Off My Mind: How Will Cable be REBORN?

Cable died during Second Coming. He sacrificed himself for the cause of saving the mutant messiah, Hope, who he raised and taught how to survive. Cable's life has never been easy as he was infected with the techno-organic virus as an infant. Being swept away to the future by the Clan Askani in order to ensure his survival, he's fought battle after battle against Apocalypse and others. When he finally revealed himself in the present, he continued his crusade against the forces of evil.

Cable has been a soldier his entire life and scarifying himself was an easy decision to make. Because we're talking about a comic book death and because he is part of the X-Men, dying is something that can be easily overcome. It has been officially announced that Cable will be returning, or be reborn, in December when Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness take on the task of bringing him back.

With deceased characters in comics constantly being resurrected, it shouldn't be too difficult to come up with a plausible way for Cable to return to the X-Men. Because fans can be extremely vocal and hard to please, care and consideration has to be made in order to make the return worthy and not diminish the sacrifice he made a year ago. Thus the question remains, how exactly will Cable be reborn?

== TEASER ==

When Cable died bringing the X-Force team back from the future, we only saw his death from the present. We can't be exactly sure what it was like on the other end, in the future. It appears he became completely engulfed by the T-O virus but what exactly does that mean? With the explosion that occurred, perhaps something was able to knock the virus into remission. Sure the explosion looks pretty gnarly but what if it was just a T-O virus shell on top of him that actually blew off of him?

For all we know, Cable could have actually survived his death. Because it was supposed to be a one-way trip, he could have been spending all these months in the future trying to figure out a way to return to the present. Being in the future gives him access to future technology (naturally). Since he as spent so much time time-traveling, he knows how time-traveling devices should work. When he is finally able to cobble together everything he needs to make a functioning time-travel device. He'll come back and everything will be back to normal. How many months or years it would take him is another issue.

But that'd be too easy.

Cable has spent a lifetime in the future. His entire life history hasn't been chronicled or revealed. With all the time travel he's done, who's to say that he didn't journey to the (current) present the few years before New Mutants #87, where he was the leader of the mercenary team, Six Pack?

Is this the Cable we'll see?

What if he traveled back when he was younger, like in his twenties? With time travel and knowledge of future events, he would know that revealing too much to others about their histories could be hazardous. The Cable we know could have been aware of all the events that will occur after his REBORN series returns him to the present. It's also possible that at the end of this journey in his younger days, something happens that caused some minor amnesia. Maybe he even had a telepath make some adjustments to his memories when he returns to the future in order to live the rest of his life without putting risk to the timeline.

With his return falling under the REBORN title, that's another angle that should be considered. Captain America: Reborn didn't deal with Steve Rogers actually being physically reborn. It was simply a metaphor for bringing him back from what appeared to be his death, when he was actually trapped bouncing around time. With Cable, we could have the same thing. The use of reborn could simply mean a way to return him to today's comics or it could mean he's actually being reborn.

We need to keep in mind who his true mother was, Madelyne Pryor. She was a clone of Jean Grey but what if some elements of the Phoenix Force resides in his DNA. Could it be possible that Cable will be reborn but won't be the same Cable we know? He could physically resemble the character but if he doesn't retain our Cable's memories, it would bring a whole new twist to the idea of a character returning from the dead.

But this wouldn't exactly explain why the teaser image shows him with the same metal arm. Although it does appear that his arm was in one piece when he exploded. For all we know, there could be some other person that knows of the history of the man called Cable. What if he happened to be one-armed himself or somehow was able to modify Cable's arm to take over his mission after being inspired by his tales?

We'll have to wait a few months before we get more detail. For now, we can just hope that Cable being reborn doesn't mean we'll see Baby Cable again...

Boo! I thought it would be the other metalic arm guy wth the 5 letter name would be reborn. Boo!

I'm hoping for the cable who sacrificed himself, his death seamed ambiguous and it's possible he has simply been trapped in the future recovering from losing his arm and the TO virus

But who knows they can just grab a cable from a different future or point in his life and bring him into the main 616
But if it isn't for an important reason it will really annoy me if they cheapen his death just so he can be back in the comics so soon after his sacrifice

It's gonna be like Messiah CompleX, except it's a baby boy that Hope steals from the Purifires. She names the baby Faith and time jumps from all sorts of eras. As Faith begins to mature, more of his arm becomes metallic.

