In iron man 2 fury does say too stark "you hasn't tried them all" when referring to the fact that stark was trying new materials to replace the original material for his ark reactor. Maybe that is what he was referring too.
@Chaos Burn: actually, i thought the SAME thing while i was in the theatre, that maybe Tony's day some how got a hold of the cube and tried to replicate it's power which eventually led to the arc reactor
@Chaos Burn: The element isn't vibranium, they don't have the same properties
On another note, I think the cosmic cube was also at the end of the Thor movie, I assume that it was found along with Captain America, so logically Howard Stark wouldn't have been able to analyse it and discover the "new element" - but I guess it's possible the two are related.
