When we were first introduced to the Buffy character, she was an only child and she remained that way for quite a while. However, Dawn, Buffy’s sister was suddenly introduced into the Buffyverse. She was not born a baby girl; in fact she's supposed to be just a few years younger than Buffy. Later it was revealed that Dawn is not in fact a normal human being, but a physical shape given to a mystical device called “the key”. This key is supposed to be a catalyzer that enables the bridge between dimensions. A group of wise monks created the human form of Dawn to hide the Key from the reach of Glory (an evil goddess) who was trying to create an entryway to her home dimension. If she succeeded in creating this portal then the structures that separate earth from hellish universes would be torn down resulting in the destruction of reality as we know it. Of course, Buffy stops this from happening, but sacrifices herself in the process.

Rupert Giles is a Watcher that the Council assigned to work with Buffy after the death of Merrick. He first met Buffy at the school's library where he was working as a librarian. He recognized her as the Slayer and presented her with a book on vampires that she quickly rejected then fleeing the scene. As Buffy wanted to leave her life as a Slayer behind her, she was reluctant to taking Giles as her Watcher, especially with the death of Merrick still fresh in her memory. Nevertheless the Watcher was constant and kept insisting until Buffy finally decided to accept her destiny as the Slayer.
Graham Miller was an agent of The Initiative and one of Riley Finn's closest friends.
Hank Summers was the father of the slayer Buffy Summers and her sister Dawn. He was married to Joyce Summers but they divorced a short time before the Summers women moved to Sunnydale.
Fred Burkle was saved from another dimension by Angel Investigations. She joined up and worked with them for years, until her soul was destroyed and her body taken over by the Demon Old One, Illyria.