I dont get how they can bring him back and keep the TO virus  in just the arm. Last time cable was shown his whole body was infected so unless he is in a cloned body or hes found some future tech that could reverse its affects it makes little sence to me. If he could reverse the affects why have any TO at all?  I like that hes coming back but iam not sure how this will work out.

Maybe it's not the Cable we know. What if it's X-Man somehow turns into Cable.

#9 Posted by TheCheeseStabber (8079 posts) - - Show Bio

i think theyll tae tht arm he left behind an replace buckys arm with it then Bucky will have the virus cabal will try to take control an by end of Fear Itself Cabals gonn destroy all the hammers with his mind ;D
#10 Posted by GBrutality (192 posts) - - Show Bio

i like some of the ideas that people are throwing around that maybe x-man will become cable (really what else does the guy do?)

but i gotta be honest, cable never stuck out to me as this character that was so necessary to everything. cable to me is a character that if he dies it was more of a "..hmph. well, that sucked. let's go get {insert name} for doing this!" not someone that needs to be brought back immediately. the guy was a soldier who had a really crappy life not knowing his parents and being in a reality that was a complete and utter shithole, not to mention he was infected as an infant with a goddamn virus. let the guy just be dead for a while, no one is really crying out for the loss of cable.

maybe they will bring him back in a way that's absolutely impressive. but captain america reborn was because it was THE captain america coming back. cable reborn just sounds like when they first came out with directv or something.

How can Cable be dead when is not even born ? remember he's a character from the future, there's lots of possible timelines and any of those could be used

#12 Posted by draven_uk (1 posts) - - Show Bio

I have a theory based on the promo pic and some recent news

in the promo pic Cable's eye glows RED yet in evey other pic it glows YELLOW pair that with the recent news from SDCC that Cyclops will not be in the new Xmen comics after schism...

could there be injuries to Scott that would require the use of Cable's arm and leave him with one eye? (esp if theres a showdown with Wolverine!!)

If that was executed well, it could be one of the best ''resurrection'' ideas yet

Maybe Cable comes back through his T-O arm after all well know for a fact that T-O being like warlock are capable of regenerating thanks to the virus itself.  Maybe that how he comes back warlock might infused  some of himself in the arm to help it regenerate. After all nothing has been said that he will return human.

#16 Posted by cyberninja (10413 posts) - - Show Bio

Cable will return by giving birth to himself like Spider-Man did.

Couldn't agree with you more!, but if this is the case, then it wouldn't be the first time that Marvel's done that.

I think that the virus angle has a lot of potential and is a good one to explore.  Perhaps when he gave himself to the virus, it copied his entire personality and it is a file lodged in his arm.  Or maybe the arm will regrow Cable as a T-O being, kind of like a starfish.  On the one hand, it would be kind of disgusting, but at the same time it would at least be interesting.

Welp, he is a time traveler, so maybe he's a time lord and he'll just regenerate.

#23 Posted by Aspenite (892 posts) - - Show Bio

Well written article.
It was a memorable death. Quite emotional concerning the use of Hope on the same page. Now that he will be back at least she will be happy.

#24 Posted by fodigg (6146 posts) - - Show Bio

I'd like a younger Cable to show up. It's the easiest way to bring back a time traveler.

#25 Posted by Joe Venom (1275 posts) - - Show Bio

Hope will suddenly become pregnant after protecting a new light from being abducted by Sinister, later she will give birth to a child bearing a techno organic arm, and upon some testing it is determined that there child is in fact CABLE reborn!

Since there was no father it can only mean that this is Hope's "Second Mutation", so the X-Club decide to run some test on Hope during which she repeatedly states that "she's fine" when suddenly she burps up a >BAMF< cloud. After an awkward sniff Dr. Nemesis says, "does anyone else smell sulfur?"....................To Be Continued!

#26 Posted by HellionVulcan (3739 posts) - - Show Bio

Just for lawls it would've been cool if hope & cable were raised up together after he was like a father to her then after his death hes back a child .... but with Loeb apart of it i know it'll be meh Cable's death was amazing bringing him back is way to soon .

#27 Posted by ZacCooper (106 posts) - - Show Bio
@draven_uk: I quite like this idea but how big would his metal arm be compared to his normal arm, I doubt he could even lift it haha.

I was thinking about Stryfe, like I remember Apocalypse took him away to be his next 'vessel for his soul', but we saw that his new body was that of a young boy, so could it have something to do with Apocalypse and Stryfe?

