of Buckys life before he met the Cap and in the final days of the war with Cap. The issue ends with a bunch of the Avengers throwing him a birthday party, then a comment is made about how Bucky has "gotta be at least Eighty or something" then you see a big cake. Next issue is # 600!
Also in this issue was a little 14 page summary of the Captain America comics that just hit the major points of the series.
