Fighting For The Future
I've been out of the Marvel loop for quite some time, so I decided to catch up via the trade route. My first review was for Secret Avengers: Reverie. My 2nd one will be the first volume of Cable & X-Force: Wanted.
The Story:
This story picks up right after the events of AvX. I didn't read that series but I do know the gist of everything that happened. Cable has begun receiving visions of future disasters and has decided to put together a new X-Force team to take on these threats. Consisting of himself, Domino, Colossus, Dr. Nemesis and Forge they embrace the mutant outlaw title and do the dirty work that needs to be done. The team is also assisted by Hope Summers (against the wishes of Cable) and constantly pursued by the newly formed Uncanny Avengers.
The Good:
This volume is a good mix of action and humor. What I like best about the humor is that it isn't forced and actually has very good comedic timing. The action scenes are well done and there's also an air of mystery regarding exactly who the team's primary opposition is. Hopeless does a good job with the team's covert tone and does a particularly good job of balancing the team members and keeping everyone in the spotlight. The interractions between Forge and Dr. Nemesis are my favorite in this first arc.
The art is by Salvador Larrocca who had an extended run on Invincible Iron Man. It's better in some spots than others but overall he does a solid job. Some of his characters seem to be a bit too muscular for the characters they represent but that is a minor complaint.
The Bad:
There's not much to complain about here. The first arc was only 5 issues and did feel a bit brief. I feel like most trade paperback collections should have at least 6 issues but that's a minor complaint.
The Score:
4/5
If you're a fan of Cable then you should definitely check this out. Hopeless does a good job here and I will definitely pick up the second volume when it becomes available.