I was thinking the same thing about X-Man, but the whole angle of Cyclops being Cable too is interesting as well.

You do realize that Cable may be from the future, but he is the child of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor during the main stream run of comic books. He was infected by Apocalypse and then taken into the future by the Askani.

Why is everyone scoffing at Cable being reborn as coming back too early- hell Bucky just died and people jumping up and down for him to come back- and they're saying its too early for Cable.

#32 Posted by Red Rum (357 posts) - - Show Bio

I'd like to think his consciousness will be implanted in his metal arm, and it'll just be a metal arm dragging itself everywhere with limited perception...

#33 Posted by The Impersonator (5403 posts) - - Show Bio

Cable is a time traveller. Even though he may be dead, Cable can come back from any different points in time. It sounds complicated though. If he wasn't sent further into the future being saved by the Askani and came to the past, would Cable be still alive?

#34 Posted by bigsoto74 (216 posts) - - Show Bio

We seen that Apocalypse is being cloned and is an infant. I wonder if they used Cable's DNA with Apocalypse. It would be kinda ironic.
#35 Posted by frozenedge (1212 posts) - - Show Bio

it'll probably either through the T-O virus that took over his whole body or it'll actually be an alternate reality version of Cable that went through the same life as he did. In other words, somebody'll just resurrect him to screw with the X-Men's head.

#36 Posted by waruikumo (357 posts) - - Show Bio

Does anyone know what story arcs chronicle cable duking it out with Apocalypse?

Also I'm glad to head Cable coming back, I am worried to hear Loeb writing him.  Swyercinzki's (sp) stuff was awesome, and that cable one shot by Kirkman a couple of years back was AWESOME!

#37 Edited by Jackson_Hartley (186 posts) - - Show Bio

As long as the Cable being reborn isn't the same Cable who died, but a past or alternate version of himself, then I'll be happy with that. However, if it's somehow the same Cable who died sacrificing himself, then I'll just be as annoyed with Marvel as I usually am when they make a death pointless.

Cable never hit the meteoric rise to Marvel fame like some of the other X-Men, but Messiah Complex made people look back at his role in the Marvel Universe and feel like everything came full circle. Bringing back Cable in anyway is gonna make his death seem pointless, but if they bring back the Cable who should be dead, then it makes it even more pointless and makes more fans feel as many others mostly do now; "Why do they even bother killing them?", "He'll be back in a year", "How many times has she/he died?"

Sometimes the dead need to stay dead (at least longer than a year).

#38 Posted by thiagosantos (8 posts) - - Show Bio

I guess we always forget that Nate Grey (X-Man) is Cable's counterpart from Age of Apocalypse. And he has recently reapeared in New Mutants #26. Since it looks like he's about to be part of the team, it would put him exactely on the same team Cable integrated originally.
Don't you guys think there's the possibility that Nate Grey is taking Cable's place in the X-men Universe?!?

time travel.

Why the hell do they keep letting Loeb ruin my favorite characters!? First Hulk, now Cable? I swear to God if they don't retcon Loeb's lobotomization of the Marvel canon I'm going to firebomb their offices. Two words that should never go together: Hulk Family.

I'm really excited about this, but I really hope it doesn't belittle his sacrifice during Second Coming. I wonder how Hope will feel, if it's not actually the Cable we all know and it's someone entirely else.

#45 Posted by PhoenixoftheTides (3531 posts) - - Show Bio

This is another one of those characters that really should stay dead for the greater purposes of the storyline. And with Rachel and Nate still around, I think the amount of Summers' children running around downplays each of their importance. I never liked Cable, though.

#46 Posted by Demonturtle (455 posts) - - Show Bio

I hope its Nate or Stryfe coming back as cable.  That way it doesnt seem liked he killed himself for nothing!

#49 Posted by 00 Raiser (442 posts) - - Show Bio

I was a little sad to see Cable go but cause the man had a hard life. I wish they would let his character rest in peace. Now hearing about him being reborn makes me a little annoyed. I mean really? Next thing you will know Nightcrawler will bet back.

#50 Posted by GreenFuse (295 posts) - - Show Bio

I'd like him to be reborn in Ultimate MvC3 :)

A younger Cable would be nice though. Just twerk the time travel thing. It's generally too convoluted for me to understand anyways. I just blink and nod.
