While the person behind it has changed, Box is always portrayed as a powerful robot. Edit
Box was Roger Bochs; he is now deceased. Several others has also been known as Box. The second was Jerome K. Jaxon. Sasquatch has also used the Box armor. Another person - Madison Jeffries was also Box briefly.
Roger Bochs
A brilliant mechanical engineer from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Roger dealt with depression about his disability (it is never revealed how he lost his legs). This depression was a recurring problem throughout his life...
He, with Guardian's advice, created a robot which could be controlled remotely through a helmet. However, after the Gamma and Beta Flight programs were cancelled by the Canadian Government (no doubt the same geniuses who cancelled the legendary Avro Arrow program), Roger returned to Saskatchewan.
There he was contacted by Jerome Jaxon, who was reforming Gamma Flight. Jaxon's intentions were less than noble, as his plan was to use the new team to destroy James Hudson, the Guardian. Bochs figured this out, but joined with the intention of spying and warning Hudson. When Jaxon found out, he himself took control of the Box robot and fought Hudson, resulting in both their deaths (or so it seemed... Hudson had not really died...)
Roger felt guilty about Hudson's death, and with the help of mutant Madison Jeffries, who could reshape inorganic materials, constructed a new Box suit, which he could physically enter by phasing into it.
At this time Sasquatch was killed by Snowbird, and Walter Langkowski's soul needed a new body. Roger gave up his Box armor for a time so that Walter would have a body, but Walter's soul soon went elsewhere, and Roger once again fought as Box.
Roger's mental instability would again resurface as he developed a romance with Aurora. Feeling inadequate because of his disability and his obesity, he sought help from Madison Jeffries' brother, Lionel, who could reshape flesh and bone. Unbeknownst to him, Lionel used parts from a corpse, and after a time Roger's new legs began to rot. Aurora then rekindled her romance with Walter (who was in a new body himself). This drove Roger over the edge, and Lionel then merged together with him to form the hideous Omega. Madison Jeffries was forced to destroy Omega, killing both his own brother and good friend at once.
Madison Jeffries
Madison took over the Box armor, significantly altering it and its abilities. See Madison Jeffries for more. He eventually gave up the Box identity, thereby ending the armor's illustrious and infamous career.
Powers
Originally, the Box robot was made of steel and could lift 40 tons. It was controlled by a helmet which transmitted thoughts to the robot and allowed its wearer to percieve the robot' senses. It could also fly.
The newer version was made of a "living metal". It was much stronger, able to lift 85 tons (or potentially more). Under Madison Jeffries control, it was nearly indestructable, due to his ability to reform metal. It could fly Mach 2+, and had a wide array of sensors and other parts, enabling it to fire beams of energy and electricity. Jeffries (as Bochs did before him) phased into the armor rather than using a remote-control helmet.
