Review: Booster Gold #39

Booster Gold's avoidant behavior finally reaches a breaking point as he's forced to face the certainty of Ted Kord's death.

The Good

Giffen and DeMatteis impressively find an emotional core to even the most convoluted of circumstances in this issue. As ludicrous as time travel gets in comics, there's an undeniable tragedy in the fact that BG can have all these impossible adventures and see his bigger-named colleagues get resurrected, but he simply can't have his friend back.

The Bad

BG's run-in with the would-be vigilante thief seemed way too convenient, even for the needs of this story. Skeets seemed a lot snarkier than I've ever seen him portrayed, too. Also, to anybody who's actually been to Highland Park, it's quite amusing to see how little resemblance the skyscraper-filled cityscape here has with the actual quiet suburban town.

The Verdict - 3.5/5

In a lot of ways, I see this as a complementary title to Power Girl. While both characters were introduced during the days of the JLI, of course, there's a stronger parallel in the fact  that they're both good-hearted heroes who aren't always the sharpest tools in the shed. BG might not being going through as Baroque a breed of angst here, but his struggle with grief still has truly-moving pathos.

This issue had a very different feel. Alot less wordy too. I'm hoping now Michael has made some peace with Ted's death the story can move forward now. I really miss Dan Jurgens on this book.

@longbowhunter: Have you been reading Time Masters: Vanishing Point? It's basically the same Jurgens team writing the same thing, but with a bit more of a focus on Rip Hunter.
