Year of the Vengeance
Remember when Magneto kicked the Red Skull's ass and then buried him alive? Well, in the aftermath of Acts of Vengeance, both Captain America and Crossbones are on a hunt for the missing Red Skull in Red Twilight by Mark Gruenwald and Ron Lim.
Yep, last time we left Captain America was when the Red Skull was beaten and thrown into a dark hole by the revenge-seeking Magneto and it seems so long ago. But despite all the tie-ins to Acts of Vengeance I've read since then and the Avengers having found time to defeat Loki and his cabal, apparently it was barely even a day ago these events transpired with Crossbones and Machinesmith investigating the destruction left by Magneto in search of their boss. Nobody can find Magneto, the only man who knows where the Red Skull is, because he's busy having kidnapped his daughter. Magneto's absence isn't just stirring up those hunting for the Red Skull but also the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club and the Serpent Society.
This issue is kinda mostly set-up for the hunt for the Red Skull which will feature heavily in the next two issues and we don't really get to see much else. Well, that's a lie we have a weird fight scene between Captain America and "Magneto" but the rest is mostly getting characters in place for the next issue. This issue is very much geared towards the plot and there's not too many character moments going on.
But it's not a bad issue. The Magneto/Red Skull rivalry was one of the great parts of the Acts of Vengeance event and this issue deals with a lot of the fallout from Magneto's attack on the Skull. Despite the cover, we don't really get to see much Magneto in this issue and we see no Red Skull (except for a flashback). This one is all about those characters who are affected by Magneto's attacks, from Captain America and Crossbones to Diamondback and Selene. A readable issue, but mostly set-up for what is to come.
